The best thing about New Zealand is that it's far away from rest of the world. The worst thing is that... well... it's far away from the rest of the world. It's a great place to be if you love the idea of finding a beach to yourself, or for riding out a pandemic, but as you say terrible if you like the bustle of a big city, travel, or cheap prices from massive bulk-buy stores.

Median salaries and house prices would be a fairer indication, for example our average salary may be low compared to somewhere like the USA however the average there is dragged up by a relatively small number earning insanely high pay when there is a huge amount of the population earning considerably lower than the NZ minimum wage, also those houses you showed that cost over a million were not typical of what you could expect for that price, but hey we don't want too many people coming here so good vid lol.

    • @newzealandstories5621
      @newzealandstories5621  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks Chris. Yeah, there's a lot more detail regarding median salaries and house prices that I could go into for another video, but having seen what you can buy in the US for the same price or less, our houses in NZ are poor value.

@@newzealandstories5621 Yes it definitely is a problem, I feel we need more social housing, the gap due to the sell off of our state housing stock as well as not replacing with new homes has been the major cause of this issue, overseas investors have added to this problem but statistics show it is only a small factor, the real problem is population growth and new housing not keeping up. Similar issues with infrastructure also have the same cause.

@@chrisharris1522 I agree. The other big elephant in the room is housing as an asset class. A capital gains tax probably wouldn't fix the entire problem but it would be a step in the right direction towards not making housing a giant investment vehicle in which the rich can leverage their current properties to keep buying more and reaping the capital gains. No political party for years and years has had the guts to seriously tackle the problem which is why we're in this mess now.

Remember one always takes ones self no matter where one chooses to live.
I have UK /AUS citizenship can therefore live in NZ . Retired now in Lake district UK where i was born after 23 years in AUS/NZ
Ive travelled at various times from the top of the North island to bottom of the south. Many contrasts along the way .Depends what one is looking for
AUS has to attract tourists with glossy brochures ,NZ is better /nicer than the brochures portray but one cant live on views alone . lovely place though.
Many many Kiwis choose to live in AUS " Trans Tasman agreement " for a better income /lifestyle .
Yes as with my time in TAS ...NZ is far from any where.
So simply i would suspect many Kiwis prefer to live in AUS/QLD due to the availability of work and the higher achievable wages in AUS .

Yes, agree with you totally. I lived, worked in NZ for 40 years, I could never afford to go on holidays, I lived from paycheck to paycheck in the construction industry, I got the opportunity to move to Australia 13 years ago and stayed there for 10 years, I had a great life in Australia was paid 50% more , could afford to have a great life and really enjoyed myself, back in NZ now for 3 years and though I would say it's a great place to visit, it is pretty hard to get ahead, afford to buy a house, have a good life, on the income you can earn here and, as you say, you can't live on scenery alone....

One of the things I identified early after arriving in NZ was that the laid back attitude often relates to doing things because that is how it has always been done, and ideas to generate greater efficiencies are not well received. You will get on with people if you take on board the Kiwi attitude and are willing to muck in, don't be stand offish.
Try to have work lined up before arriving in NZ, and if possible try to find something down south, this is likely to make housing more affordable (although not cheap).
Second hand cars are also expensive in NZ, so if you have a vehicle of a reasonable quality it may be worth shipping it over, I know I regretted not doing so.
I would disagree with the video in that Kiwis don't like following rules, certainly not those around driving and parking or those around health and safety, be warned.

I live in South Africa and I recently visited my sister in New Zealand, it is absolutely mind blowing how safe and non corrupted the country is. I stayed with my sister for a month and a bit and I definitely want to move there. In South Africa, Cape Town you can’t dare walk anywhere alone especially as a female, you have a high chance of being robbed or kidnapped, it doesn’t matter where you live it will happen. There are homeless everywhere, shacks, and crazy racism. It was shocking to see only 1 homeless person in New Zealand as well as the fact that the government isn’t corrupted. If Julius Malema’s party gets nominated in South Africa we are all doomed, like he said “kill the boer(white people)” and “kill the gham(brown people)”

DON"T MOVE TO NZ. The realestate market in general is now 12 times earnings, this is for most incredibiliy expensive and kiwis, including immigrants that have only been in NZ for a few years are also now starting to leave. When the border opens many including economists believe 10s of 1000s of kiwis are going to leave, many to Australia. Unless you are fairly wealthy don't even try. NZ does have a gun culture, if you google gun crime in NZ for 2021 you will be shocked with how many shootings each week have been happening, don't put too much faith into these global livability indexes as many of them have or are backed by vested interests. You can't just buy or rent a home in any town in NZ as many NZ towns now have high gang memberships, especially from Black Power and Mongrel Mob, it's estimated by police NZ now has over 200,000 gang members. Police want to be armed, they often fair for their safety. Many immigrants and locals now longer think NZ is that safe. NZ government report found nearly 60 per cent of the country’s rivers carry pollution above acceptable levels, with 95 to 99 per cent of rivers in pastoral, urban and non-native forested areas contaminated. We speak English, YES, but Maori are trying to force mandatory teaching of the Maori language in NZ schools and more government agencies are using Maori language which for immigrants maybe difficult. If you are a white male I would say don't come, call any recruitment agency before you do and ask them, are their nwo quotes for non-whites, LGBQ, woman etc and you will find all say yes, which means on merit you will lose opportunities (most likely why more are leaving for oz) This is the tip of the ice berg, our infrastructure is poor, living costs/food are incredibility high, there is a lot more social/racial tension growing in NZ, more freedoms and rights have been stripped.

@@christopherharvey4849 Absolute bullshit, I am living in Asia, it's far better, no supply problems where I am, no housing affordability problems, no food affordability problems, petrol is $3 a litre and expected to most likely go to $4 at years end, and NZ has a real gang and crime problem now, while in Asia crime is lower, there is more to do, dating is far better, so many advantages and I don't have to put up with all the left wing diversity/feminist rubbish. 2020/21 NZ stats shows above the age of 27 there are now approx. 40,000 less men than woman. Many have left for better lives, ANZ bank analysis expects a mass brain drain exodus to Australia when borders open for better wages and living conditions. I mean OMG, in todays paper in NZ a woman brought food online from Australia and it was cheaper. And I have travelled to a number of countries and me and all my friends who left NZ all agree it's better over seas. Now, NZ will suffer inflation or worse stagflation, they are talking more about a hand landing with the real estate market, that is just a polite way of saying property crash, and many local kiwi's are planning to go overseas for their holidays because they have been locked down in NZ for 2 years, this will impact the tourist industry in NZ which is already failing. Ah, my god, is there anything good about the country, NOPE.

I can't understand why migrants want to leave their home country and separate their families and alot of them will say they want to contribute their skills to a foreign country. Why don't they remain loyal and stay in their home country and develop and improve the economy of their home country instead of a foreign country. In my observations in years to come when the migrants can't get their family to join them in the host country the migrants will blame the government for separating their family. However it is the migrants themselves who separate their own family.

The majority of immigrants from middle-class families from developing nations, and they sell their fixed assets such as land and even home to pay the tuition fees to developed nations institutes for traveling. After graduation, the average salary in Pakistan is 25000 PKR = $180 per month. So what is the average salary in America, Australia, Uk, New Zealand, and all other developed countries in a month? The only reason is highly paid and that's why at least one family member paid the sacrifice for their whole family to make happy.
