- This spectacular tiny house situated on a multi generational family farm is absolutely breathtaking. Ruby grew up on this farm. The family has a deep connection to this land, and it's where Ruby wanted to deepen her roots by building her own home.
Not wanting to get into a huge amount of debt, she wanted to keep her home small and simple and a tiny house was the ideal solution. She has added onto the main tiny house structure by creating seperate structures for both a shower / laundry room, as well as a toilet.
Ruby is a gardener by profession and the area all around her home has been exquisitely planted to create majestic, productive gardens.. Plants even climb the exterior walls of the tiny house which helps to make the home feel even more enchanting.

So long as the queen does not feel threatened, she is fine. The rest are worker bees doing their jobs. Read up on bees, they are fascinating insects.

My husband and I have two hives and we never have to gear up to take care of them. I think that the bees know instinctively that we are peaceful and just there to help them. Leo Sharafskin (Sp. ?) was a huge help in learning what kind of hives to build and how to lovingly keep bees. Take care!!

Loved it! So many great ideas! This New Zealand young lady is beautiful and so talented, such an adorable place, I am so jealous! Everything looked so fresh and real, the vegetables looked delicious and I loved the outdoor bathroom, albeit, I would be scared that coyotes would be around at night, it looked pretty remote there. My parents both died and they had 10 acres of land with the house that I lived in from the 7th grade through 12th grade, so special. Unfortunately, 2 huge trees fell on the house and destroyed it and I now live 9 hours away, driving time, from the property. This video has sparked some ideas within me to put some connecting small houses (guest bedrooms) with the raised gardens and an outdoor bathtub, my parent's property sits on a hill with great views too. It would be a great getaway. My husband and I currently have lake houses in Illinois, similar to this concept, that are down a lane and we bought the 2 small cottages at the very end and built a 3rd cottage (guests cottages) in between and have them all connected with wooden sidewalks, lots of flowers and trees, the water views are great and the houses sit near the water, no climbing down steps to the lake, it is an adorable place and so fun in the summer! No outdoor bathtub though! I had a pergola built between two of the houses with wisteria vines growing on it, which I call the grotto, where we have Adirondack chairs and a fire pit for cool nights in the spring and fall; we sit and drink wine overlooking the lake, laugh and talk, watch the boats on the lake, it is fun. This New Zealand home is such a cute place, a great show!

Incredible place! The waterfall & privacy is super along with surfing that I imagine is not too far away. I bet the stars there at night are beautiful.
I love how respectful Bryce always in when he visits peoples' homes. He always asks before entering the house or another room even though he's obviously there to tour the house!

It really is a shame that in America there were certain people and groups that literally planned the destruction of the family. In many parts of the world this has not been lost. The families help each other succeed and stay together and support each other. Research this subject.

Exactly, she just had to invest on the building of the house, but as far as the field is concerned, she did not buy the land, just inherited it. Some privileges that not all could have.
It gets so old seeing these types of comments. Somebody had to work for this land, and each generation that followed had to be wise to not lose it. She is making it beautiful and taking care of it. I have no inheritance, and grew up incredibly poor. I was determined to have land, so I sacrificed and now have plenty. You can do the same and still be happy for those whose parents and grandparents thought about the future generations. So petty.
This is the one for me. Not only is the house beautiful but the whole package that she has built around it is perfect. I love that she says she feels like she’s on holiday when she comes home. That’s exactly the feeling I want have when I build my home.

@@rondela7341 she’s clearly not freeloading - she’s worked extremely hard to build and maintain her house, gardens and other amenities and has a job. Even if she didn’t have that job, she’s still contributing to the property which is often considered adequate in these types of living arrangements. It’s actually quite smart to share land with family and/or friends - you can share rent, property maintenance/costs and you feel a closer connection to your loved ones while maintaining your own autonomy... cohousing is so underrated, probably because the economy doesn’t want people to band together to be less reliant on its rigged, rich-pandering system

Just finished filming today on those very sand dunes. I've been following this channel's content since around 2018. I haven't kept up recently, and Ruby herself has brought me back, with this very episode. I met her today - she was shuttling our production's crew.
It wasn't until the last drive back to base when I piped up about the small houses near where our base camp was, how cool they were, and how it's a bit of a dream of mine to build and live in my own. Ruby said she had her own, near the dunes. She asked if I watched tiny house shows on TH-cam, and I said "Yes! The one with the kiwi guy - BRYCE."
She then told me about this episode. I told her I would go watch it as soon as I could.
Wow. What an incredible sense of place.

Bryce’s enthusiasm as he closed this video was so touching. This home is particularly special. I love the home and the gardens. The bathroom areas are adorable and her life seems to be going just where she wants it to! What a blessing and a treasure!

Bryce is enthusiastic about everything. He has never offered a challenging criticism/critical eye, or asked a difficult question. You could show him a cardboard box in a sewer, with a bed made of used condoms, and he'd say "oh this is loveleeeey!".

I love how grounded this young woman is. When she was talking about building her home out of that reclaimed wood at 18 -- wow! She always had a plan, and grew up right.
Would be great to see more of the Māori in some of these tours, especially if they have managed to keep their ancestral lands.

This is the best tiny house I have ever seen! Not just because of the interior, but the way you became self-sufficient and growing all the essentials on your land. You don't have to be slave to your work just to be able to pay mortgages all your life. You really are living the dream!

This is an absolutely stunningly beautiful place. Ruby and her friends and family have created a dream space. While listening to Ruby's story and her families story I can't help but think of the colonizers that stole this land. I often watch these videos and think the same. It's so lovely that Ruby wants to live a sustainable life, I commend her for that but this dream of living on this much land is not attainable for most people of color because our families don't own this much land. I'm not trying to be mean, Ruby is a lovely woman.
As someone who is actively trying to manifest a tiny home and land to put it on, it's hard to not notice the glaring inequality that many of these tiny home videos show.
First thing I thought. Its beautiful but I couldn't help but think, I'm sure the people who lived there before also had a connection to the land.
Same exact thought. Very beautiful land but it truly belonged to someone else. The people who originally owned the land should be reaping the benefits and passing it down to their family. It's funny how inequality works isn't it, Some are required to share and others aren't.

Yes, it must be nice to be born in a family with so much. What is amazing is that this woman could have been spoiled and expecting all handed to her. I was quite surprised that she also has baking skills. I do wonder why the relationship with the man that helped her build her dream is not here with her.

If the soil is so hydrophobic, it must rain there all the time, because the vegetation is so lush in the whole area.
@@HareDeLune It does rain a lot,and most of the soil we have,is Volcanic,rich in minerals and enzymes.plants and vegetables grow really well in NZ,but so do weeds. :-)

Canada has even more undeveloped land than New Zealand. Labrador, the mainland section of our province of Newfoundland and Labrador, has about the same land area as New Zealand, but only 30,000 people to NZ's 4.9 million!

@@sunb5738, I think it has its place, such as how much easier it is to build a foundation below the frostline with poured concrete than stacking randomly shaped rocks.
However, it's overused and contributes to sinkholes when there isn't enough permeable ground to recharge the underground waterways.
I hope you're able to move one day from your concrete jungle into a real jungle!

I think there's something to be said about generational living, multiple generations of family living on the same property over time as well as together. The further we get through this pandemic the more value I see in it. We're taught to go off and build our own thing alone, on our own, but there's so much value in working together with generations of family to create something sustainable for family communal living. I feel like generations past understood this as well as other cultures. Its quite lonely living on your own when you're unable to see others and living in this way on the same property, with other family members can combat that. As well as being able to take care of older generations in their own home instead of having to send them to a facility to be taken care of because they can't live alone. A lot to think about here.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately!! My 82-year-old, Jamaican grandfather had a FIT when I moved out (he even cried 😞). Now that my apartment has flooded and I’m living back at home, I realize how lonely I felt and I was spending a LOT of money... for whyyyy? It actually makes less and less sense the more I think about it

Excellent viewpoint....my mom and stepfather had this vision when they moved from the U.S. to Nova Scotia. Wanted us all ...the next generation... to come live there with them on the land they owned. But there was little work to be had and we'd have to become citizens too...too many legal hurdles to overcome.
It's a beautiful idea, and wonderful for those who can realise it. Lockdown has definately made me miss my family more acutely. We have pretty humble roots and did not own land until recently, and as such my family is scattered across the globe in search of work and a place to call their own. My husband and I have aspirations to one have a large place with land to be able to host family and always be able to have our doors open to people.
I love when Ruby said, "When my friends come they think its quite crazy having an outside bathroom, I actually quite enjoy it cause when I come out here at night I can appreciate the stars and the moon and what that's all doing, but if you were living in town you wouldn't see that at all" ❤️️❤️️❤️️
I’d be afraid of wild animals.
With as many times I get up to go to the bathroom at night,.... that wouldn’t be practical for me....

Seen many of these tiny house videos, but this one is one of my favorites. What a great way to live, like our ancestors did. A slower more stress free life. Good job, young lady.
This one was hard to watch. For the past year, watching these videos have been really bittersweet for me, and this one made the reason for that suddenly click into place in a way I feel like I can put into words. It feels like even a tiny house is an unreachable fantasy financially. I know there are people who can make it work without the family land or the builder spouse, or the ability to sell a traditional house they had purchased or inherited before-- but it feels like it's just as unreachable as any other form of homeownership to me now. And it's probably just plague-depression talking, but it's hard not to feel sad about it. Love your videos, love this channel, I'm happy these people are followin' their dreams, helping the environment, and being financially free.
Its not unachievable. Look for farmland far from the madding crowd and build your shack. Dont let fear stop you. Just do it. I know cos i live in the boonies and built over 10 years on a shoe string
Baby steps. Work hard, save your money, buy cheap land, save your money, build a cheap place, save your money, make your cheap place your dream. It looks impossible to accomplish in a year or two... but if you start today, I truly believe you'll be well on your way to the life of your dreams in 5 years.
Its not hard, its way easier to buy the land and materials to build a tiny house on a rural area than to build a full size house or own an aparment in the city. It just takes a little more effort than most of the ppl in this comment section are willing to put in
not unreachable, but you need some discipline and much of hard work........... its about the persons......and I say say that out of experience, I myself am an architect, and I learned to build so that I can be builder free...... I always did double effort compared to my peers and it paid

Hey Bryce, any chance we could see more videos on houses built by people with lower incomes? The Tiny House dream feels like it’s becoming more and more out of reach when I can’t see people who are achieving this without a family property or well-established incomes. It feels like the culture is shifting from affordable housing to an easy lifestyle change for people who already have heaps of money :/
Edit: Hi Repliers! Wanted to point out that my comment was more meant for the channel generally, rather than for this video specifically. When I say I'd like to see more lower-budget builds I don't mean I don't want to see higher-budget builds anymore, just more of each proportionately represented. The last 15 tiny houses averaged a $114,400 build and only 5 of them were under $100,000. 60% of them are on properties that the homeowners already own or properties that are owned by family members (13% of them didn't mention or are nomadic). So while lower-budget and no property ownership builds are shown, they are shown significantly less frequently.
Obviously, everybody's definition of high-budget is different but for me, personally, more recent videos are dominated with builds that would be out of my financial reach.

This is the first tiny house I've seen with separate structures for bath and toilet. I think it is very suitable for the NZ climate and the location, as well as the living situation (no small children) and has many advantages. You can have a larger space to live in and the washer in a separate area with more room. With a move, you might not want to bring it. I think it also simplifies the construction and reduced costs of the trailer. A low cost housing site in CA has also adopted this model, where there are several tiny homes share a sanitary facility, just like a campsite.
The surrounding garden really makes this place very special.

This is my most favourite tiny home so far on this channel... no crawl small loft sleeping spaces and ladders to navigate getting there... bees, flowers, enough lawn to relax, great views, and best of all it has ben built sustainably by upcycling and recycling ... and Ruby is still aiming for totally self sufficient.. she has a great out look on life and loving hear by wanting to give back!
What a paradise!!! I lived in Hawaii and cleaned multi-million dollar homes and my favorite one was one of many rooms connected by a deck over koi ponds and it was magical! I bet the stars are amazing at night!!! : )

This is truly freedom living at its finest. Very fortunate that she had family land and a lot of help to build her little compound. The land is everything, especially in tiny living.

These ppl always have wealthy family to help them or let them have their land . Must be nice .
If they have a farm they are not necessarily wealthy. LocAl family farms in this area don't have the money to paint their houses never mind build new ones. Most farmers I know are poor. Financially. Obvious with land you are rich in other ways

Truly when Europeans say my family has been here for generations, I always think who was here before you? Maori people have been in New Zealand for a thousand plus. I believe you had an episode with Maori tiny homesteaders, can you have some more?
Thank you for bringing this up, I had a very similar thought process while watching this video. I felt uncomfortable when she mentioned that it was her family's land and could only think about how her family got the land and who they might have taken it from.
Not a Kiwi, nor a white guy. But claiming a land is very difficult as the question would remain how far are we going back in history to justify whose land does it belong to. Shall we give Anatolia back to the Greeks or to the Hittites? Or surrender Philippines, Indonesia and Polynesia to China being the ancestors of its current inhabitants?
Casing point, give it a chill. It's a topic that is very peculiar and cannot be simply answered as our history is short and violent as a species, you'll get cancer if you think too much about it.
Thank you! I was thinking the same. I struggle to hear the land talked about like that without any sort of acknowledgment of the atrocities that happened to those who inhabited it first. In any part of the world with a history of colonialism, we need to rethink how we talk about these things. 😔

I love that she has her garden and bee colony. She makes everything for scratch which is a plus. I personally would run the waterfall the a filter before drinking it. But maybe she’s use to it. 😊
The whole setup is just stunning, but what also impressed me was handling the bees without the hazmat gear. Respect. I'm convinced insects have far more sense and awareness than given credit. I've not tried handling bees directly, but always pick up bumblebees in my cupped hands to escort them out. Never been stung, not even when I had to hold onto one I found on a speed boat out at sea until we got back to shore on a bumpy ride!
Bumblebees can’t sting, but they can bite if they feel threatened.

I should have been a bit more precise, I've never been stung handling a bumblebee, but I have been stung whilst riding my small motorbike on a warm day when my neck collided with a bumblebee and it got trapped between my neck and collar. That was extreme provocation, as far as the poor creature was concerned. It was definietly a sting and not a bite.

I agree with you, it's a pitty that some people who are less fortunate don't have the same opportunities. The best solution I see is buying a land that would be shared by a group of people.

@@shinyminy94 the cabin was already existing on her property. She has just done some fix up work to make it livable. She had said it’s not in good structural shape and doesn’t plan on living there long term.

What can you say, this is Heaven on Earth! Nothing I have ever seen could come close to this home with it's views, waterfall, miles and miles of scenery, the ocean, the garden, the cute out buildings. I can't imagine being debt free at her age. I've seen many homes you have shown that I love but this has everything you could want. This is just IT!!!
