    Regard spare air as stand alone diving: I investigated every angle of this for two summers, 2009-2011. Dived countless pools, a lake, and it was with my older child in the pools as we had plenty of training weeks leading up to actually using it. Findings: without training you can certainly die very fast, the pressure gradient in the zone you will be using this (not super deep) is the risky gradient to be caught holding one's breath; total lung damage will occur with any mishaps. That being said, lots of kids are scuba trained for basic technique and this gear isn't particularly dangerous if basic breathing habits and reactions are tested, verified and in place, and you are licensed / padi etc. in a typical pool of 10 ft at the bottom, you get about 8-10 mins max if you breathe in control and aren't moving much. we would switch out bottles while underwater, one bottle for each leg lol. ~16 min runs. Back out to car, where two tanks awaited and refilled. over and over, total fun for two years then it got boring and I ebayed them. If someone not certified bought one of these and used it, I would give them a 99% chance of dying a horrible injured drowning death.

      what do you mean its a risky gradient to be holding your breath?

    • @brandon429
      @brandon429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chronicawareness9986 the shallow three feet deep to the surface is a very fast expansion depth for air contained in a breath hold. It would be very dangerous to have coincidentally taken an inhale of the pressurized air a few feet down and for whatever reason held breath upon ascent. If it’s trained out by habit it’s not much of a risk, and the average water goer might have better breathing habits anyway. The point is lung damage can absolutely occur at depths we’d think it couldn’t when using compressed air.

    This is a really great review and I think you hit all the safety points on the head.There is a knock off product of this called Scorkl. It is on Kickstarter now and they are advertising it as a toy for anybody to use. It also comes with a hand pump to pump up. I believe it is a interesting idea to have a very tiny scuba system to use for very shallow exploration but I think many people will get hurt since they are not certified.
    It is a very cool concept to go somewhere with a hand pump and a tiny tank and be able to scuba dive for a long time. No heavy cylinders or BCD's, no need to worry about dive tables or DCI since you go shallow. You should look it up :)
    (Your English is extremely good btw)

    I was looking into this not as a toy but to use for some shallow water scuba diving. What I mean is like exploring reefs in very shallow water where you would normally just use a normal diving mask just to get more time under the water. Now for that, would you recommend a product like this?

      If the ship is still on the surface you'd get like 50 breaths. The deeper you are the less breaths due to air compression. I suppose it could be useful in a capsized ship situation but it would be better to just jump off the ship with a life jacket.
      At 5ATM of pressure at depth you'd only get 10 breaths

    These are not new. They were in use at least 20+ years ago for military helicopter crew over water. Designed to give enough air to get out of helo after a water crash as the helo is top heavy and will roll inverted shortly after submerging. Your not supposed to egress from fuselage until after the inversion to ensure there are no rotorblades to cut you short. They mounted directly on the chest of the crewmans flight rig. If you need one of these for coming from a deep dive, your gonna need hyperbaric treatment because they will not allow time for safety stops. They have to be hydro'd like any other high pressure tank and can be refilled if you have the correct adapters.

      It is safe only for certified divers. You breath in compressed air. People without proper training may get killed easily by using a spare air at 10 meters depth, if they hold their breath and start to ascend. The air under pressure in their lungs wants to expand as the surrounding pressure decreased while ascending. It will severely damage your lungs.

    • @harrywsteele
      @harrywsteele 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well aren't you just a bundle of joy... if you were using this in the shallows for 3 minutes at a time and the whole dive is less than 15 feet, you will never have absorbed enough nitrogen to cause DCS, so a rapid ascent from 15 feet should not cause issues, so long as the whole dive has been less than 15 feet, on a DCS basis... now you can have a lung overexpansion injury in very shallow water if you hold your breath - so, don't hold your breath - if a rapid ascent is needed, remember to exhale the whole way...

  • @DiveAtlantic
    @DiveAtlantic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    This is not a great safety system. A 6cf pony bottle with O2 or Nitrox would be a much safer bailout. While 3 minutes of air is enough to reach the surface from quite deep (over 130 feet) that's not considering the increased density of the air at depth. What lasts 3 minutes at 30 feet will only last 2 at 60 feet, and so on. Also the fact that there is no way of securing the system while you are using it is troubling. If the piece got knocked out of your mouth, it's likely to float away before you have time to recover it where as a proper tank with regulator hose can be recovered. Also you won't be loosing $500 if it does fall out.

      I have it and its quite easy to take out, it also comes with an elastic lanyard so that doesn´t happen. Its also relatively neutral in terms of buoyancy it will sink, but not like a stone. Its meant as an independent backup, like if you were to blow a hose or a broken valve that would drain your tank in seconds. If you can afford it and do risky dives, its a good thing to have to get to your partner or assist someone.

      @@Jonhenrysneip I've been diving since 1977. Or are you talking to someone else? For recreational diving depths, there is nothing wrong with this if you just want an emergency back-up to get to the surface. And that is all he is talking about.

  • @dennishaines5717

    Great, with this you can run out of air twice on the same dive. No serious scuba diver would have one of these as backup. I personally carry a 30 cf pony tank and with it I'm sure I'll reach the surface safely from recreational limits. The spare air would only be good for those diving shallow reefs but if you are diving that shallow you could cesa safely anyway.

    • @alaind831
      @alaind831 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      30cf is 1/3 of your typical main 80-100cf tank - which you are are supposed to go up way before you reach 500psi anyway. for rec dives that is way overkill and a lot of bulk. All you need is emergency to go up, not do a second dive... the size is the convenience and the drawback.

      Red_Devil used scuba gear costs the same as one of these, a rebreather is crazy expensive and very dangerous with high levels of needed, A hookah like the other commenter said is also probably a good idea for you
