something that's great about the cloud peak 2 (which i own) is that it's free standing, so you can move it around after doing the initial pitch to get the perfect spot before pegging down.
Good review dude, concerning all pros and cons I think I would be keeping the Opalus. It looks a cracking tent, yes it has a big footprint but the space inside is incredible, loads of room for those long camps in the fantastic wet Welsh weather. Also looking at the shape it would probably be quite good in the wind when all loop poles are guyed out. 👍
I took the Opalus 2 on a self-sustained 5 night hike along Hadrian's Wall last year in mid September. The first 2 nights saw the tail end of Hurricane Lee - lots of rain and reasonably high winds. I love that it's really easy and fast to pitch, no issues with leaks, fly does pick up condensation but as long as you've pitched it correctly the inner is nowhere close to the fly. I didn't once feel the need to guy it out. Can get a bit breezy with the top half mesh inner but if you consider wind direction when orienting the pitch will help. Definitely not a true 4 season though. As you mention, can be cumbersome getting in to the vestibule (I'm 6ft) but the floor space makes for loads of storage space and makes choosing a replacement difficult :)
Some good comments on it, and great to hear it can take a battering from the wind. I find there's condensation in all tents depending on the conditions but as long as the inner isn't touching it there's no problem 😊👌
Personally, I'd be keeping the Opalus 2. I think it is far more Practical when it's raining (which lets be honest, you get a fair amount of) Cloudpeak 2 dripping rain in is a major flaw imo.
I’d keep the cloud peak 2. That flaw is easily ignored. Well at least for me. If its raining and we want to socialize with others we have our tarps already setup as a common place. So we just close our tents. If im alone well, why would i open it if its raining. I’d be mucg comfortable inside watching movie Edit: I don’t like the opalus’ low head height
Opalus 2. Better profile, more space and weather protection for sunny Wales, Quicker to pitch and while head height is a consideration you solved that issue by dropping the tent inner.
For me, it's the Opalus 2. To have a usable vestibule on rainy days is a must as far as I'm concerned. I would like to know how it does in high winds though - I know larger tunnel tents can be real problem with the walls "caving" and effectively becoming a sail.
Cp2 has independently standing outer tent with outer poles, which makes it easier to set up on an uneven surfaces and also under rain or in the dark: you quickly set up the outer tent first and install the inner tent in confort. It also has two independent entries, which is a plus too, and it makes it possible to vent the inside better in summer.
I just purchased the Opalus 3 for motocamping and am waiting for it to arrive, but think I will pick up a Cloud up 2 as well. The Cloud Up tents are free standing so they can be set up in areas with rocky terrain/sandy soil that cannot be staked out. In areas with softer soil I will go with the Opalus model for the extra space for all my gear.
Get that cloud peak on there boy that opalus looks a nice tent great for longer camps an wet camps love all the room for storing stuff drying clothes such a nice tent 👊
I have the Opalus 3, in which I have just spent a fortnight, its size, porch and relative lightweight is what made me buy it and those are all positive. However, the flysheet does collect masses of condensation and whilst this doesn't come through to the inner tent and problem arises when you are packing up, when despite giving as much ventilation as possible and leaving it a couple of hours with both doors open the tent is still very wet on a warm sunny morning.
Thanks for the info mate. I've stopped worrying about condensation really but I can imagine it's harder to air out with the shape of it. My tents all just get shaked off and hung up to dry as soon as I get home
Ok, now I have finished and not a bad review. But in my opinion, you forgot to talk about the most important thing, the sleep area. Thanks Bart, I've been asking around about the option of rolling up one end for better ventilation. I'm in the tropics and the majority of tent reviews are for cold conditions. So, not sure which fabrics and tents are best for tropical rainy to dry/ humid heat. When it rains here, you'd want to be in a hammock tent or have your ground tent on a raft!
probably a silly question. But I've seen someone turn an opulas2 / opulas3 into a hot tent by putting a stove jack in the vestibule, And using a small stove. what are your thoughts on this ? it was lone wolf. Id be interested in your opinion.
Personally I don't think I would do it as the material is pretty thin and prone to spark holes. I've found that the thicker 210D oxford or canvas is way better and longer lasting for a hot tent
oh this is interesting. Just watched another review, but for the Opalus 3, which was not double walled, yet in this video the O2 looks to be double walled? Also you gave an impression of sitting inside the tent (head room) , but what about sitting in the porch? In the beginning you elude to the solidness of the CP2, but you didn't explain why you felt it was more solid than the O2?
Hi. Great vid. How tall are you? I’m a short arse,so I might have more head room. I like the opulus especially without the inner and just a ground sheet. Loads of room! All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧
Hi Adam, I know I'm behind on this one but I wanted to ask if you tested the opulus 3? I've been eyeing up on camperlist currently at £188 , would you consider the to be worth it ? It's light to carry and gives far more headroom, and compared to my berghaus grampian 2 it's like 2kg lighter. My only concern is can it handle welsh wind? My berghaus is fully geodesic so it's strong, but the opulus is a tunnel! Any advice would be great mate.
Unfortunately no I haven't tried the bigger one. Only gripe with the 2 man was the lack of headroom otherwise it was huge! I wouldn't take it on a mountain top but 90% of the time the conditions would be ok for it. Ideal in the rain with the extra porch space
Agree you don't see the opulus much, but don't agree the cloud peak 2 is easier to pitch. All poles same size, no threading through sleeves, in cold weather cloud peak 2 can be put up with gloves on, only thing I don't like is the top piece you have to put on afterwards and is not symmetrical. Cloud peak 2 far easier to drop. I suppose each to there own. Love both.
I was going off the amount of time it took me to pitch both and could only think it must have been the poles that slowed me down. I tie the cap on to one point so then it's always ready to go when pitching 👍
@@MrWildWales I found on one website it says 3000mm both fly and ground, not great for 4 season especially with 3000 only for the groundsheet, also seen on other websites its just 1000 ground and naturehikes site it's 4000 fly so any guess I think!!

CloudPeak 2....winner every time. Footprint much smaller for summit pitches, fully freestanding & semi-geod = manouverability & stability, adequate vestibule to cook one side & store gear in the other. If pitching in the rain, Opulus porch is redundant as waterlogged...there goes half your tent..! I got the CP2 & upgraded the poles to 9.5mm t6. Game changer.

Just I'm after a big backpack (or any advice from anyone on a large 70+ that isn't a bank breaker for now). I managed to get a new hydra 200 for under £100 ex display- really good for the money, I was wondering can someone tell me how they wash their tents - can they be put in a washing machine? Genuine question- sorry if its a little newbish🤣 ALT Mate & thanks for the vids, some I've come across have really helped me start..others, far less seem to be about promoting companies rather than useful info..each their own though, but the best learning curve was to get out there for me (showed I'd been had off on eBay with a crappy backpack-rips/things missing...so in need of another before I can go out again!)
Hey there thanks for watching the vids glad you like them. I try to do a mix of reviews and camp outs and tell you when I've had something for free but I don't promote anybody. Have a look into a Bergen for a rucksack. Never wash your tent!
@@MrWildWales thanks I was thinking if it can withstand what they claim it can a cold wash would of been fine but thanksfor the advice...so can you only sponge wash the insides... Cheers pal, some really helpful vids here. Lee.
For my style of backpacking (99% site camping, only camp off site if I've wildly over estimated my miles before setting off) I'd go with the Nallo 2 GT.... Sorry, Opalus 2.
@@MrWildWales Yeah, when I saw you getting into it I was reminded of Jeremy Clarkson struggling to fit into a small sports car. Personally I'd keep the Opalus if I were you. I've always loved tents with a large porch, especially during long dark nights and/or endless rain. Pity there's not two doors though, it's always handy to have a choice depending on the wind direction and/or where the view is (for taking photos).
@@paulsaunders193 Ha that's the only thing for me getting in and out isn't great. Yeah you don't get such a good panoramic view from inside. I think it's good the door being there next to the inner instead of crawling to the front.
@@MrWildWales My Nallo 2 has the door at the front of the porch, which is great for looking straight out. I can also open the zips from the top down, which is good for ventilating the tent when cooking but keeping most of it closed when the weather is bad. It's a smaller porch though, so I don't have to lean forward far to reach it. I did prefer the side doors on the Phreak though, easier to get in and out, and I could pile stuff up on the other side. Also could open a door and stay sheltered from the wind no matter which way it was blowing.
Cp2 is free standing so scores high for that and its easy to move. Opalus has its own merits but pretty low down so in same category as tempest pro 300 etc. I'd say keep them both!..
I used a Vango that is near identical to that Opalas cycle touring with two children , having the big vestibule on those rainy days way a godsend.

In the 3 a person of average height can sit in a camp chair in the vestibule. My days of sitting on the ground, legs folded or on my knees for extended periods are over.
Opalus 2 is my favoured of the 2 . so ill go with , you should keep the cloud peak . ill buy the opalus 2 lol .. 🤪😜
🤣🤣🤣
Yep, they are both very similar, do you think a hybrid of the 2 would be perfect?
I'd probably go with the opalus with more height and another door 👌
Does the rain drop in at the door on cloud peak?
Is cloud peak same as cloud something else? Forgot name
Can you view stars on either?
Yes it does drop straight down into the inner. There's a cloud up which is a different shape
@@MrWildWales thanks can you view stars on Opulus ? By moving stuff? From inside. ?
Cloud peak?
Um you'd probably have better luck at star gazing from the cloud peak
Nice one thanks
I went to see the doctor the other day and told him I like the cloud peak 2 and the opalus 2 and he said I’m two tents 😐
That story was in tents
What's the volume of the Opalus 2, in the bag?
I'm tempted to say very quiet 🤣. It's not too bulky around the same as most other tents
So that means 5, 7.5, 10 liters...?
No idea bud sorry
I’d stick with the Opalus 2. More room is always a good thing, that porch is like a cave !
It's pretty huge to be fair
Cloud peak two for me.
Nice thoughts there bud sounds good with thicker poles too
Where did you get the thicker poles from??cheers
@@Steven17011980 AliExpress...!
Hello. How tall are you and do you fit in the Opalus 2 with your sleeping bag and mat? Im 194 and afreid that my feet with hit the wall in the buttom.
Hi there mate, I'm 6 foot myself. I found the opalus a little short for me, so I think you definitely would.
@@MrWildWales Is it that steep in the button? It should be around 240cm in lenght? :(
@@christopherh4664 Well yeah you will probably be able to lie down ok but will have to crawl around to move and not be able to sit up.
Hi buddy for me I'd have to keep the cloudpeak 2 I can't wait to own one, modify the roof so water doesn't drip in ? 🤘🤘🏴🏴🏴
Yeah it's a good tent it's only that one thing that gets on my nerves of definitely still use it
cloud peak though all Naturehike are good ive had a cloud up and now a Naturehike Nebula can't fault them
I had the cloud up for a while that was a very good one 👍
Both good tents.
Cloud peak 2 for me. Reasons I don't take a lot of kit. I'm a short person. The room would be wasted in other..
Nice choice bud!
New to camping & your channel.. So personally (Mr.NoExperience) & being a short arse...I'd WANT the long one,(haha soz forgot what it's called already) love the big porch idea & great for me having 2 terriers that just love running in the mud tripping over guy lines before running into the tent to shake it all off! Lil b*****s, I'd have a Lil tarp in there & clean them off & feed em out there! Big shame about the rain getting in tho..is your eBay the same name as TH-cam? Just I'm after a big backpack (or any advice from anyone on a large 70+ that isn't a bank breaker for now).
I managed to get a new hydra 200 for under £100 ex display- really good for the money, I was wondering can someone tell me how they wash their tents - can they be put in a washing machine? Genuine question- sorry if its a little newbish🤣
ALT Mate & thanks for the vids, some I've come across have really helped me start..others, far less seem to be about promoting companies rather than useful info..each their own though, but the best learning curve was to get out there for me (showed I'd been had off on eBay with a crappy backpack-rips/things missing...so in need of another before I can go out again!)
Lee.
@@Riiiizla Yeah I would just wipe it down with a wet cloth if its dirty and make sure its fully dry before packing each time
@@MrWildWales thanks pal.
For my style of backpacking (99% site camping, only camp off site if I've wildly over estimated my miles before setting off) I'd go with the Nallo 2 GT.... Sorry, Opalus 2.
Ah that's where I've seen it before 😂
Cloud peak +1 👌
A lot of people showing love for the cloud peak
I think I like having 2 doors on a tent too much
It is good mind you I always seem to only use one of them
Gotta be cloud peak 2 from what you've said
Don't mean to put you off though it's still a good tent ☺️
To be fair, you are quite tall. I don't think the headroom would be a problem for me and many other people. In fact, how tall are you?
You might be alright I'm 6 foot. I can sit in the porch fine or unclipping the inner
Opalus better, I think)
Cp2 is free standing so scores high for that and its easy to move. Opalus has its own merits but pretty low down so in same category as tempest pro 300 etc. I'd say keep them both!..
Its a no brainer - Ditch the Opalus and keep the cloud peak.
Probably right there
If the Cloud peak isn’t any good in the rain then the porch becomes useless. Opalus wins.
I have an opulus 3 and there isn't a better tent on the market ..
Does that one give a bit more head height?
1st🤘😎🦡
