I've encountered many things on Earth that are much louder than a Cisco 2801. I live about fifteen miles from one of SpaceX's rocket test facilities. I can easily hear, and feel, rocket engine tests from my home. :-) As far as fan noise goes, I've had the opportunity to get to know two computer rooms fairly well. In college I worked as a volunteer operator in a computer room with two air handlers and a VAX 11/750. Voices had to be raised when talking to someone in there. After college I spent a couple of decades in a computer room as an IBM mainframe operator. That computer room had an IBM mainframe, Shark DASD array, an AS/400, a few racks full of Windows servers, and a few racks full of network equipment. On top of all that, there are three air handlers in there. It was a little noisy in there. Now I've moved out into an office near that computer room where I can hear myself think. :-)

If you want to use addresses in the 172. range, you could swap your middle two octets and use the 172.16.50.0 subnet. Your example VoIP VLAN would then be in the private address range.

What commands would I issue if the router comes right after my modem. The modem is bridged so it will pass along my public IP to what device its plugged into. I want there to be NAT and a DHCP pool

I got a 3945e coming with ipbase security and uc with cme. Hoping to have it setup for fxo. Data and voip. Not sure about the vlans. Got my switch setup with dhcp. Not the router. Not sure i am doing it right. Certainly dont want phones on their own vlan. Because i only have 1 port at each location and they need to share data and voicr

I know next to nothing about VLANs at this point. I have some learning to do. With the router connected to the switch, the switch connected to your normal network, and all ports on the switch assigned to VLAN 50, can the router and/or the switch connect to your normal network?

from my understanding only voice traffic will be routed over vlan 50 in that case. Normal network traffic for your main network from the same ports would still be able to access whatever their default vlan is (usually 1)

Should I start from scratch, Adam?

I tried this a few times but I can't get the router to assign an IP to anything. What am I doing wrong?

Hmm. sounds like DHCP is not working. I have found these routers can take a pretty long time to assign IP's for the first time. double check your configs on your switch and router

Depends on the model, the whole 7900 range is kinda strange. especially the 7911
