    My only issue with the ulanzi is the center column has a slight wobble when extended. I have two of them and they both have it. EDIT - I have tightened it down and it’s much better now.

    Hey, Brent. I actually thought those first two sunset images were pretty good. I was glad to come across your review of this tripod because I have a question. While most of the user reviews are positive, I have read a couple of them that have had the same complaint. These users report that it is impossible to tighten down the center column enough to completely eliminate wobble. To be clear, I am not talking about the entire tripod wobbling. I’m talking about the center column wobbling and it’s fitting. I’m curious if you noticed the same problem.

    • @Flo-con
      @Flo-con ปีที่แล้ว

      I've just noticed this wobbling with the unit I just got. A bit disappointing.

    • @timothylinn
      @timothylinn ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Flo-con I'm sorry to read that you have the wobble problem. I ended up buying one from B&H during the brief time they actually sold this model and it has no wobble at all. I've also noticed that the lever that one releases to move the center column up and down doesn't lay tight against the tripod when it's closed. I don't love the fact that this leaves me wondering if I should be pushing down with more force to lock it but it has also occurred to me that perhaps the units with wobbly center columns have a locking lever that isn't adjusted to hold quite as tight as my unit does. One TH-camr mentioned that she got wobble because the two parts of the center column were not joined together tightly enough. I'm not sure that accounts for wobble with relatively small extensions of the center column though.

    • @Flo-con
      @Flo-con ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timothylinn Thanks for replying. I wonder if wobble is the right term. It may be more "play" on the sideways axis from the locking lever th-cam.com/users/shortsyG1X7GQ9cAE so yours does not exhibit this at all? I might ask for a replacement

    • @timothylinn
      @timothylinn ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Flo-con Yes, that's exactly what has been reported but mine is rock solid. No play at all. I just pulled my Zero Y out and duplicated what you are doing in the video. No movement at all.

    • @timothylinn
      @timothylinn ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Flo-con Have you tried looking for a way to tighten that center column locking lever? On mine there is a significant amount of resistance when I press down on it. I see that there is some kind of hex screw beneath the lever. There may be other potential places to tighten it with the center column removed. If you don't want to experiment, I would ask Ulanzi support. I've had various email exchanges with them over the last few months about different things and they've always responded the next business day with helpful feedback. If there is something that needs to be tightened, I would bet they know what needs to be done.

    I've been in the market for a compact and lightweight tripod, mostly to use with my large format camera (despite what many people think, you don't need a big heavy tripod for that... my typical kit is 2.5 kg).
    The pan head is crucial for me, I'll level the camera and then need make only slight adjustments. PD head would have to be replaced immediately, making it even more expensive.
    One use case you haven't mentioned is taking your tripod on hikes or anywhere on foot more than 10 min. this is where my 2.5 kg 80 cm Manfrotto 055 is a PITA to carry around, let alone attach to a backpack. That's my main use case for a travel tripod. And on some trails you really need both hands free.
    If you stay close to the car I feel you could get away with any tripod.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well since this video, I have taken this tripod on many, very long hikes through deserts, mountains, and more. I have taken it with me across the world, on planes, trains, and in cars, buses, you name it. This thing has travelled a lot of miles since I first got it and I will still say that it is definitely my favorite ultralight travel tripod that I've ever used.

    This is one of the only videos that doesn't sound like an Ulanzi ad. Thank you for your honest review. What are other tripods in a similar price range that are worth considering? I want to be certain before spending $350 and committing to the F38 system. Thank you.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks man, I appreciate that!
      So, I've still been using this Ulanzi tripod and it's proving to be a great travel tripod (especially for smaller/lighter setups), but there's definitely a lot of other great stuff out there in this price range, probably just nothing this small and comparatively sturdy. That said, I did recently get one from Sirui , the ST 124, and it's also really great so far. It's a bit bigger, but not by much, but sturdier I think, and has a traditional ball head (which is decent but not amazing), I'll have a review on it soon.
      Benro also makes some decent travel tripods in this price range, like their bat and rhino series tripods. Those seem pretty good too, though I haven't tried them specifically, I've had a lot of Benro stuff over the years and they've always been solid.

    • @Ashurus
      @Ashurus ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm considering it too. One fellow says he can use a lens as long as a 150-600 Sigma on it. Does that seem plausible? If I can use my 150-450 with it (Pentax) I'm going to consider it myself.

    • @BrentHall

      That sigma is a pretty heavy lens. I suppose you could do it if it were just in the horizontal and level position with the center column not extended, but any variation to that would definitely rapidly decrease the stability.

      Well, I don't think I would really. Even though they're similarly priced and they both technically say travel tripod, I think they're pretty different. The Ulanzi is way smaller and lighter and packs down smaller as well, but the centennial is way sturdier and easier to use IMO, although it seems to be impossible to get anything from Colorado tripod company anymore, so the Ulanzi definitely wins there.

The tubes looked like it was constructed from a sheet of carbon fiber where the seam show from top to bottom instead of a filament weave (all my tripods and monopods including others I've seen does not show a seam). Please check your zero y tripod if it is the same as the one I had. I really like the design of this tripod but worried how the tubes are made.

    Compactness isn't just length but girth... Ask people you know if "girth" matters! 😋 But seriously, when the Peak Design travel tripod was still a Kickstarter funded project, I put some money in and got it at a nicely discounted price. I'm happy with it for the most part. I did just order an Innorel carbon fiber RT90C tripod with the bowl head, which has an 88 lbs load capacity 40mm diameter legs, 63" height without the center column... a much more robust tripod but far more bulky and weighty. The good thing about that is that it will likely fend much better in windy conditions as well as better, longer and interchangeable spike attachments.

      I definitely didn't think about those two aspects of it, sorry man. I hope you find the info you're looking for out there, but it sounds like you're leaning to PD for those things. Anyways, thanks for stopping by and commenting!

      Ulanzi now offers lifetime warranty, too. The resale value of PD is questionable, too. Today they dropped prices on their carbon tripod to $420, for example, no doubt because of Ulanzi.

    What amp do you have ??? Is that a mini HB i see on the Bridge of your Fender ?

    • @BrentHall

      The amp is just a little Fender amp, nothing interesting but it gets the job done and sounds alright. Yeah it's a custom 2002 HSS strat.

    Do you still recommend Colorado Tripod? I placed a deposit in January and still haven’t heard from them…. I’m probably gonna get my money back cause it seems that it’s a little long for an order.

      Sadly I wouldn't. I do still love and use my CO tripod all the time, but idk what's up with them. I feel like they gave up and I highly doubt you'd ever be able to get one. I wanted to pick up another one of their Aspen ballheads but I don't think it's going to happen.

      @@BrentHall yeah I sent an email follow up and it had some attitude attached to it… I was a machinist in a past life and it seems unreal that they are not building products faster than this (if at all). Thank you for the update, I’m gonna look at other tripod legs!

      I think they just quit. Idk what's up, but it's definitely a bummer, and even more so that they're not communicating with people.

      And it also sucks because they made me look bad since I did that video and now everyone thinks I'm associated with them, which I'm definitely not. 😒😮‍💨

      @@BrentHall yeah I never thought bad of you! I just wanted to see if I was missing something or at least gives a heads up. It’s a shame they did that to you and customers.

    Be careful saying it is a ripoff. Peak Designs ain’t that revolutionary. Peak Designs was simply the first arriving on the scene in a genre that had already been evolving and innovating.

      I don't think I actually said it was a ripoff. I think I said something to the effect of "my initial reaction or thought was that they might have ripped off PD's design a bit"; however, after using this tripod for a while now, I can definitely say that there are so many differences and better design choices with it that's it's significantly different and better (IMHO) than the PD tripod. I think the word I used in the video was "inspired" and I stand by that phrase, lol.
