In the winter months, between November and February, Praia do Norte has some of the biggest waves ever recorded in the world. This community has become friendly hosts to surfers and site-seers from around the planet. The museum next to the lighthouse has detailed maps and the scientific explanation of how the ocean floor is unique in this area. There is a deep canyon which forces the waves to reach the magnificent heights that they do. The museum also houses the signed surfboards and biographies of the world's most renowned surfers who have miraculously ridden these waves. The mountains inland as well as the coastline to the north and south provide ample opportunities for exploration and stunning scenic views.
