    I’ve never had any luck pushing color film more than 2 stops. I applaud you for giving it a go. Your sacrifice has saved everyone a lot of $$$. Thank you for taking one for the team!

    Oof! One thing to look at is the EV adjust dial, I was always bumping the dial on my G2 and kept over exposing.

      I wish I could blame the EV dial but sadly not in this case Alex ha ha!

    I wonder if your issue was the camera metering system. You should pull out a light meter to double check and set the exposure manual. The grain would be better controlled if the exposure was longer. The scanner is really pushing the grain. I guess I am saying you need to go out and do things manual.

    • @MattLovesCameras
      @MattLovesCameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you could be right mate! I do have a nice Sekonic meter, maybe I will take it along next time I do something like this 😊

      @@MattLovesCameras Yes, worth giving it another go, so you can see if the exposure meter works in low light situations.

    I think an interesting video idea in the future would be a Cinestill 400D & 50D comparison video. I know the speeds are quite different on these stocks, but the stocks seem to have very similar characteristics despite that. Could make for an interesting video to go along with all your other Cinestill 400D videos. Cheers.

    thanks Matt! I love the rescale image but yeah seems the film shines at 1600 but maybe 3200 depends on what you shoot, very odd!

    What's it like at 800? Also, did you use the G1 at 1600? Maybe you should have stuck with the same camera when going up to 3200.

    • @MattLovesCameras
      @MattLovesCameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Thanks for watching. I haven't shot 400D at ISO 800 yet... I kinda figured it looked so good at 1600 I haven't bothered ha ha. Unfortunately I don't have any ISO 3200 stickers to fool my little point and shoot cameras, and the exposure comp only goes to -2 stops on the T3... but I agree with you, would've been a better comparison for sure!

    Hi Matt. I shot a roll of Portra 400 @ 3200 once and pushed three stops in development (against the labs advice). The results were; usable but very contrasty, with very black shadows. Since then I've shot Portra 800 many times at night @ 3200 with great success. It's the most pushable colour film that I've ever used. However, in scenes that are not well lit, it's a no go. No colour film will work without sufficient ambient light, colour film just does not have that amount of latitude, it needs light. Thanks for the test video!

    • @MattLovesCameras
      @MattLovesCameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much John! That's great advice. Would you believe I blew my last 2 rolls of Portra 800 recently in the Espio Mini vs Sleek comparison... wish I'd used a 200 or 400 speed film now! Keen to shoot Portra 800 at ISO 3200 now after hearing about your success!

      @@MattLovesCameras FYI, I've shot it with SLR's and Medium Format, so I had maximum control of the exposure. Fast lenses also help. Wish you good luck!

    And couldn't it be that the same thing happens to this type of film as to Cinestill 800T? If you force 800T to 3200 (2 stops) the manufacturer recommends that the laboratory force it 3 stops to obtain satisfactory results. By forcing 3 stops on the 400D, the laboratory should have adjusted the development time appropriately, and it does not correspond to 3 stops, maybe 4

    Some of the images like the sunset are good. The colors seem muted/muddy in other images. @1600 ISO the colors are vibrant. I still can't find any 400D. There is an event in November/December at our local zoo in the desert. It is a light festival with more than a million lights including life-size, luminescent animal lanterns, This would be perfect for the halation properties of the 400D.

      Oh wow that sounds amazing - fingers crossed you find some in time! Lomo 800 and Portra 800 are also really good pushed to 1600!

    This is the second time I have seen Cinestill 400D shot at ISO 3200 with disappointing results, so I'm thinking, that it's not you or your camera.
    Love the lighthouse shot with the black background and also the sunset shots.
    From personal experience, I try to keep the blacked out ground/buildings in the bottom of my sunset shots to get more of the sky in my frame because it's the beautiful colors in the sky I'm after anyway. But of course, as a very experienced sunset shooter, you know all about how you want your shots to turn out. 😉
    I'll make a mental note to myself to only shoot my rolls of 400D (that finally arrived on Friday) at ISO 1600 and below.

      @@MattLovesCameras Thanks. It will be a while though. I'm shooting some Fuji Color C200 - old stock at the moment, and seeing what this digicam thing is about too.
      Oh, and my home dev project is going nowhere at the moment, so 400D is quite a long way down the list at the moment.

    Looks like at 3200 you're going to need to push the exposure for a fair bit longer. Using a PnS camera won't cut it. This is more in the realm of a proper SLR and bulb mode shooting. Tripod time.

    • @MattLovesCameras
      @MattLovesCameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I was at fault for some of these, the G1 needs contrast for the autofocus so it isn't great in low light. Oh well, you live and learn 😊 Thanks for watching Carl!

      @@MattLovesCameras it's best to use a hand held spot meter for night scenes or even cell phone apps. Most cameras have avarage metering and all. Great job regardless!

    According to Ex Lab worker Photo Dude NZ the labs do a mix of digital as well as developing push. I think the digital push on this roll is part of the problem, there is no real black point in most of the images. But I really love the lighthouse shots :)
