  • Bridge Bounces While Trains Cross It, HUGE Train With 5 Locomotives, Man Boards Moving Train That Is Over 2 Miles Long & Railroad Radio Audio! Norfolk Southern and CSX freight trains in Ohio! Count the cars on this gigantic mixed freight train in Hamilton, Ohio on the Toledo Sub.
    We return to the bouncing bridge to get a good look at fast trains from the creek level. 2 trains are featured on this Norfolk Southern line near Somerville, Ohio. Somerville was a town at one time but was dissolved years ago. The old fire station is now a private garage. Today, Somervilles claim to fame is having an excellent Railfan location in the country. Listen in on trains on 160.440 and 452.9375 for the end of train device. The EOT can be misleading because you can pick up trains on the nearby CSX line in New Miami. If the signal is strong it is probably on the NS line but a good scanner can pick them up all the way to Hamilton.
    Next we run up the road to Hamilton to see how to properly board a slow moving freight train. This CSX train was so long that you can hear the defect detector activate while the train is passing me. The detector is a couple of miles to the north. I heard on my scanner that they were going to do some type of crew change and I was in the right spot at the right time. That was pretty interesting to see how crew members board a train without it stopping and how they get inside the locomotive. This train had 5 locomotives although not all of them were running. I think the geeps were just being moved from one location to another. Best frequencies here are 160.230 and 160.320. That train was unbelievably long. Count the cars and become a hero!
    Filmed March 9, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

    It was nice to see the two mixed freight trains at the bouncing bridge. When you mentioned in your description of the video that a man was going to board a moving train that is over two miles long, my first thought was that the man was going to climb onto the train to get on the over side of the train because the train was moving slowly. AS it turned out the man was a CSX employee who was a member of the crew.

    At the beginning of the video, I like the angle of view below the plane of the track of this train which seems to rush on us! It reinforces the impression of speed. And always the bridge deck animated by oscillations!

    The Gap in the bridge actually seems to be growing. The biggest moves seemed to happen with a 50 ft car that's loaded. It actually is reminiscent of a telegraph trying to tap out SOS. The CSX train didn't want to be known as the slowest train in Cincinnati so it picked up the pace. You seem to see this train almost every time you're there as the pattern includes the french fry cars upfront then the group of old scrap metal cars and the flip side of new coil cars. And we can't forget the lone MQT boxcar which is one little cog of the supply chain that means a lot to some company. Ho hum. Norfie is tired from her nap.. For you midwesterners who remember old school wrestling she was getting ready for her next match with her version of The Claw like Baron von Raschke. Go get 'em tiger!

    Why hasn't this situation been reported to NS? Metal fatigue will inevitably result in catastrophic structural failure. How does this bridge continue to pass inspection when it is that far out of tolerance? No excuses.

    This video reminded me of when I was a young boy trains ran through Pamperin Park in Green Bay, Wis. a few times a day. There was a train bridge over the Duck Creek River in one spot.
    My younger brother, my cousin and myself were walking the tracks near this bridge and heard a far off train horn indicating that a train would soon be coming. In a dare, we all somehow got under the bridge and were only 12 inches below the tracks when the train arrived. I remember getting sandblasted with small stones as the locomotives went by and the noise was deafening. Being so close to the amazing power of these engines is something I will never forget. It was one of the most amazing and dumbest things I ever did in my life.

    Put this on your bucket list. The Golden Spike Tower in North Platte, NB. It over looks the Bailey Yard. The largest railroad yard in North America. It has two classication yards one for east one for west. The yard is 300 TRACKS WIDE AND SIX MILES LONG. The tower is not on UP property. But right next to it on the west part of the yard near the engine shops. The top is enclosed with windows all the way around. It is eight stores up. They have people that are known what you are seeing and to answer questions you have. There is another floor just under it that is open that faces the yard. And get this. 150 trains pass through this yard each day. With three tracks each way. No passenger trains go this way. There is a unusual two tracks next to the tower that is 700 feet long. The railroad will have handcar races on it. Not sure when they do that. Steven Sipes

There comes a time every year near the date of the Equinox (or March Madness basketball), when rising water (see video), warmer days (50°F or so), and changing vibrations felt in the cemetary (see bouncing bridge), bring forth a female-looking creature from an unmarked burial plot who walks and stalks the NS bridge and rails. I don't understand why the RR doesn't think that movement of the bridge isn't a problem. I would think that the constant movement of the rails as many trains pass would induce metal fatigue in them, possibly leading to cracking of the rails and eventual breakage. But maybe I just don't understand enough of how this kind of movement really affects the rails.

    • @GilmerJohn
      @GilmerJohn ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm inclined to agree. A solution might be to pre-load both ends to the concrete. The weight of the train would just take away the pre-load and there would not be any movement. I suspect that the bridge was initially designed to be just supported at the ends but it was "upgraded" with the center support.

    I think the guy that hopped on the train is taking a ride to another yard, then he'll be part of a crew on another train!

    To answer the "What's the hurry" question, for the railroads, time is money... actually, its the same for the trucking industry, especially for independents, who make their money based on how many loads they haul.

    NS recent derailments have me looking at the bouncy bridge with all the more concern; are they REALLY sure this bridge is OK?

    5 engines in the lead position. It's no wonder they're pulling trucks out from under the cars. Break it up with DPUs.
