You have such a gift for teaching, Bernadette. I like your explanation of the musician's circle of fifths, comparing it to a chemist's periodic table.

Awesome Bernadette! Never seen anyone teach it is such simple terms. Most courses and schools go too fast. Thank you!

This is an excellent 30 day course! I have been playing guitar for 3 years and have not learned Music Theory. You have a gift of explaining Music Theory in a very basic way that’s easy for a 68 year old t understand. Thank you!

This vid made Days 2 to 5, super clearer. I learned ukulele from Teacher Bernadette fr her Japan videos like 3 years ago. I knew nothing about music and playing, but Teacher made all explanations understandable. I lacked practice so, have not played for many months. Trying to get inspired again.

I'm enjoying and learning. Just bought the .PDF. I'm not exactly sure at the moment how theory will help my guitar playing but I know it will come together with your instruction. Thanks. Oh, yea, the review is priceless.

Fabulous challenge! You have a gift for constructing and explaining music theory especially for beginners like me. I find it easy to follow and understand. All very logical. The recap on day 6 is a great idea, just the time for consolidating what we have learnt so far. Time duration of each video is good as it allows us to grasp the concepts without making them too complex and “heavy”.
Thanks Bernadette, I look forward each day for the next lesson.

I've actually been watching these lessons on the projector screen (Bernadette teaching at 100 inches is WIN), so please forgive my previous lack of comments. I logged into TH-cam just now because I really wanted, and want, to say, "Thank you, Bernadette." I've been playing guitar for eight years now, mostly in open tuning and with a finger slide so I could avoid as much theory as possible. I simply found the music theory daunting previously because there's so much to remember! You are teaching these lessons in such a way that I don't feel daunted, but I also don't feel like I'm being talked down to. Even greater, for me at least, is that I'm actually retaining what I'm learning!
So, I want to thank and encourage YOU, Bernadette. You say that you're thinking of being an online teacher. I say, in eight years there has been NOBODY who has helped me with music theory the way you are doing! You not only should teach, I'd absolutely say that you were BORN to teach!
Thank you, Bernadette, and may you be blessed, as you are blessing countless, untold others.
    My best wishes,
    Mr Bear

      Mr. Bear,
This comment is the best comment I’ve received in my career as a music teacher here on TH-cam. Thank you. I’ve taken a screenshot to print and frame. Thank you so so much 🥰

Why is it that the major scale is increased by the 5tth? Why not another like the second or 3rd? Is there a reason why the 5th was chosen?

    • @Tokechan
      @Tokechan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      it's
      A) how it works out to have it be a repeating closed circle with as few steps as possible but with all the notes, and no notes repeated I believe (a circle of thirds is something people use too, but if you draw the circle of 5ths with the little interior relative minor scale circle too, then the circle of 3rds is built in if you look at a root note, and then the minor for the 5th, and then the actual 5th, eg C, Em is relative to G, and then G for CEG triad)
      and
B)the 5th interval has its own fancy name, the "Dominant" for a reason-its an important relationship in functional harmony, with the 5th feeling like it wants to "resolve" to the root.
      and
      C) the circle of 5ths puts all of the keys in order from least accidentals, to most, incrementing by 1 for each spot you go forward or back from c, eg G has 1 sharp, D has 2, F has 1 flat, Bb has 2, etc. which is very useful, and looking at the letters near any given root chord gives you the most related chords, if you see a song with that clump of chords in it, the root will be the one in the center.
A circle of 2nds would just be a giant circle of every scale in a row I think, a circle of 4ths is just the circle of 5ths backwards (which is also useful but you can just look counter-clockwise on the circle of 5ths for that), and I'm not sure about a circle of 6ths or 7ths haha, they just aren't useful for anything really I guess? :p For 7ths at least that's just backwards 2s. Not sure about applications for a circle of 5ths

C major scale - no sharps
      G major scale - 1 sharp
(G is the 5th step of the C major scale. That’s why it comes next)

I've watched this review twice now (I'm a bit behind on the course) & it really helps! 🙂 I'm glad for the refresher & that there's going to be other refresher videos throughout the course. Thank you again 🙏🏻🙂
p.s. I used to play the violin (it was decades ago now) & the only phrase I remember learning is All Cows Eat Grass. I don't know what it was to do with now. 😊😅

I find a repeating pattern like WWWH WWWH easier and then I just translate the first W to R for Root for RWWH WWWH. Might be extra convolution rather than less for some, but works for me. :p
Also for order of sharps/flats, the order of flats already has an english word in it, BEAD, and then I just remember Go Catch Fish, so Bead Go Catch Fish, and once you've got it one way the other way isn't too hard, so just fish catch go daeb for sharps.
In case that helps anyone haha
also building the circle by figuring out the fifths is a good exercise, but if you wanna just recall it easy to draw it out and use it for reference, you just go fish catch go daeb clockwise and then going the other way starting in the blank next to the f, it's bead Go (and they're all flat (and the bottom 3, so Db, Gb and B if you have C centred at the top can be their enharmonic equivalents of C#, F# and Cb if you want without any double-sharps or double-flats, and C# is a bit easier to remember than Db since its just the opposite of C, every note is now sharp, whereas Db has 5 flats so you gotta remember C and F aren't flat in it)).
