  • Regulars to the channel will know that Kate (AKA PyoorKate) is a keen classic car fan (as are Nikki and Winter too). And for the last few months she's been busy researching ahead of converting her 1969 4-door Morris Minor Deluxe to electric... a car she's had for most of her life.
    Today, Kate explains her choice of inverter, and runs through some of the electronics tools she's bought to make sure the build goes smoothly

    Kate, I am absolutely in awe of you. Intelligent, articulate, knowledgeable, competent, witty and you also read instructions. Also, my respect for the conversion on the Morrie. Though I would have lent more towards an Austin A40.

    6.20 you sure that's not your sonic screwdriver? 😁😆👍
    Absolutely fascinating! I've always loved fixing stuff but never had the opportunity to learn about electronics... being apparently female and a great deal older it wasn't on the radar for me as a youngster. So refreshing to see what can be achieved with an enquiring mind and parents who are able to encourage natural abilities.
    Really loving this series and wish you the best of luck with Rebecca 😊👍

    I liked the axle stand reference, how many times has my nose been rubbing the under side of parts of my smart Roadster! I fully respect Do'ers who have a go at making something work. My neighbour has a Morris 1000 he spent 8 years getting it up and running in it's original-ish guise to the disgust of some of the concours enthusiasts, his son wanted him to fit a V8! ( he has an MG ZS as a daily) liked the Beeb Micro reference did the same in raw machine code a long time ago (to programme an eprom for a Z80 circuit)

      Funny story: A while back I saw some axle stands with a warning on them that said "Do not work under a car that is supported by these stands".

    If I may also recommend two additional items to pick up for your surface mount rework if you don't already have them: solder paste (in a syringe) and a fine copper braid. The paste is usually a better choice for soldering SMD parts, the braid (and the flux you already have) will really help clean up those pads before you put new parts on. The rest of your kit looks like a great start though. SMD work takes some getting used to, but it is not as bad as it seems at first (unless you are trying to deal with stuff smaller than 0603 or so :) ).

      @kensmith5694 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I too suggested "solderwick"
      If they were doing a lot of it, I would suggest one of those hot air PCB warmers. It makes soldering a lot of parts easier.

    It's going to be fun to see this thing get back on the road, particularly if you can make it a "daily driver" for short range trips. I hope you do something to it that draws people in to ask questions, giving you the opportunity to educate people, like IDK, paint an exhaust on the back with flowers coming out of it. It doesn't need to be silly, of course.
    Wait, how about paint lightning bolts on it in the style of flames on a hot rod car?

    Hi Kate, if you ever have need for more liquid flux, you can make your own on the cheap. You can buy 15g chunks of rosin on ebay for under $3 which you can crush & dissolve in denatured alcohol/methylated spirit/95% ethanol and put in a 50ml needle applicator bottle. I like 30g rosin in 40ml ethanol. Works as good as the pre-made stuff which is priced like printer ink.

  • @Graham_Wideman

    Hi Kate. If you're hand soldering SMD parts using a soldering iron and solder wire, here's a video with some high-res montages of soldering techniques: mostly solder one pin while placing the part, then solder the other pins. th-cam.com/video/naZ0Wzpr_Hk/w-d-xo.html , th-cam.com/video/naZ0Wzpr_Hk/w-d-xo.html , th-cam.com/video/naZ0Wzpr_Hk/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/naZ0Wzpr_Hk/w-d-xo.html That said, as others have commented, for any appreciable quantity of SMD parts, solder paste and a hot air station (or an oven) is the way to go. Not the least advantage to solder paste is that it's tacky, so you can place the components onto the pads and they stick in place temporarily. Then you heat them with the hot air tool and the surface tension of the melted solder draws the components into precise position.

    You don't need a flywheel and clutch. Just use a rubber coupling between the motor and gearbox, I have built an electric Lotus 7 replica and I just made up a solid coupling between gearbox and motor. I use second gear most of the time that will run up to 90Kph and if I go on to the freeway I select 3rd gear.

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uncoupling the mass of the motor as you change gears is easier on the synchros.

    They have USB-powered battery soldering irons these days? Whatever next! How long does it run, one wonders?
    I desperately need one of those magnifying lamps too - I have exactly the same problem with aging eyes. Your electronics experience seems to be the same vintage as most of mine (although I have done a fair amount of SMD rework at a previous job too) :-)

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My eyes have gotten bad enough that even with one of those I find it hard to do 0402 parts. I instead you a much stronger magnifier that is intended for some hobby or another and a spot light. 0201 is out of the question.

      I ordered the Mustool MDS120M (www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001692831653.html) which I've not really had a chance to use. Replacing the caps has turned into a more complex process than I expected (there's surprising!) and so I'm still working on that! I'll definitely circle back and let you know how it functions though. There's a review here from someone who has way more experience though: th-cam.com/video/EUr3k9Jdx58/w-d-xo.html ^Kate

    Well, as a former feminist scholar (subsequently a lawyer and now novelist and kid's book author), I wonder whether some of the 'concern' over your tinkering with high voltage was because you're a woman. Regardless, as someone who's been turning wrenches for >45 years, and whose side business is enabling DIY projects for A-Series powered cars including the Moggy, I am thrilled to be watching this project and getting increasingly excited about converting a Moggy--but likely a Traveler, so as to make room for the batteries. - Joel
