----- Following is the translation ----- 0:17 (Bando) Welcome to the show. It seems like you attained to the end, rather than just an expert. How old are you? 0:26 (Shioda) I am 74. 1:02 (Bando) How about your breath. 1:03 (Shioda) I am moving naturally. So my breath is the same. 1:15 (Bando) Now, question. Mr Shioda studied Aikido's body movement from an animal. What is this animal? 1:28 (Bando) Body movement (Tai-sabaki) means "dodging" from the opponent? 1:34 (Shioda) Yes, and also the "circular movement". 1:42 (Bando) So you learned these movements from observing an animal right? 3:45 (Bando) It was the gold fishes. So he learned swift movements from fishes. 4:27 (narrator) Gold fishes never hit each other when they swim. Their basic movements were circular movements. 5:02 (Bando) Oh I see. Many fishes never hit each other when they swim. Also they are very swift. 5:07 (Bando) However, when I observe, it seems your opponents are so good that makes you look swift and good. It seems like that. 5:15 (Shioda) Well maybe some people take that way. 5:22 (Shioda) Mr. Bando do you want to play with me? 5:26 (Bando) No no, I don't want to make 74 years old so serious. 5:30 (Bando) Then I go now. 5:48 (Bando) Well, this is not what we mean to show on this program. 5:49 (Shioda) I am sorry. 5:50 (Bando) It is too late to say sorry. 5:53 (woman) You are really strong. 5:55 (Bando) Please do not come back again in this studio. 5:57 (Shioda) Well I got it. 6:03 (Bando) Well I heard Aikido became very popular among women recently. 6:05 (Shioda) You will get a good figure (after practicing Aikido) 6:13 (Bando) Please go back. Thank you. 6:20 (woman) Are you ok? Slapped like this. 6:23 (Bando) Please do not go against to the people who practice Aikido. Mr.Bando used to be a professional baseball player. He was apparently not happy, but left a valuable video to the future audience.
I absolutely adore Shioda. Not only does have an absolutely amazing style of Aikido, that is both firm, fast as hell, precise, and beautiful - but he also always seem to have tons of fun, smiling from ear to ear :)
Shidoa sensei's showed how Aikido should react to real world. when the guy grabbed him, he just connected to his arm. Once the guy use power then sensei react and finish the show. Aikido's advantage is to connect with opponent, no matter what attack it is.
Also, the reason why Shioda kancho was studying goldfish was that no matter how they were disturbed or how crowded they are, when they swim away to avoid danger, they never seem to collide into one another. This perfect evasion was what kancho wanted to research. He wanted to see what made them so agile and elusive, aside from basic biological differences. Specifically, he wanted to see if their movements can be adapted into a body movement (tai sabaki), just like the chinese do with animals.
A little hint from an aikidoka from Yoshinkan. Kancho wanted the presenter to grab him properly, but he wouldn't give a good attack. Sensei can deal with anything this dude throws at him, but the presenter doesn't have good ukemi, so if sensei were to use something too powerful he would seriously damage the poor fella. Since it's in poor taste to injure your host, he decided to show something powerful but nondamaging, which thanks to the hesistant grab, was made impossible, hence the face slap.
There are some who consider Gozo Shioda to be the best Aikidoist in the world. Here was a perfect, unrehearsed demonstration of just how effective and 'clean' Aikido can be. Lesson: Don't grab the master's gi.
Master Shioda had only wanted to perform a simple wrist lock demo on the male host but the prideful chap instead roughed him up with a lapel grab hence that embarrassing fall. Dumb.
+Charels Neal Because you are not a fighter, when I fought an Aikido guy with 9 years of pratice, I just kicked his ass really bad, he had no notion of what to do in a real fight.
He was more entertaining to listen to than the presenters, who were supposed to be "entertainers" themselves, and he was one of the most awesome Aikido masters who have lived. Everyone should learn from him and enjoy what they do.
@lordtains The wrote Cat, Mouse, and Fresh Fish (means alive fish) each one of the competitive explained what he wrote, After that The right answer is FISH, The Aikido is similar to Fish. if you see this small fish, you cannot catch it easily, do you know why? Because she moving very very quickly in the time that you think you catch it but you haven't, all these means that the Aikido depends on Agility, Speed, and Time to produce the little bit of Power to make the opponent under your control
@lordtains This scene about a game show, they greeted the Founder of Goza Shioda in the program to ask the competitive a question about something has relation with Aikido.. so the first part was greeting and showing some skills with two opponents, and the competitive of the program has to focus on what he did because the question is about that. So after that the question was The Aikido of Yoshinkan is similar to one of the animals, so what is the animal ?

I mean, that was almost a textbook kata-mochi sokumen irimi-nage. Only difference is in the classic form you hit them with your elbow instead of your hand. (Actually you throw them by sliding your arm across their neck, but it's very much going to be an elbow to the chin if your adrenaline is up)

The gold fish analogy is brilliant!!! Well played Sensei Shioda! Nice job narrating. 👍
Thz q so much😍
Thank you for the translation. You rock.
Youre a HERO
I absolutely adore Shioda. Not only does have an absolutely amazing style of Aikido, that is both firm, fast as hell, precise, and beautiful - but he also always seem to have tons of fun, smiling from ear to ear :)
very impressive how shioda allows that the presenter grab him, and then with the twist of his arm de-establizate to the big guy. Real aikido
Shidoa sensei's showed how Aikido should react to real world. when the guy grabbed him, he just connected to his arm. Once the guy use power then sensei react and finish the show. Aikido's advantage is to connect with opponent, no matter what attack it is.
Thank you for sharing this. I wish it had subtitles. Gozo Shioda is awesome. Love the technique he does at 5:30 too!
And todays lesson...Never unexpectedly grab an Aikido master. EVER..lol
Yes sir, never!
love and admire his kindness
i think that is because shioda sensei is a true budoka
and youth nowadays should learn and follow that
And people say aikido doesn't work? The dude was twice his size and shioda is 74! That was brilliant

Lesson: Don't grab the master's gi.
Master Shioda had only wanted to perform a simple wrist lock demo on the male host but the prideful chap instead roughed him up with a lapel grab hence that embarrassing fall. Dumb.
I remember attending a lecture by him back about 1080, he was most impressive!

Great, thanks for posting his book is good "Dynamic Aikido"
Very humble man.
gozo shioda was 74 at this , and the host guy was fomer pro baseballer .

I was skeptical before I went to a real dojo get your balance taken and you'll fall hard

That presenter; one does not simply tell Shioda sensei that his techniques work only thanks to his opponents being obedient.

His nikyou is awesome.

🤨 imaginen entrenar tanto tiempo para aprender algo tan inútil 🙄
so… Aikido actually works…
+kepaluri Yes, when you don't use it. He shows a lot of jedi stuff but take the guy down with a strike to the chin.
as someone who fought aikidokas and trained the art itself i can confirm that it works. and its really effective.
