Here's something. DVD's. PROS: Digital Video and Audio quality and slue of bonus material. CONS: The discs fuck up so easily. Even if you take good care of it, it'll still get scratched and start skipping after watching it a lot. This isn't so much a DVD only issue as its an issue with CD technology as a whole. Thank God for Blu-Ray.
I always build my own computers. Just replace the fans when they die and it will last as long as you need it to. I have never made a computer that have died on me yet. I usually build a new pc every 5 to 7 years just to keep up with my games. To keep the prices for components down I like to buy them when their price have stopped dropping. You should try it for your next one, tons of good tutorials on how to pick good components and how to assemble. Cheaper to :)
What about cars? Older cars are more heavy duty and more likely to survive some wrecks vs a 2016 or 2017 model. This is because the newer cars have a bigger plastic to metal ratio and the plastic they use today is thinner or weaker grade. Older cars have more metal in their frame and can better withstand some beat up.
well, the weaker materials are part of a safety feature. the metal crumples in certain areas to absorb the impact, killing the car but not the passengers
Same thing happened to my parents. In less than five years their washer stopped working right. They even hired a repair man, who came by the house three times to fix it, but he finally told them they didn't have the parts because it was "outdated". Sickening. >}
My Samsung 55" LED tv, Samsung dryer and GE profile fridge have all failed. All failed after the warranty expired. I fixed all of them for a fraction of the cost of a new one. I fixed each one myself. The tv cost me about $50 for a replacement power board. The fridge was $100 for the main board. The dryer was only $15 for a thermostat. They have all been running great for years since the repairs. I refuse to blow thousands of dollars on new ones. There is a reason they say "they don't make them like they use to." The funny thing is that with the internet, a few simple searches will help diagnose the issue and/or find the part needed. The problem is most folks don't have the time, patience or ability. The sad thing is that most folks these days couldn't even change a tire if they had to. Don't throw away your money on a new one if you can help it and don't trust the "repair guy". As far as computers go. I built my own PC because screw those cookie cutter PC companies. They are all garbage within a year or two. I choose my hardware and software not them.
We came back from holidays 2 weeks ago and our whirlpool fridge died on us when we were gone (its 12 years old). When we came back there was a HORRIBLE smell coming from the fridge. We looked at the floor and there was red stuff and MAGGOTS on the floor. when we opened the freezer side there where maggots inside. I think the fridge tripped a fuze because there was plenty of credit left on our prepay machine for the electricity. It was off for obviously almost the whole 4 weeks we were gone. We got a repair man to come out and he said it was dead. We have another smaller fridge and freezer that are 20 years old. the brand is "hot point ice diamond". The freezer still worked but the fridge needed a thermostat. So the repair man installed one for us. We are using that tiny fridge and freezer now. We had insurance on the fridge that only cost a couple of hundred euro, they are giving us €1950 for the fridge. So we may as well buy a new one.
@@Rr0gu3_5uture What does IBM have to do with x86 pcs? They don't even fab any pc hardware any more. Theyre basically a service company these days. Last interesting thing they did was the ppc and power isas, which ironically are actually competitors to x86/x86-64. Which begs the question, seeing as IBM don't make or design pcs anymore other than servers, what exactly *did* you do at IBM? (rhetorical). :-)
@Philip Turner 60's & 70's had some awesome cars...and made of metal vs. the plastic & aluminum crap that cars today are made of. Plus that, things just worked better and longer in general back then. Today...not so good. If they would build things to work and last as well as they did back then, this video wouldn't exist. There would certainly be a lot less dead appliances, electronics and cars in this world too. I've seen enough to know what I am talking about.
Samsung puts heat sensitive capacitors next to heat sinks so they die after about a year. Solution is a $5 high temperature capacitor that they should have used... but intentionally didn't. And CFL bulbs are the worst. They're an environmental disaster
Lets not forget how flat out wasteful people are. Regardless of a products durability, people buy new and throw out the old, because they are programmed and indoctrinated to do so.
As much as I love my old cars, Modern cars actually do last longer. In the 50s,60s,70s a car had either wore out at 100,000 miles or rusted out by 10 years old. A 1950s car on the street in the 1970s was a somewhat rare treat, But today seeing a 1990s with 200,000 miles car is common.
You are right about the engine mileage. But you are dead wrong about the mechanical parts. Those components that would last for 10K, 20K or even 50K like tie rods, brakes, bearings, etc. all seem to have a service life of 2-3 years now, regardless of mileage, some going bad in as few as 5K of service. Those 1990s cars you talk about weren't as bad as the crap they are producing now. Especially for rust. In the 1990s they were apparently doing things to body panels that protected the unpainted areas much better -- or maybe they were designed with less exposure. Every car I have owned in the past 10 years has had rust bubbles around the ridge of the hood or the bottom of the door after 5 years. Paint is intact, but the doors and hood are rusting from the inside out. Not really noticeable at first, and by the time it's an issue, you think, well, I'm due for a new car anyway. You trade it in and the dealer sends it down to Mexico where rust isn't an issue.
I work in an auto shop and I have never seen rust on a new car excluding cases of damaged paint. Cars are powder coated now which leaves nowhere for rust to from. I have to ask what brand do you drive and why haven't you changed? Also, brakes don't last as long because cars are heavier and 4 wheel disk brakes is standard.
Look at the weight of a modern Dodge Challenger Vs. one from the '70's, and yes it is heavier. It is also heavier than '60's muscle cars- yes for good reason, safety and content. Most '60's muscle cars did not have A/C. None had air bags, nor proper "crumple" zones". "A" pillars, must now support 5 times the weight of a vehicle in the event of a rollover. And my GMC SUV from 2002 has 250,000 miles. Waxed it yesterday. Still looks and runs nearly as new. My Maytag fridge is going to be 25 years old this fall. Most of this video is based on the concept that "My problems aren't my fault". Be a smart consumer, recognize the difference between "Need" and "Want". And sadly, yes, there are some scams out there to be wary of. Been that way since forever.
In my country it was a fairly common sight to see 50s and 60s cars until the early/mid 90s when most started going off the road, 70s cars still dominated the road, here's heaps of photos showing a the streets in my country in 1992 www.flickriver.com/photos/travelling--light/sets/72157624758199920/
They don't build them to fail, they build them cheaply so everyone can afford them. There are still fridges and washing machines etc that will last much longer than the cheap ones, but they cost thousands not hundreds. When the only ones available cost 6-12 months wages very few people could afford them.
Why do we tolerate this crap? Doesn't this kind of deliberate sub-standard manufacture constitute an infringement of trading standards. Its one thing for something to break down but its another for manufacturers to openly admit they make products designed to force you to rebuy.
It is easy to manipulate stupid people. If I am goin to buy something I will buy it to last a lot. Lot of good quality brands don't use much advertising.
They don't actually force you to re-purchase.... they force you to re-think your next purchase !! I for one, will not purchase another GM car....crooks !
I heard this happens in the food industry as well. Soda that makes you thirsty, food that makes you hungry and snacks that make you crave more. Ever wonder why all manufacturers stopped allowing removable batteries?
I've owned 2 different Canon Pixma's through the years, and like you said, the stores stop carrying the ink when the latest printers no longer use them. However, I can STILL get ink for those printers on Amazon & Ebay. Just always keep a spare of each tank. When you install it into the printer, order another so you have another one on hand when the current one goes empty.
I had a very expensive large format Epson printed around 2009-10. Did excellent prints, but the damn thing had like 8 ink colors to manage and each one had a teeny tiny cartridge that cost 25 bucks a pop. You got maybe 6 full prints out of the machine before something went dry...and then the fun began. Because if the printer didn't like the new ink cartridge you put it, it flat out rejected it. I wasted well over $150 bucks on failed cartridges. When I contacted Epson about the issue, they said it was because of counterfeit ink cartridges being sold as Epson brand. Except I had bought the cartridges for Epson's own website! The real kicker was that every time you put in a new cartridge, the printer ran a bunch of "calibrations" that used a ton of ink (5% or more of each color). So if you put in a "bad" cart, it ran the tests, spat it out, you go get another cart, it runs the tests again, decides it's good, but OH LOOK! Another ink color is now dry! Restart the whole process of getting a bad cartridge and using tons of ink. Eventually I chunked it over a fence into my local dump drop-off. It made a satisfying crunch when it landed. I've yet to own a printer since.
Apple is going out of their way to sue repair shops that are actually able to repair their crappy engineering fails, going as far as to claim one guy was converting Mac Books to PCs by repairing them, and misrepresenting to the customer that they are getting a Mac back, saying that the repair converted it to a PC.
My parent's microwave lasted 30 odd years. And the food processor much the same. But they each cost about a months pay, not a couple of hours pay. The vacuum cleaner is still running. The same model - a Tellus gm80 - sells for $800ish. You crap you get crap. Our first inkjet - 300 dpi greyscale - cost $1500. It ran for ever, and when it broke down once, after years, hp fixed it without a question or needing proof of purchase. For free. Pay $50, what do you expect?
Number six isn't entirely true. The centennial light bulb was on for a hundred years, but if they turned it off, the filament would break because right now, it's hot, but if it were to cool down too quickly, it would snap (think about how pouring hot water n glasses can break them). This is also why light bulbs go out when you turn them on or off. The centennial light bulb isn't "proof that filament lights can last forever", but that turning them on and off ruins them.
Similar with computers. Heating and cooling from turning them on and off puts a strain on all those delicate circuits. Mine runs 24/7, and I just turn the monitor off. I only turn the CPU off for cleaning out dust every so often, and the occasional thunderstorm. My machines rarely if ever fail before I require a natural power upgrade, every 5-6 years.
You're correct about turning them on and off, but what you said about the Centennial bulb is not true. I live about 500 yards from the firehouse where the bulb lives and have seen it really often (usually when visitors come by). The bulb has been turned off many times in its life, most frequently during WWII blackouts. It's been moved four times to new fire stations and a couple of years ago the contacts in the 115 year old socket decided to stop conducting and the bulb went out. Panic ensued for a few minutes until they jiggled the switch and it came back on. The reason it's lasted so long is that the filament is pure carbon and 1mm thick. The resistance is so high that it never gets hot enough to outgas and has very little "sputtering" (the process where atoms of a material jump off of a heated surface and onto a cold one, which is why incandescent bulbs turn black inside).
That bulb is running on a dedicated power supply, a voltage low enough to just barely light it. It should run for another hundred years like this. I think it was off for a few minutes in the 70's when they moved it to their new firehouse.
THIS IS OUR BEST PHONE YET! And even better, it doesn't have a charging outlet! You have to pay $100 more for this dock that your phone sits on to charge, cool right? Me: "um what if want to use it while charging" BUT wait there's more, we got rid of the volume and power buttons so now you just slide your finger over it and it performs it's respective task. Me: what is I accidentally brush my fingers across the volume or power button? Now priced at $900 with an extra $100 for the dock and another $100 for a protective case and another $70 bucks in taxes. *and in two years we'll make a new one with one different function for twice the price*
PianoManiac Not necessarily. I have a Dell Inspiron Mini that was my first laptop (and let’s just say I did not take the best care of it) and it has lasted for 9 years and still runs strong, granted that it won’t run windows 10 very well... I also have a Dell m1710 that has had the shit kicked out of it (not my own doing) and has large pieces of its shell broken off, but still runs strong 12 years later (even runs windows 10 with little issue). My current laptop of 5 years Asus G751JY (bought used for $500) runs great and plays AAA games on max settings and has no issues other than the battery needed replaced
I was in college 2003-2007 and textbooks were a horrible scam even then. Math books would release a new edition that changed nothing other than the example problems and solutions so that you weren't on the same track as the rest of the class. I bought a macroeconomics book for microeconomics. I didn't realize it until the course was half way through because most of the book was actually the same. Textbooks are a MASSIVE scam.
The whole college thing is a scam as well. Why waste gas to go to lectures you can see on the internet? Why doesn't the teacher stream their classes on twitch or such? Why isn't CLEP covered by in-state tuition? Why do we have to buy the textbooks in paper form, why not watch them on my tablet (which you can find on the internet, but only of the old versions).
Interesting video. Thanks! For the record, I bought an Avanti compact refrigerator for college back in 1979. It has been in constant use for 40 years and is still going strong!
Actually for get about "extending" the life of the computer. Installing Linux will make it run better on day one, making you less likely to tear your hair out wishing for a better one. My thinkpad with Win8 sat in the box for a year because every time I tried to "train" myself to use it, I ended up gnashing my teeth. Not just the usability, but the constant crashes and lags. On a whim I put Ubuntu 14.04 on it, and 8+ years later the thing is humming along so well that I still use it over the brand spanking new Win 10 machine that, surprise, is still sitting in the box. The big surprise was that the PC manufacturer, who was selling "Linux certified" laptops 8 years ago, has dropped Linux certification from nearly all it's models. Apparently they didn't like having happy customers who didn't upgrade every 2-3 years out of sheer frustration. I have Mate 16.xx installed on the new machine as a dual boot, but there are some hardware issues that frankly should have been worked out by Lenovo to make it reliable as a stand-alone Linux machine. But they have clearly cast their lot with the disposable machine camp.
Depending on what you use it for .Obviously if you're into modern gaming or even need to run more modern programs like video editing or 3D animation, an old PC is only going to go so far. Depending on what the PC is used for and the age, a SSD can help considerably though.
*Joaquín Frausto* unfortunately, emulation isn't a reliable solution. Some games run better than others, some don't run at all, some will work on 1 emulator while some only run on another emulator, etc. I still can't play _Bloody Roar 3_ for PS2 at a constant 60fps with any emulator, it doesn't even work well on a backward compatible PS3, and neither does _SSX 3_ for that matter.
Worked for a major small engine manufacturer, and we had an emergency teleconference with headquarters with all the engineers and management. The issue, one of our consumer line of lawn mower engines was lasting way too long. We discussed putting in cheaper parts, but finally settled on just reclassifying it as a commercial engine and charging a lot more money for it, and designing a new, less robust, consumer engine that wouldn't last as long. When products work for years, consumers don't replace them, we can't have that. So yeah, products are engineered to last as long as the warranty states, then they are supposed to fail, so you will buy a replacement. Failing before the warranty is the worst scenario, but lasting too long beyond the warranty is also a less than ideal scenario for a manufacturer that desires repeat sales. Think about that whenever someone talks about how much better things were made in the old days. We'd go out of business if every mower we sold lasted 10 or 20 years. Also, notice that the more expensive commercial line, doesn't necessarily cost more to manufacture. It's just a matter of how long they will last. If they last a long time, we have to charge more for them, because you won't be replacing them every 3-4 years like the consumer line of engines. So yeah, as an engineer, you can get in hot water with management if your design lasts too long.
Yeah, guess my long winded post is just in response to people that wax nostalgically about how well built things used to be, back in the day. It's not that we can't build long lasting products now, it's we aren't allowed to. Modern capitalism has made us into a disposable society. I mean, what is the goal of a manufacturer? Maximizing profits, or producing a well built, and long lasting product? We all know the answer to that one. You want to produce a product good enough to sell, but not so good that it doesn't need replacing.
+Bundy714: My parents have General Electric refrigerator from the 1980s. 20 years ago, some timing device (a mechanical thing) needed to be replaced. It is still running. The freezer, also from the 1980s, is still running. The washing machine, also from the 1980s, is still running. Another smaller washing machine + spin dryer from the 1980s made by Hoover. Motor died 2 years ago. I think it lasted about 30 years.
@@louistournas120 It just so happens that I'm in the market for a new refrigerator. In doing my research to figure out which one to buy, I read an article where they talked about the fact that refrigerators used to last about 20 years on average. But not anymore. They lamented that consolidation in the industry meant that despite there being many brands, there are really only 6 major manufacturers of refrigerators......and the bad news: The life expectancy is now down to 7 years. They even talked about a service technician class given by Samsung, and the techs asked the company rep why the reliability of their refrigerators is so bad. He replied, “…we only care about the first year, if we can get our fridges to work for one year we are good. After that it’s more business for you, the Service-Tech guys”. Check it out, it's a pretty depressing article: consumersane.com/most-reliable-refrigerator-brand/

My 2012 Lenovo IdeaPad U410 still works great, but the screen’s (plastic) mounting frame isn’t attached to the (metal) hinges anymore so the thin plastic border cover is what keeps it together, and the battery lasts like 2 hours. Performance-wise it’s decent, but it’s just being held together by a million hopes and prayers at this point. Will be getting a brand new model soon, so.
My GE Microwave is almost 14 years old and I use it several times a day - every day. Actually gonna miss it when it finally dies. Yes, I am sentimental.
You guys forgot vacuums. My dad has a stainless steel tristar vacuum that's over 30's years old once in a while it needs a part replaced but it works as good as it did day one. most vacuum are plastic now days and break easily.
Ill have to argue with you on the computer point. The only computers that are actually designed to fail are Apples...because Apple. If you have a PC, you should be fine running it to your hearts content. What makes a PC obsolete is the speed at which the technology improves. Hard drive sizes that were $150 7 years ago are now $30. And those drives themselves have been replaced by faster ones. Every year manufacturers are cramming more cores into a CPU and GPUs are speeding up to handle those graphics. Software is normally able to run at lower settings on older machines. But if you keep using the older machine, you do so understanding that you are using technology 50% slower than whats out there now and it can kill your productivity.
Oh is that the reason my MacBook from 2011 still runs fine on the latest software and still has another year of security support and can still go on a couple years after that while my gaming pc is already slowing down after 1 year I’m sorry to say but macs are designed to last longer than you think
Stop buying cheap earbuds like Skullcandy. That said, I wouldn't spend a ton on earbuds either since they're liable to get lost, smashed in pockets, etc. Headphones are different though, a nice pair can certainly be worth it.
A textbook can still hold the exact same information as a newer version, the difference is just the way it is explained. when it comes to math, science and chemistry the curriculum is basically the same every year.
They simply couldn't, because as bad as Vista was, it was still newer and XP just didn't have the capability to keep up. At least Microsoft extended XP support for quite a bit longer than intended, and barely two or so years before Vista's support was shut off last month.
Vista failed because the most of the manufacturers didn't make the software for Vista to work with their hardware before the launch. Microsoft made the mistake of just giving them the dev kits and expecting them to do what they should have for free
Sandra Weilbrenner hang on to it. I have a neighbor that has a gas refrigerator that was made in the 40’s. It is in her basement... still works! It came with the house!
the US car industry is a perfect example of an industry forced not to use planned obsolescence, when Japanese vehicles with longer lifespans entered the American market in the 1960s and 1970s, American carmakers were forced to respond by building more durable products.
They didn't build more durable products, they just kept seeing their market share in the important compact and midsize markets shrink, to the point they stopped competing in those segments. Even now, reliability stats for things like the Chevrolet Aveo/Spark, the Malibu, the Chrysler 200/Sebring and the Ford Focus and Fiesta are at the bottom of the list.

Windows 10 is a terrible disappointment! The Home version is terribly unstable. I finally got fed up with Windows 10 and I remounted my two computers with Linux (Ubuntu and CentOS). Ubuntu and CentOS are solider than Windows and they use fewer resources. And no virus or ransomware or spyware (because "malware" mainly attacks Windows and Microsoft products)
By my calculations, we'll reach the "iphone singularity" by the year 2030. At which point, your iphone will have become obsolete before its launch date.
Well guessing by how things are going now, I'd predict sooner. I literally *the only* edge that iPhones have over android phones are their speed and software updates, which only moderately help security while making the phone slow, stuttery, and buggy as fuck. Android phones still get laggy *really* quickly (coincidence?), but including gigabit LTE modems and bluetooth 5.0 (which aren't yet supported by most carriers and accessories, respectively) they at least make sure that the phone will be remain somewhat up to date as other consumer tech evolves.
The whole tv thing is a little out there, yes they are not easier to fix and they might not be more durable, but that because they are thinner with different technology. We could have more durable tv if we want to go back to the standard tube tv, it's like saying that we should go back to VHS because they are more durable even though they are completely inferior to optical discs in every other way.
DHGMRZ17 thank you I was thinking the same thing, we as consumers demand the newest tech but get angry when it doesn’t last.. we didn’t give them time to develop the tech properly
I have an old Zenith cabinet model crt tv in my basement that has a manufacturer date of June of 1975 stamped on the back. It was given to me in 2002 when I first moved out on my own, and even though it was old as hell back then I took it because it was free and it worked. It still works, and it works well. The thing is nearly 45 years old! Meanwhile the hd tv I bought in 2010 died in 2016.

The computer hardware/software example is not entirely true. Software compatability issues are on the people developing the software. Not the new OS or hardware producers. When a software developer has to take their newly-updated program (or brand new hotness) and make it work on older OS's, they need to do significant work in many cases to make their software work on the old machine. And it isn't a resources issue, normally. The old computers most likely have the RAM, storage, etc to make the programs work. The problem lies in syntax changes, changes to dll's used by all programs on an OS, and changes to how you interact with hardware. So your old computer may work just fine if the programmers want to make their program on them. However, they often need to change the major areas of code to be able to interact with it. That is not often cost effective. When the dwindling number of customers on an old OS cannot warrant the time and effort in reprogramming a version of an app that runs on the old OS's, then people won't bother. And again, that isn't the OS' fault necessarily. Operating systems provide many core libraries that programs reference in their code, and these libraries MUST be updated to handle changes in technology. At the same time, when you accommodate new technology, some of the old accommodations are entirely incompatible, and have to be phased out/omitted from future code bases.
Even if you want to keep compatibility with old OSes, some third-party library that your code depends on will drop support for them. Fortunately Microsoft OSes keep API compatibility for a long time, so if something works on Windows 8.1 API calls will work for Vista. Unlike Apple.
I speak from experience as someone who owns older Macs and has tried to keep them up-to-date with modern software, and I strongly disagree. Apple doesn't support their computers nearly as long as they should with the new MacOS. Recently in Mojave, they dropped support for a bunch of Mac models with pre-Metal GPUs - Quad-Core i7, 256 GB SATA III SSD (aftermarket), 16 GB DDR3 RAM (aftermarket), AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1 GB GDDR5 - does this sound like obsolete hardware to you? What's more, the OpenGL libraries are literally still included in the OS - simply disabled with the GPU kexts intentionally omitted - and some have had success getting Mojave to work with acceleration on unsupported hardware. Plus, Apple is doing the opposite and extending support on iOS, so they certainly could apply the same strategy to MacOS if they wanted to, and give Macs 10 years on a current OS. Whether or not you want to argue that it's done because it's cost-effective, planned obsolescence exists partly because it's more cost-effective to do that instead of putting effort toward lengthening the lifespan of products. And certainly with the rising costs of today's Macs, we should at least have the expectation that they will be supported for longer, right?
Fun fact from my grandpa, he have an old tube tv from around late 1978's i still use it (on my 8-bit project) even if it need some minor fix the tv died peacefully about a year ago (R.I.P my grandpa tv 1978-2018)
I try to get the cheap ones with hard plastic screens and put on a screen protector. Yeah, the phone is kinds slow (a slug really) but it does the job and the screen doesn't break at the first bump.
Brother printers are good. Every other printer manufacturer is just out to steal from you. Epson and Lexmark are the worst. They have even changed their designs to make it impossible to hook up after market continuous ink systems.

My fridge is a 1954 Hotpoint I saved from the local scrapyard. It just works and is at least as efficient as any modern fridge. Refrigerators became less efficient when "frost-free" became a thing -- the compressor has to spin about 4x as fast as older "icing" models.
Yes the red ring of death does suck but it is not due to planned obsolescence it is due to a design fault with the motherboard and the desire for Microsoft to rush the system out the door to beat the Wii and the PlayStation 3 to Market
I'm watching this on my 2007 21' iMac, in which I also Record my mixes on, Edit video and more. Haven't been able to update itunes or anything in over 5 years. Everything still works fine though. Oh!! Had to replace the keyboard 2 years ago.
The video game is not true. Newer consoles are much better, for the money. They have some reverse compatibility, but it can be hard to do. You can't make games for both generations easily because they have different libraries. And do on ...
The sad part is most people already know all about planned/built-in obsolescents. But most people are also either too busy or too self absorbed to care. And companies know this so they have no intention of going back to making quality products.
If it can't run the newer versions of Windows then the hardware is old enough to be almost entirely useless. I have an old HP workstation from around 2004, it can still run Windows 10. Granted, I would never ever do that because it runs drastically hotter than a modern machine and uses significantly more electricity than my modern PC despite being orders of magnitude slower. It as at times like that that upgrading can cost you money now... but save it in the long run.
Yeah, try Linux and see the latest version of the software you want to use be perpetually unavailable in the repositories. PS: Compiling apps or using rolling releases are for OS geeks.
Some points made in this video may be valid but a big reason why manufactured products like refrigerators have a shorter life span because people ask for cheaper products and cheaper products means cheaper materials. So when a manufacturer tries to cram as much functions as possible in a cheap device it is bound to have a short life span. I am sure pantyhose costed much more back then than they cost now. And the thing about smartphones and PC-s is just wrong you have no idea about the developing side of things and how no company could afford to keep supporting old devices when there is such a small number of users on them. Actually apple in this sense keeps software updating their phones the longest from all smartphone makers
8:04 What computer is that? (the orange and clear one). I remember when I was in elementary school, our computer lab was full of that exact computer, in orange, blue, and green.
They just hauled off our 1996 Plymouth Voyager that was our family van, then my car for 18 years. My moms "new" Honda Pilot is cool, but it aint no Plymouth Voyager, and I have a Samsung Galaxy S3, that thing is my baby and was accidentally run over by my Plymouth Voyager, works perfectly fine. You look at at your iPhone wrong and it practically explodes.
My 68 ford pick up still runs fine too and is built like a tank . Got rear ended by a Obama son other day he tried to hit and run the crash took out his radiator I chased his butt till he blew his engine the cops lost him on foot but he left his car with his wallet in it BUSTED !
I do use a flip phone (purchased a replacement for a previous flip phone last year). There was only one option that wasn't a smartphone, but after seeing the number of cracked screens that other people have had I like the protection that a flip phone offers for the screen (I've never had a cracked screen with either of my flip phones despite years of use).
I use a flip phone too, by choice because my last smart phone wouldn't even make a phone call. Kinda worthless. And it was a trend with every smart phone I had ever used. Where as my first phone, a flip phone, would probably still work today if I still owned it.
I don't need all that, I also don't need to pay for data, or constantly be distracted from the world around me by a device. If I want to be on the computer, I can do that, and not be tempted to do so when I'm out of my house living life. I don't see the text system on a smart phone as any easier to understand. Basically, I don't need my phone to do things my computer can do, that's what my computer is for.
I still have a flip phone for my kid. She broke it recently and I bought the same exact one on eBay. The carrier refused to activate it, saying it wasn't E911 compliant. I took apart the phone and cannibalized the parts to repair the original one. Turned it on and checked -- of course it IS compliant with E911. They will lie any way they can to get you to part with your money for overpriced disposable junk electronics!!
Yeah video games aren't designed to fail, with so many DLCs and new consoles without backward compatibility, they are designed to take more of your money! Not fail!
This is EXACTLY why I gave up on consoles after Sony removed the PS3's backward compatibility. I already paid for my PS1 & 2 games, why should I be forced to buy them again for PS3 & 4?! *Joaquín Frausto* I don't have to buy a whole new computer when a next gen game is released, just upgrade my RAM, CPU, or GPU, and I can still play my old copies of NFSU2 and AvP2. Downside is I'll never play the new GoW. F*** brand propriety.
same, I literally laugh in the face of anyone who spends the money on the new iphone x or even wants one..I read somewhere that it's the most fragile one yet, like it's not even a secret, and people will still buy it..
Why in the hell would you try to run Adobe on something that can't handle windows 10? Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit Hard disk space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver Display: 800x600
Bob G Because you can't upgrade them? That is at least the reason I can think of. I have been upgrading my PC for 15 years. The only original part left is the case, but that still counts, right?
Schwarzer Ritter i Have and android phone its the same shit they slow phone trough update i had android 5.1.1 could not upgrade to the new version so i install custom 6.1 in it now it faster than before i try the new 7.1 but my phone could not receive phonecall so i had to go back to 6.1 everything is better and faster better use of ressource and Samsung galaxy grand prime 3 years old i upgrade my os i can last another 2-3 years
technology productions 2017 its because updates are designed for new current models, not older models. When people with older iPhones, update their phones, it slows down because it isn't optimized for older models. If you have an older iPhone, don't update it.
1:36 to 2:30 I wanted to address what is said in this video starting with the Backwards Compatibility part. Not all Console Manufactures include Backwards Compatibility, however, most do. Take the Xbox 360, Xbox ONE, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo Switch (kinda) and the PC market as examples. The reason why new games can`t run on old consoles is because the game in question is made using a very powerful graphics engine for a release on some platforms. It would take a long time to convert a game that is on a powerful engine to a game on a lesser powerful engine. Even if it did run, it would put stress on the CPU and GPU of the system and it would make the game worse. Also, old games and consoles are not automatically considered obsolete. There will be people who will play CoD:WaW and that was released in the 2000`s. Also, Steam has made it extremely easy to play some old games that have been released in the 80`s/90`s/00`s for the PC gamer! Activision wants people to continue to play the old CoDs as well as the new; that's why the CoD:WaW servers have never been shut down.
I bought a Goldstar Brand microwave oven in 1984- 34 years later it works just as good. I use it daily. The company out of business.......product still working!!!
Hell yeah! I still got my original Dreamcast. It's modded so I can play all the games from an external drive. Power Stone 2 was my favorite game back in the day.
Dreamcast is awesome, mine still works minus needed a new part for the controller ports. It was better than the Xbox 360 which everyone I knew had one red-ring at some point for the older models. Meanwhile I have an Atari 2600 that works perfect even to this day. But the major problem with the Dreamcast and especially any CD based system is going to be disc rot.
Thomas Shelleby is it a lie though? as I understand it, they use low rated diodes that burn out faster so the TV fails shortly after the warrantee period
when I was a kid we had the first color TV in the area it was all tubes My father would take them out go to the hardware store they had a tube tester and sold new tubes I think that TV lasted like 20 years !!
Gradually they became more integrated to save space, weight, and manufacturing costs to offer them at a cheaper price, and thus they became harder to repair. So it's not solely because of planned obsolescence, but that could've played a factor as well.
MrPleers, the only issue is that the transmission converter don't fit TV's that old. There is also the issue that many places cannot get the reception anyway. It is unfortunate because those "antique" televisions will work for many more decades.
Hippy Treehugger Vulkan isn't locked to Windows 10. DX12 is locked to Windows 10 because it's Microsoft's API and they want people to upgrade their OS.
Beretuzerpk Can't most early D11 games be run on a dx10 card? And dx10/11 both needed the same os (Vista or higher to run). As for dx12, as long as a segnificantly amount of people own pre-Windows 10 OS's, they will still make the game DX11 compatible. Except for Halo Wars 2 and Gears, all new games to my knowledge still have DX11 support.
I agree with the cellphones (cough cough IPhone 7 cough), I never understood the 'Necessity' to buy a new phone every year just because there's 'new features' (cough no headphone Jack cough) it really puts the stupidity of consumers into perspective especially if they ALWAYS buy the 'new model' or 'new variant' (cough IPhone 6s cough). Sorry about that my normal smartphone must have cought a virous or something because it keeps coughing.
SpaceCowboy I can't afford an IPhone & I don't see what the huge deal is with getting new variants & models when you can simply wait. I know people who go & buy the new IPhones when they come out & I've tried to find the difference between the IPhone 6 (original) vs the 'new variant' (mainly the 6s) & the difference is VERY underwhelming. OOH I can now have a slightly better camera, & oh my god would you look at that SLIGHTLY better image quality & Holly SHIT I can now drop my phone in 6 inches of water instead of 4!? 😳
Austin Bennett I agree dude. But iSheep will fight tooth and nail to defend the obvious fact that they're just buying the brand and image, not the actual phone.
SpaceCowboy exactly. I get annoyed with IPhone elitist because Android & other companies can (and do) make thing just as good if not better in some cases. I'll admit that Apple has innovative ideas but overall Apple puts the I in Idiot. I literally see no reason to get an IPhone because you get polished shit that's supposed to be refined yet restricts access to basic services that every phone now has: ITunes, Apple store & worst of all Apple maps.
Austin Bennett you're definitely right about that. When I got my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 back in 2012, iSheep would always be quick to say something stupid like "Do you carry your flatscreen TV everywhere or you go?" or "wow, why would you want a phone with that big of a screen" but when Apple comes out with the iPhone 6 plus, 2 YEARS LATER, all of a sudden it becomes "wow, Apple is so innovative for making a phone with a larger screen so I can watch porn more comfortably!". That just made it so much more clear to me that most people that buy that crap are idiots. Or iDiots to be more polite.
I've been using a Windows XP 7, and everything runs fine. Sure it's slow as hell and you can't necessarily use any latest tech, but it gets the job done well. Plus, it's at least 10 years old, so it's a beast compared to newer models when covering lifespan.

"Forcing gamers to buy the new console to play the latest game" Damn you console peasants,PC master race baby!
Also, planned obsolescence for cars does not affect car guys, like myself.Because we believe in BUILT,NOT BOUGHT!
+ dont buy pre built PCs,they suck.
"nearly as expensive as a computer" they say, lol iPhones are more expensive than most people's computers
I bought my computer for 550$ 3 years ago ant it works perfectly now. Only upgraded the RAM and graphics card.
yep hell my laptop was 400 even with tax and s**t if you want a decent non flip phone its easily twice that or more even android thats what i use
Beacuase iphones are overpriced and are shit compared to many android phones when it comes to price and performance.
Not more expensive than Apple computers :-)
for the current price of an iphone xs max ($1100 dollars us) i can build a decent gaming pc with some upgradability included
My washer and dryer were made in the 80's and are still running perfectly. My brother-in-law had to replace his Samsung washer twice in 10 years.
yeah they don't make em like they used to.
I just want to sue them for Money theft as that should be a crime
What about cars? Older cars are more heavy duty and more likely to survive some wrecks vs a 2016 or 2017 model. This is because the newer cars have a bigger plastic to metal ratio and the plastic they use today is thinner or weaker grade. Older cars have more metal in their frame and can better withstand some beat up.
well, the weaker materials are part of a safety feature. the metal crumples in certain areas to absorb the impact, killing the car but not the passengers
Same thing happened to my parents. In less than five years their washer stopped working right. They even hired a repair man, who came by the house three times to fix it, but he finally told them they didn't have the parts because it was "outdated". Sickening. >}
who makes it?
They're an environmental disaster
so basically ur a real man? a rarity now
And people wonder why the landfills are overflowing
and china getting rich
Landfills are the main cause of pollution so yeah
Lets not forget how flat out wasteful people are. Regardless of a products durability, people buy new and throw out the old, because they are programmed and indoctrinated to do so.
Work, buy, consume, repeat, die.
this 100%
As much as I love my old cars, Modern cars actually do last longer.
Are you saying that cars are heavier now? than when? cirtainly not heavier than 50's and 60's cars.(for good reason)
In my country it was a fairly common sight to see 50s and 60s cars until the early/mid 90s when most started going off the road, 70s cars still dominated the road, here's heaps of photos showing a the streets in my country in 1992 www.flickriver.com/photos/travelling--light/sets/72157624758199920/
im sorry but if you build something to fail it should be illegal
They don't build them to fail, they build them cheaply so everyone can afford them. There are still fridges and washing machines etc that will last much longer than the cheap ones, but they cost thousands not hundreds. When the only ones available cost 6-12 months wages very few people could afford them.
PS. I agree with you that it should be illegal, I just don't agree that it's happening :)
Dude, the video showed a documentary and proof that it's happening for almost 100 years.
Nothing is perfect
the big corporations pay off the politicians so they get away with it .
Karlo Tvrtko I find the more it's advertised movies and tv shows included the more they suck
James Brindle Because people are incredibly gullible and don't put much thought into the future, they're only concerned with the current time.
They don't actually force you to re-purchase.... they force you to re-think your next purchase !! I for one, will not purchase another GM car....crooks !

- Capitalism
- People love capitalism
This is why I never buy anything Apple.
Ohhhhhhh!!!!! THAT'S MY BOIIIIII
lyle gentleman no, it doesn't dumbass
The Huawei will be cheaper to replace than Apple...
and yet apple products last longer than the alternative
Watch out of them apple fanboys
I heard this happens in the food industry as well. Soda that makes you thirsty, food that makes you hungry and snacks that make you crave more. Ever wonder why all manufacturers stopped allowing removable batteries?

@@@RebeccaFarquharson hmm... hashtag no privacy cause "smart" devices spy on us all day long? ...oh, hi Alexa!
This is why I quit trying to keep current 20 years ago.
The worst thing about home printers is that even if the kill switch doesn't work, store don't sell the ink for it after its a year old!
Laser printers make much more sense fiscally.
I can still get ink for my old HP inkjet printer no problem, though I'd rather the cheaper refill option whenever possible.
@@michaeldougherty6036 geez that's lame

" its not just Apple, various PC makers have been criticized for using cheaper parts"
but mostly apple
Stop the genocide against fridges, they aren't even allowed to live past puberty! #FridgeLivesMatter

OMG hahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah also people don't know that turning them on and off exposes them to a minuscule serge of power that adds up over time.
That bulb is running on a dedicated power supply, a voltage low enough to just barely light it. It should run for another hundred years like this. I think it was off for a few minutes in the 70's when they moved it to their new firehouse.
Rooted my phone so no updates. Still running fast as the day I got it.

I have a car older than me. And it still runs perfectly.
Love that lil car
You can actually extend the usefulness of an old computer if you install a Linux distro on it.
cfltheman which explains the ancient registers at my job.
Or use it as a retro pc gaming machine for games from its era. Thats what I use dos, windows 98, and xp machines for.
I don't understand what the know distro means. I only know English.

The video game thing can be solved with a PC. It doesn't even have to be high quality

Punjabi but you have the problem game with conten cut for dlc
Doom 1 and Doom 2 as well. Most of the games I play are from the early 2000s or late 1990s, if not before that. lol
@Kevin Matta
virus only occurs if the user (in this case you) don't have common sense

My parents have General Electric refrigerator from the 1980s.
I think it lasted about 30 years.
my john deere is over 10 years old :)
Check it out, it's a pretty depressing article: consumersane.com/most-reliable-refrigerator-brand/

my computer has been used 8 years now and it still works great
Phaniss my computer has Been used 11 years, just got an ssd And i think i'll last another 11 till it get's too slow, it's an hp Pavilion elite m9150la, everything stock except the ssd, also my xbox 360 fat lasted till last year, i bought titanfall when Blockbuster was closing And 2 weeks later the game melted my cpu.
My Grandma's fridge is about 40 years old
good for her :)
The Shawoosh you mean the crt age?
Mines 65.

I would like to buy that fridge. I'll give you 30$.
My grandma had a washing machine that lasted over 30 years, sadly it broke for good 2 years ago but she used that washing machine since the mid 80's.
You guys forgot vacuums. My dad has a stainless steel tristar vacuum that's over 30's years old once in a while it needs a part replaced but it works as good as it did day one. most vacuum are plastic now days and break easily.
i bought a dyson about 5 years ago, its still runs very well !
In the end you can find that planned obselence almost everywhere. The list would ahve to be faaaaaar longer if they wanted that.
dyson the best my vac 2010 --> 2017
Depends on how you use them. My parents vacuum is as old as their marriage at 47 years. It's plastic as well.

All apples I’ve seen last way longer than pc
Oh is that the reason my MacBook from 2011 still runs fine on the latest software and still has another year of security support and can still go on a couple years after that while my gaming pc is already slowing down after 1 year I’m sorry to say but macs are designed to last longer than you think
EVERY THING THAT IS MADE TODAY IS MADE TO FUNCTION JUST BEYOND THE WARRANTY.
CFLs need to be on the list they used to last for years but now they often fail; after just six months.
I think that would fall under “lightbulbs” #6
Question: How did headphones and earbuds not make this list?
Kohaku Kitsune Exactly. I spend 20 on them shits and they stop playing sound after a month
my AKG headphones still work like new after 12 years.. but they did come at a hefty price
Stop buying cheap earbuds like Skullcandy. That said, I wouldn't spend a ton on earbuds either since they're liable to get lost, smashed in pockets, etc. Headphones are different though, a nice pair can certainly be worth it.
Malus1531 I have a couple pairs of headphones. Both broken...
+Kohaku Kitsune Did you spend a decent amount and choose a reputable brand?
A textbook can still hold the exact same information as a newer version, the difference is just the way it is explained. when it comes to math, science and chemistry the curriculum is basically the same every year.
i ve been growing up with the same refrigerator FOR 21 YEARS!!!
still working.
And i grow up with my tv, no one remember when we buy it so it reach 30 in 1 or 4 years...and our dishwasher runs 35 years...
I do not know how old my fridge is, I got it used 18 years ago.
To be honest, if it is running for 17 years constantly. It will probably break...
I have an old russian tv from 1974 and it still works perfectly.
good list, but what about windows vista?
Doesn't that fall under the Computers category?
Vista was essentially a heavily-bugged and unfinished Windows 7.
at least this one in particular... compare it to windows 3.1, and 3.1 was waaay better and last longer...! XP too... 8

The dollar is obsolete.
the US car industry is a perfect example of an industry forced not to use planned obsolescence, when Japanese vehicles with longer lifespans entered the American market in the 1960s and 1970s, American carmakers were forced to respond by building more durable products.

By my calculations, we'll reach the "iphone singularity" by the year 2030. At which point, your iphone will have become obsolete before its launch date.
What a paradox.
I thought we were already there.....
manifestgtr i mean, compared to some Android phones, they already are
Ba-zingggggg
Well guessing by how things are going now, I'd predict sooner. I literally *the only* edge that iPhones have over android phones are their speed and software updates, which only moderately help security while making the phone slow, stuttery, and buggy as fuck. Android phones still get laggy *really* quickly (coincidence?), but including gigabit LTE modems and bluetooth 5.0 (which aren't yet supported by most carriers and accessories, respectively) they at least make sure that the phone will be remain somewhat up to date as other consumer tech evolves.
My dad bought my mom a microwave for Christmas a few months before I was born. It'll be 36 this year and it's still going strong!
Tech does not need that much time, you either use things that will last, or you make things that will break and get more money

Ron Ronson Now that's how you clear up those blaming Apple like it's their easy excuse out of this.
TALKING ABOUT PHONES. I TELL YA.. Those freakin SCREENS are designed to break EASY.
Gilbert Arciniega because new phones suck. SUPREME RULER NOKIA
Until I bough the 5se I was constantly breaking screens ... I think I finally found the Nokia brick of the Apple world ....
I try to get the cheap ones with hard plastic screens and put on a screen protector. Yeah, the phone is kinds slow (a slug really) but it does the job and the screen doesn't break at the first bump.
I have never broken a screen. I never bought an Apple phone, though.

My fridge is a 1954 Hotpoint I saved from the local scrapyard. It just works and is at least as efficient as any modern fridge. Refrigerators became less efficient when "frost-free" became a thing -- the compressor has to spin about 4x as fast as older "icing" models.
what about Xbox 360, it does that red ring of death so many times
rrod's suck
Yes the red ring of death does suck but it is not due to planned obsolescence it is due to a design fault with the motherboard and the desire for Microsoft to rush the system out the door to beat the Wii and the PlayStation 3 to Market
My playstation's never had that problem😉
My 360 from 2005 still works fine.
That’s a rushed attempt for Microsoft to make their consoles be the first systems out the door on launch day so they can have better sales

The sad part is most people already know all about planned/built-in obsolescents. But most people are also either too busy or too self absorbed to care. And companies know this so they have no intention of going back to making quality products.
If computer is unable to run newer Windows versions due to oldness, try Linux. Computer will work lke it would be new.
It as at times like that that upgrading can cost you money now... but save it in the long run.
win-drone

Buy vintage type writers, and use a flip phone.
Texting is just as fast for me on a flip as a smart phone, just takes adjusting. Thanks for the suggestion.
Almost all of my kitchen appliances are pre 1960, and work perfectly! Best of all, I got them at yard sales for a buck or two!

You get the option to upgrade every few years, but removing old parts is difficult.
I like how they only showed iPhones
because they are by far the worst offenders.
they are the worst when it comes to planned obsolescence
technology productions 2017 its because updates are designed for new current models, not older models. When people with older iPhones, update their phones, it slows down because it isn't optimized for older models. If you have an older iPhone, don't update it.
People who get new iPhones every year and frequently buy new Apple computers are absolutely brainwashed.
Brainwashed? Nah, they're just idiots. You don't even have to bother with brainwashing when you have idiots all around the world.
1:36 to 2:30
I wanted to address what is said in this video starting with the Backwards Compatibility part.
Like 90% of this could be Apple Products.
Android devices*
pc does not have the same problems as consoles, backwards compatibility is there, cross compatilitblity, and emulators
Even a PC you need to eventually upgrade, but yeah video games shouldn't be on list.
MistaTofMaine: Only if you want the new features offered by the upgraded system.
I bought a Goldstar Brand microwave oven in 1984- 34 years later it works just as good. I use it daily. The company out of business.......product still working!!!
F that man, Dreamcast was Awesome
it was the opposite of designed to fail they wanted a final great console to go out with
Hell yeah! I still got my original Dreamcast. It's modded so I can play all the games from an external drive. Power Stone 2 was my favorite game back in the day.
I have 3 dreamcasts, the only one i have ever had a problem with had a drive that was made in china, look for the japanese drives.
The community is so damn dedicated that even the disc drive wont stop the think for living centuries, we have SD reader drives after all.
The modern television is actually made better than the older one, however more advanced tech is more difficult to repair. Nice lie though.
I have a television from the 1950's that still works.
MrPleers, the only issue is that the transmission converter don't fit TV's that old. There is also the issue that many places cannot get the reception anyway.
It is unfortunate because those "antique" televisions will work for many more decades.
Direct X 12 is a damn good example. DX9,10 and 11 can be used on widows xp....so windows 10 locks DX 12 and vulkan to windows 10 which is bs...
Hippy Treehugger Vulkan isn't locked to Windows 10.
DX12 is locked to Windows 10 because it's Microsoft's API and they want people to upgrade their OS.
Hippy Treehugger vulkan can work on android
Since when can XP use DX10/11?
Beretuzerpk Can't most early D11 games be run on a dx10 card? And dx10/11 both needed the same os (Vista or higher to run).
As for dx12, as long as a segnificantly amount of people own pre-Windows 10 OS's, they will still make the game DX11 compatible. Except for Halo Wars 2 and Gears, all new games to my knowledge still have DX11 support.
Microsfoft locked DX12 to windows 10
I agree with the cellphones (cough cough IPhone 7 cough), I never understood the 'Necessity' to buy a new phone every year just because there's 'new features' (cough no headphone Jack cough) it really puts the stupidity of consumers into perspective especially if they ALWAYS buy the 'new model' or 'new variant' (cough IPhone 6s cough). Sorry about that my normal smartphone must have cought a virous or something because it keeps coughing.
Austin Bennett watch out dude, you'll wake up the butthurt iSheep
Subconcious Rift noob. I'm running Windows 98
Haven't watched the video yet. Guessing Obamacare's not on the list
