  • I watched this on Mike Peace’s channel (love his channel) link below. I also read the article that Jonh Lucas did in the AAW in November of 2022. Another great reason to be an American Association of Woodturners member. Mikes video was good and his second one on decorating them was better, but I did have to do some figuring to make it work. After showing mine to my fellow club members at Northeast Florida Woodturner Assoc monthly meeting, several folks ask me questions and I did do an instruction sheet, but I quickly change that and decided to make a video on how I do it. It is fun and I know when I go to make them again next year I won’t remember what I did and I like making videos. So, thanks Mike Peace, John Lucas and my fellow club members for inspiring me.

    Resources
D-Way, 1 ¼ -8, Mandrel (not on their site have to ask Jimmy) It the aluminum piece with treaded rod on it., great for jam chuck and waste blocks. With the brass insert you can remove the pieces and it goes back on in the same exact place, not more trueing up after you remove it from the lathe. The inserts in the glue blocks are 3/8 x 16 thread. (no I don’t work for D-way LOL)
    And their Beading tools 1/8 & 3/8
Sanding rods made of dowel with Velcro

I use it all the time in my shop to make sanding pads

This looks fantastic. If you had a laser engraver, or could get in touch with someone who had one, I could easily see a set of four laser-cut inserts at 1" circles to go into each of the four side holes. This could serve as small customization, either for the holidays or with initials for weddings, or add a piece of colored film inside to change the lantern's color.

There is a ton of option with this design.

Enjoyed the video! Picked up a few tips I will use from now on. The threaded insert on the jamb chuck is a great idea! Thanks!

I can’t take credit for the threaded insert; I saw Jimmy Allen (cool dude) of D-Way tools do that in a club demo and it prompted me to buy his mandrel he used from him. They do not list it on their website, you need to email them (Jimmy) if you want one. They are about $75 and comes with two blocks with inserts already installed. I have found the brass inserts on Niles bottle stopper site for about a buck and they work too. But what a brilliant idea. Oh and thanks for watching

Thanks for watching and they are fun to make, the more I make the better I get the more creative I get. Every time I gift one I end up having to make another one. You cant do just one.

sorry for the late replay, I got the mandrel from D-Ways tools. It is not on their site but if you contact them and ask JImmy he will sell you one. It was about $75 if I remember right.

I usually look right after Christmas at the big box stores (lowes, home depot they are the cheapes although I have found them in Michaels and holly lobby). The ones I used in this one I collected over the last couple of years. If you go to amazon and search for tea lights 1.4”, they are close and all you have to do is hit it with a box scraper and take a little off the sides. In fact, that would be a more accurate way to size the candles. All the ones I have looked at are straight side.
