Hello, I cant use subd tool properly, after creating the object 18:28 and choosing subd tool it either dissapears, does nothing, or creates a lot of separate objects, I dont know why, even tho I join it. Can you help me?
Make sure that your geometry is quad based, meaning - all polygons have 4 sides. Also before converting to subd, I'd run a cleanup command called "alignmeshvertices" or "alignvertices" dont remember. This will remove all duplicate points
It's my pleasure! By the way, this tutorial is for Rhino 6 users, if you have Rhino 7, I'd suggest watching either my SubD Architecture or SubD Car design livestream series. Much more available tools for geometries like this in Rh7~
Hello, Thanks for tutorial. In building, I tried to use SubD, but it's not working. It model is getting disappear (in Rhino 7), do you know what could be the problem?
thanks Gediminas, nice tutorial.. when you mention that it is easier to work the meshes in Blender, do you mean that it would be easier to build the topology in blender then bring into Rhino for subd? or just easier to do the whole thing in blender? thanks :)
Yes, exactly - you'd build the quad topology in blender - import the quads into Rhino and use SubD on it. Blender has really strong tools for mesh editing such as "add mesh loop" - where it adds an additional edge around the whole mesh. Really speeds up the process.
@@DesignGoBrr Of course. Reason I asked, is that I often see these creation, (Rhino) but not often how you go from the design more to the preparation of the piece for manufacturing. I work at a woodworking shop (we have 1 3xis cnc, and one 5axis) and being new to Rhino, I often struggle how to get designs to fit into the workflow. One often need to use several softwares to get the ideas onto a CNC. I understand that my questions are beyond the scope of these tutorials (which we all are very grateful for)
@@cango5679 With a 3 axis cnc you'd need to partition this kind of design into at least 4 pieces (if I'm not mistaken) and have RAPID/GCodes ready for every side of those 4 pieces. So it's 6x4=24 milling operations in total and then a bit of manual work with registration setting/glueing. If you had a Rotating table (5 axis CNC) , then suddenly this would become much more streamlined (while the setup of course would become much much more difficult). I tried doing some cnc tutorials before, but it seems like people aren't really interested in them unfortunately.
How can I use the command tosubd if I don't use a cuboid as a mesh but a "normal" one? Can objects that have no mesh be converted into subdivision at a later date?
SubD geometry requires a "cage" , which is usually a quad mesh. If you were to try using a nurbs polysurface to do the same thing, rhino would just get confused.
@@DesignGoBrr many thanks! if I use a box mesh and stack it one on top of the other and use the subdivision command, the surfaces are shown strangely round and separated. can you help me with that?
Hi there, Rhino6 doesn't support SubD, except for a few commands such as _ToSubD and _ToNurbs . I'd suggest getting the 90 day evaluation of Rhino 7 to learn it :)
Hey man - I was following along with this tutorial and out of nowhere my ToSubD command stopped working. When I input the command now it sometimes deletes the mesh entirely or other times nothing happens at all. Any idea why this might be happening?
@@proboscidean this is super weird.. but you shouldn't need to use ToSubD anymore if youre using Rhino 7. Check out my sci-fi car workflow or subd architecture workflow series - those show the correct subd workflow in rh7 (this one is for rh6)

Hello, Thank you for this, a question that pops up on mind is that do we can use weave bird subdivision through grasshopper and put it beside our original mesh object, so that as well as make a change on our basic mesh we can see the result on the subdivide version instantly, thank you again
Yes, absolutely you can - I believe Catmul Clark subdivision would show you the most accurate result. That is indeed a good way of how to get an inmmediate preview of what you're doing!
Hello ! so thankful for such a tutorial!!! Can I ask you a question - how did they come up with this shape? do you reckon they do it with fusion as a generative design?
My pleasure! The way they came up with the shape was pure modeling and testing. There were no generative design methods involved (to my knowledge). Most of the best parametric-looking stuff out there is actually hardcore-modeled haha.
@@DesignGoBrr thanks for your reply!! :) I am now a year 1 student of architecture and I am quite nervous about the parametric and generative design because I am now learning online by myself with grasshopper but I feel like i cannot find the common ground of the tutorials - it seems I learnt one technique (lets say isocurve) and it doesn't connect to any other parametric design. I feel like I cannot create my own language from grasshopper due to the complexity of that(I am quite an art students so lol). How should I learn grasshopper or any parametric and generative design to be effective? (adore your design ability a lot) thanks xx
Superb! Hello! can you help my? I want removes all duplicate faces mesh in Grasshopper rhino3D 5 or 6, the plugin Mesh cull Duplicate Faces not delete all
But at least now we get SubD to kinda substitute it.. It will probably be a bit faster as well in Rhino7, since it's going to be native and not a plugin.

When i click on Tosubd for the 2 towers, everything dissapears. But when making it out of one box, it works. How to fix this ?
Hmm make sure that you dont have any pentagons or triangles in your mesh.

Great educational video! Your way of communication and handling mistakes kind of reminds me of Bob Ross ngl haha
What do you mean by mistakes? Are you referring to the happy little accidents?
Great shapes. But how do you manufacture this? Seems like a very costly build.
Either expensive machinery (cnc) or master crafstmanship. But yes - complex geometries are always expensive

It's under display settings "Color Backfaces" should be turned on, and then you can colorize them in any color you want.
