Utility knife blades can get dull pretty quickly depending on what you cut with them. And if you've never changed the blade or don't know how, please watch this short tutorial. I own several several utility knives but one of them has an easy to open storage compartment for new blades. The others have storage compartments as well but they're not as easy to access.
To change a utility knife blade on any of standard utility knife, the retaining screw has to be removed first. And then the cover should slide right off. Inside there are usually fresh blades stored at the back of the handle. To change the blade carefully lift the old one out. Then slip the new one in place. And there's also a little tab that helps hold the blade in position. Sometimes the locking blade slider falls out of position but just line it up at the top and back into the track.
Often I'll refill the storage compartment while the knife is open so I'll always have fresh blades ready. Last thing to do is reattach the cover and screw it back together. One thing to note is that you can use both ends of the blades. So when one end is dull, just open up the knife and flip the blade around to the fresh side.
But if you do run out of sharp blades, I've listed the replacement blades I keep in my toolbox here in the description. It has a nice sliding dispenser that makes it easy to grab one safely. I know this is tutorial is fairly basic but if this video was helpful please give me a thumbs up and hit the subscribe button to stay up to day on my DIY videos.

This video didnt help me as I have a snap off blade.
Same! 😂 I'm at work trippin' for at least 15min trying to figure it out! LoL
It is fairly basic, but there's some of us who've never done it before :) Thanks!
Jeez! I'm making an algebra problem out of 2+2. So simple, thank you.
It is so funny that Stanley engineered this utility knife to be so simple that everyone thinks there’s gotta be more to the process of actually putting in the blade and using it 😂😂😂
OMG WHAT A PROJECT! Good thing theres a video to do almost anything !! Thank you for posting
Glad you found my video! I’m happy it was helpful!
Thank God for people like u helping us with stuff like this 😂
I am 58 years old diri not knew about this with the help of this video I changed blade thanks 😊
Anytime is a good time to learn! Glad my utility knife tutorial was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much! The utility knife I got from Ace had zero instructions on it, and apparently these knives' designs have changed since the last time I bought one of them. Great video!
It is a) amazing how youtube provides you a video on almost everything you need (even the small things) in life and b) how easy it was to do after seeing it. I am embarrassed...
I feel the same way! There’s a video about anything you want to know on TH-cam! Glad my tutorial was helpful!
Thank you so much , this video has been more than helpful 🙏
WOO! ty sm very simple and easy explanation!
Thanks so much for this video. I am so visual that having a walk through cuts down on stress. I've changed the blades often enough so it ought to be a no brainer. My brain doesn't agree.
Thank you for sharing! I knew there was a catch somewhere. Glad you made this video!
You’re welcome! Glad my video helped! Thanks for watching!
Thank you! This was soooo helpful! there were no instructions on the package of the utility knife I bought, I appreciate your help!
You’re welcome! Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this tutorial. Came in handy.
yea it literally came in (HANDY)😊
Very helpful
Thank you!
Thank you so much! I didn't lose a finger! I put the blade in upside down so it wouldn't click in. Once I turned it over and lined it up with the settings in place to push the blade up it worked! Thanks again!
I've done it many times before and even though it's so simple, things didn't line up properly. Last time I used the knife, the blade slipped out! But somehow, magically, just watching you, I got it right this time!
Excellent! Glad my utility knife tutorial helped! Thanks for watching!
Seems like it would be simple but I was doing it Bass-Ackwards until I saw this! Thanks!
Thanks so much😊
Thank you, super helpful! :)
You’re welcome! Glad my video was helpful!
Thank you
Thanks! I rarely need to replace a blade but I always have difficulty. A major "Dua" factor on my part.
You’re welcome! Glad my utility knife tutorial was helpful! Thanks for watching!
I swear I did this exact thing for like 10 minutes before watching this and all of a sudden it worked 💀
Glad my video helped! Thanks for watching!
When I use to work in distribution we had utility knives with full box guides and easy replacement from using the slider a certain way and lifting the blade out.
Never occured to me that store bought cutters would just have a retaining screw and you'd have to take the whole thing apart 😂
Thanks so muches
Thanks so much. I didn't see the extra blades!!!
You’re welcome! It’s really handy with the extra blades in the storage compartment.
You saved me 😅
i have been changing razor knife blades for 30 years and i struggle every time. the little pusher button thing pops out and for some reason it takes me 3-4 minutes to get it all back together i have no idea what my problem is
Thank you! I had the blade facing the wrong way 🤦🏾♀️😂
I have a GENERAL #856 knife that I can’t figure out how to keep the blade in . Could I be missing a piece?
Esas cucchillas son excelentes y de calidad.-
I agree! Those blades are great!
Thanks 😂
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
That's what I do, but the mechanism never goes back into place so that it slides in and out. It's stuck, so I have to reposition the blade and lever so that it's always out and I can't close the blade. It's frustrating to throw the cutters away because they are no longer safe.
Let me understand you line up the blade with the push handle how do you get the push handle back on if by chance it comes off
Yes! The push handle falls out easily but it can be placed back in its slot just as easily. It happens to me all the time. Don’t worry about it. It will only work one way. Hope this helps!
@@digitalcamproducer thanks
If you have to open the knife anyway to change the blade, aren't those stored at the back of the handle just as convenient?
Yes! The extra blades stored in the handle make it really convenient when you need to change a dull one. But when you run out it’s handy to have the big pack to refill the storage compartment.
Easier said than done...
I can't get the blades separate from one another. they are stuck together.😥😥😥
I have seen that happen before. You could try to use the old blade to wedge between the stuck blades. Wear gloves for safety. Hope this helps!
