I just thought I would give an update on how me and poppy are doing. The first thing that I have worked out is that it is me that is being trained and not poppy. Because of this poppy has become a lot calmer and relaxed, she comes up for more cuddles with us which is lovely. There is still some barking at other dogs which is getting less and she sat whilst a dog walked passed us for the first time about a week ago (a very proud daddy) things are moving in the right direction. Walking has become a pleasure with no pulling on the lead. Thanks again Will and team
@@simplime1 I am doing as it is ongoing learning for both poppy and myself. The nice thing with the slip lead now is that the slights of lead pressure and she is so in tune with me. I couldn't say what the future brings with wheather we will continue with the slip lead, but all I can say is that putting the harness back on and she starts to pull again.
For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕
Thank you for your help with me and poppy, we have taken everything you showed me in the session and using it in the real world. We went out for a walk this evening and she walked beautifully. We are able to get closer to other dogs. Not perfect yet but getting better. Slip lead all the way.
How old is Poppy? We just adopted a 5yo owner-surrender/shelter rescue 5.5 months ago and have the same issue with hyper focus and bouncing at the end of the leash/desperate barking when she sees another dog. How long was that session to get such a night and day difference? Amazing!
Just got a 14 week old border heeler … this page has given me confidence in being a leader and has giving me confidence in being capable of raising my dog to be amazing truly this channel is amazing
So weird how much of my own situation felt mirrored in this video. I have a black pit/lab mix and she does all the things Poppy did. Pulls at the leash incessantly, barks at any human who gets within 10 feet of her, and now even barks at other dogs (she didn’t used to, so the leash aggression is getting worse). She also tries to wander off to the side and does sudden stops to examine anything of interest with her. Frequently crosses behind me, and more dangerously, in front of me, which means I step on her paw, or trip myself up trying to avoid that. She’s a little over a year now, and I got her at 3 months from a shelter, where she had already been adopted once and returned. So I was determined not to fail her…but I am. Anyway, these videos do help, I just wish I could get in-person owner training from Will. Also, if anyone read this entire comment, thank you for listening to my TEDtalk. 😬☺️
Omgg I am in the exactly same situation with my 1 year old labra-golden. 😅😅 everything you said I can agree 1000% with you! Still struggling but I know we will get over it!
My Rotty / Shepherd Cross has just started this kind of behaviour (14 - 15 months), I put it down to that awkward teenage/adult phase where the dog thinks she knows best
My ten month old lab is the same. We adopted her two months ago and walking her is a nightmare. In the house she's fine, even with visitors. Outside she's fine until she see's other people or dogs. She won't listen or even acknowledge I'm there. We're just getting her used to heel. She knows sit, stay, up and down. She's not destructive and she's never bit or been aggressive, it's just excitement but it must be awful to have a dog lunging and barking at you, even if her tail is wagging. I follow all training protocol and nothing is working. I would say teenage days myself but it's all I've known from her. I wonder if he's ever failed to train a dog and what happens to those who are not trainable. All these pups are nothing like mine. She's like ultra super pup when we're out and walk past others. Even with the slip lead further up.
I've had this problem since day one of finding a GSD I rescued. Your videos have helped me understand her so much! You have no idea how much you helped me and Marley connect. Love you man, I'll always watch your content!
It works magic! I have been trying it with many shelter dogs (I walk them often), and even during our first walks I manage to reduce reactivity (leash pulling/barking at other dogs, etc.) by 70%. I can imagine, how fast we would progress, if it was done every day. Just basically changing directions already helps a lot, the doggie waits for your next move and doesn't pull that much! You develop engagement and focus at the same time.
My husband and I rescued an abused husky whose previous owners kept her chained up and let their other dog harm her so she is terrified of other dogs. We've had her a year and have tried everyday to work with her, but have only made little progress. I'm definitely going to try a head halter now. Thanks for this
Thank you for clarifying the difference in reactivity between fear based and confidence based. My 3 year old rescue pitbull is a very confident boy. He is reactive to some dogs, usually larger dogs, but he seems happy to greet them and then gets reactive after a few seconds. I need to work on my leadership so he looks to me in those situations. I really enjoy your helpful videos
Oh my gosh I needed to find this video. I have a border collie mix and he’s the classic “He’s a GREAT dog, really! He just sometimes….” dog. I’ve tried tons of different methods to correct him. Finally I did what this owner did and started avoiding public places because my awesome, affectionate dog is a raving psycho when he sees other dogs. I will be buying a slip lead today and trying this out!
My dog is exactly the same. The nicest pain in the ass when unleashed (he harass other dogs to play more sometimes, but he calms down when i call him), but with the leash he goes nuts for every dogs. It's only play with the females, but with the males it's like he wants to tell them he's the craziest around and the boss of the area. But as soon as I unleash him, he smells the other dog and starts to play. It's getting really annoying. So if you see this comment, I would like to know if you have any update on your situation and if the slip lead helped.
The slip lead really helped! He’s still not perfect; I have to give other dogs space when walking. However, I can usually walk on the opposite side of the road from other dogs if they aren’t reactive. It makes it sooo much easier to correct him. No shouting, repeating commands, or having to drag him for half a block before he stops lunging. He even learned not to lunge at squirrels, rabbits, and bikes. He has a strong prey drive and wants to chase things that move, but now it’s just if he suddenly sees it close up or a bike whizzes right past us. I can actually enjoy walks with him, and he will come back if I call him and he’s off leash.
You do have a real gift. Boy, do I relate this this situation!! We experience the same issues. My Lab/Staffy spent her first year in a kennel with zero experiences and came to me with a lot of bad habits including reactivity. I was not the leader I needed to be, but I am learning, and she is improving as well.
This make me hopeful. I'm looking to take on a 3y lab who's had a really bad start in life. I put in serious effort with my other dog, a shepherd mix who was a nervous wreck when I adopted her and she is absolutely brilliant now.... I really hope I can do the same for this little lab. These videos are such a helpful resource to remind me what to do!
I love the “loading” comment. I can sense that with my rottie pei without even looking at her - she sends the energy up the lead. I love all of what you’re saying! I’m slowly winning the argument that I am actually the pack leader, not her stubborn, sassy ass 😂
I have been having MAJOR issues with our 11 month old pocket bully when it comes to walking on a leash. I'm going to be trying out some of these tricks and see if o can get him to stop lunging for other dogs on our walk. Wish us luck 🤞
Excited to try this training with my new companion, 2yr old Golden Ret. My hand would get almost swollen from pulling her back the whole walk on our first day. Next few days, her pull gradually lessened. I was wondering what was causing this. Luckily I found this vid. Thanks to Will. A.
You are by far the best trainer I’ve seen on TH-cam. I’m pretty competent training, but I have two distance behaviors I could use help with. One: getting on furniture when I’m not home. We don’t use a crate and she only does it when I’m not home. Not in front of me. Playing rough in response to rough play. She is a rescue and can be reactive and bitey at a distance. Working on leave it and recall and it’s going well, more looking for a way to train that behavior away specifically since it’s so momentary and a reaction.
What a guy!!!!! I have a 7 year old parsons Jack Russell. Regardless of collar or harness we use he spins, pulls zig zags in front of you. And when he sees another dog barks, pulls and just wants to get to the dog. (He’s perfect in the house and reacts well to toys and treats for training. But once he’s outside he just has tunnel vision and no one can get his attention) I’ve never used or likes the idea of a slip lead as I was misguided on them. After watching your videos I got a slip lead and over a space of 15 minutes my Jack has started his transformation. Walks at the side of you. No pulling, no zig zag no pressure on the lead. When you stop walking he stops instantly. Turns instantly I just need to try and figure out how to get his attention. I can not seem to get any eye contact from him.
@Good Golly Miss Holly That sounds horrible! My Jack has always had another dog around him. He’s always been content as a follower dog. However my issues started when our eldest dog passed away from old age. I think he’s still trying to find his feet and where his place is. In addition he’s the wife’s dog so he doesn’t really see me as his owner, he is home with him most the day and follows her everywhere.
Thank you, you can't imagine how helpful you are, I have two rescue dogs, both were aggressive at the beginning, not now thanks to your counselling but they still do some noises when I play with them. This attitude and the beginning issues I think that have frightened my third dog, that was very calm until I offered a home to the other two. Now he looks some kind of angry and is isolating himself most part of the time. While the other two are more balancing now, how I can help to Jake to be more comfortable again?
Thank you for showing a great example of how to correct a reactive/independent female! My female toller has similar issues. Eager to apply these techniques with her!
*I've just taken on a 4 year old Labrador (male from Romania) that has come to live with our 8 year old male Lab' and 15 year old terrier mix. Although he came from a family home, where they have lots of dogs apparently, he was kept away from them all and made to sleep outside in their yard. They then had him castrated a few days before his journey to the UK, where it was discovered that he had an infection and was given antibiotics. He was then put up for adoption as a Labrador cross, although he always looked a pure Lab' to me and that was confirmed yesterday, when I was able to message his previous owner. I only mention that as I love the temperament of Labrador and there was a tiny concern when I was unsure what breed he might have been crossed with. Anyway, as soon as I saw Athos (now called Buddy!) I just knew he was coming home with us. Initial introductions went pretty well and there was no aggression in either direction. His old owner said he was kept on his own because he couldn't be near other males so I wonder if the castration has tempered that behaviour? Ironically, had they made us aware of that history we would probably not have adopted him. Still, he's here to stay now but I do need help undoing the past 4 years it seems. He already knows his new name and will come when called about 80% of the time. He won't come if there is anything else that's remotely interesting though! He also just gets hugely excited when there are other dogs, cows, people etc. He can also get so excited that he starts mouthing and jumping up. I'm 6' 2'' and a bit of a lump so can deal with this but my Mrs can't and she's clearly (and understandably) intimidated by Buddy. I wonder if he senses this as he can start that behaviour with there being another animal to react to? I have told her to use a toy and put that in his mouth to deal with the mouthing and to make a noise that's clearly disapproving. The whole situation is improving slowly and I just know there's a lovely dog in there that wants to be given guidance. I just want to say thanks for these videos as I just wouldn't know where to start without them!*
Hello Will ,Corey and Bruce Wayne & J.J said stop by, here I am. Like yr approaches, pretty much what u show and tell people is common sense, facts, and logic. No offense i blame many owners not the breed! The States watching, stay safe and Beautiful out there.✌
Will just gave you a sub to your fantastic channel about this mind blowing dog. Well Will I'm homeless living out of a campervan 3 years now. Anyway Will I came into the care of a 5-month old Belgian because my daughter got it but some found that she wasn't as cute as she taught. That's were I stepped in and took her because I needed the company. And to say this dog took me out of my severe depression is an understatement. Will love you channel because for me I need all the help I can get. I'm willing to put the time in with her. She sits in the front of my campervan just sitting there ears cocked Notting can distract her till she knows the cost is clear. It's just mind blowing how intelligent and understanding she can be. As iv said iv had a bit hard since this cov.19. this dog has me out every day. As iv said I believe this dog saved my Life. Would love to return the favour and stick with her know matter what. Will would love any tips. Only stumbled across you today so I will catch up. Have you done anything about then in there first year. If so please let us know. Thank you Will love your content and Cheers from Dublin Ireland 💯🇮🇪🙏🐕🦺
I really hope I have time to implement these things and that it will work. We have a 3 month old baby and our dog has been really causing lots of problems. He peed on our couch and ruined it while we were away. He tears up the trash. Has separation anxiety. Pulls and is reactive…But we can’t afford a dog trainer. We are scraping by as it is. I hope there is a better future in sight.
I'm excited to use your suggestions for showing leadership with my granddog. She is a rescue, so we don't know her history, other than information that she has been given up due to not getting along with neighbor dogs. Hard to imagine anyone giving up this sweet girl, but glad she is in our lives now. What I've seen is her being reactive when another dog gets too involved with her while she is leashed. Your video with the other trained dog is great, but for those of us without the second dog, do you have suggestions on how to help her social skills (and mine!) So far I've walked her around the outside of the dog park fence to at least expose her to other dogs. Thanks for your help and I'll keep going through your videos and I've shared with my daughter who owns the dog.
I have a Frenchi-pug mix who I rescued about 4 months ago. He reacts to every dog barking and jumping. I have tried different leashes and finally decided to try the gentle leader type leash. It works on him walking better with me, but he is so stubborn. If I get him in a sit, which can be a big struggle on its own at times, he still barks and whines at the other animal and basically ignores me. I can't get that dog to look at me for any guidance. I know I must be doing something wrong. But I am at a loss of what to change. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Love your channel, you always have such good insight on the dog's behavior
Did it. Nothing just completely ignores if there is any kind of distraction. Like people walk by he just lays down until they get close and he lunges because he doesn’t like being ignored. I have to practically drag him. Even if slip lead or prong collar. Pit Bull Terrier
What is the best way to deal with another dog off lead coming over to your reactive leashed dog- I have a holty and bright yellow / nervous signs on my dog when out.. she gets really barky and frantic As a puppy she was frightened by a larger dog and it terrified her, and me as the dog was huge stood on back legs snapping at me while i held my pup above my head to save her .. the big dogs owner didn’t care very irresponsible etc Since then my confidence has been knocked and my dog now 4 yrs old can only go walk at night when no other dogs around - we cannot got to woods or fields through fear of her getting reactive and being attacked! She’s a little Jrt.
I have had a JRT rescue dog for 7 weeks now, and little is known of his past. He is very reactive on the lead with other dogs, so much so that my pet insurance will not include cover for his aggression. I have tried the vibrator collar used at the highest pitch, with no help. He is always focused on looking for other dogs on walks. What is the lead you are using in this video? Is it worth buying a humane muzzle for him? Thank you.
Does this same training apply to a dog who will not stop barking at guests when they come over? Really struggling with it with my little rescue. ACD/Collie/Ausie mix.
If he is unable to help you, upstate canine academy in the USA might also be an option for you to consider, you can find them here on TH-cam by searching their name, I am only recommending them incase this trainer cannot help as both have very similar training styles 🙂
I recently adopted a dog (3 weeks ago). He’s a rat terrier/cattle dog mix and I know which these two breeds there anxiety and pent up energy that has to be redirected. I’ve been watching your videos since I got him and I’ve been practicing walking methods with him. He does well with other dogs off leash-even on leash when he approaches he doesn’t bite but he jumps on them and makes loud whining sounds. I try not to speak to him when he does that since he doesn’t listen. I recently got a martingale collar which he does not care for. I’m waiting for his gentle lead to come in to help with redirecting because he will still pull with the martingale. I try not to apply pressure but he has proven to need the pressure on walks because he actively looks for dogs. I feel like I need the lead you have if the gentle lead doesn’t work. I’m hoping he does better with the practice I take from your videos! 😊
You mentioned the difference between an independent reactive dog and a fearful reactive dog. Would this method work for a fearful dog? I recently got a slip lead for my mini Australian Shepard. She does give me a good level of connection/attention with only a few back and forths. But whenever she sees another dog she loses it right away. Her fuse is shorter and the “loading time” is shorter. I’ve noticed when she’s over her threshold she couldn’t care less if she’s choking because she’s afraid of her surroundings. This is especially had with other off leash dogs with their owners, strays, and walks in the dark. What can I do before she goes off to keep her calm?
I've just subbed. Wish I had found you when I had Bob 😭. He was a rescue a staked dog for training dogs to fight. We tried everything and couldn't help him. I think you might have helped.
I think this is great. However, that collar can't really be used on an 8 pound dog and collars shouldn't be put around small dogs because they can have (or it can lead to) collapsing trachea. So my question is what would you do if your dog is doing the same thing that Poppy was doing, but you can't use that type of collar (or any collar. Harness needs to be used)? Would you instead use a front clip harness?
Could you explain what the difference is between the two? Like my dog is very reactive on the lead but I don't know if it's fear based or not, he's a rescue was abused as a puppy by his old owners, never been on a leash, never been outside, skin and bones and flea ridden! He's doing amazing now but apart from the reactivity to other dogs. Like he'll sniff one dog off the lead and then see the same dog on the lead and go furious? Any help is appreciated!
My dog is good now at not overreacting to other dogs at a distance. But she still lunges/attempts to bite if she's within a couple feet of the other dog. How do I train her to simply sniff the other dog and chill out?
My dog has reactivity, but only if then other dog is excited or barking at him to start with, so it makes it 10 times harder to get his attention, what do you do then? If another dog is calm then so is mine..
I think that lead has soo much todo with it i think its amazing ..i really do I dont have the ragnar lead but i upgraded to a slip lead sore some improvement.. turned it into a figure of 8 slip lead ... Its a different dog I have zero to know doubt a slip leash when in any walk related training is by far the most useful tool in the owners arsenal and applying the techniques seen in the engagement drills is just insane how fast it works U gotta love this channel Skol !!!!
You talk about a relationship with the dog, which is so important in training, and I can see the dogs instantly recognise you as a leader. I'm curious, dthe owners have more difficulty tipping that balance, and the dog seeing them as a leader, because of all the time the owner hasn't instilled this, and because of all the other factors at home or out and about with the owner, where leadership isn't being instilled? Does it take longer for the dog to switch to seeing the owner as a leader I guess is what I'm asking.
The slip lead slips down from the "power steering band" when my dog looks down to sniff the ground. I have to readjust every five seconds. How do I fix this?
I have watched so many videos and have so many conflicting ways of Training a dog I'm confused. I rescued a 10month cockerpoo and he is very reactive to other dogs and now traffic! It's making me so stressed. I have tried treat, toys etc but he is only focused on what's coming and going.
Hi I love watching ur videos..I have a 3year old male black lab..I was wondering what training collar would you recommend to get him..I've tried a couple but none of them have worked..I can't find a strong enough one..thanks
We adopted a straydog, a Marem Mano. She was never really chill with walking, but suddenly she is just barking at éveryone very aggressively. It seems like nothing we do is helping her stop this behavior. She is not like this dog, but completely freaking out all the time. Please, please give us some advise
Not all dogs' reactivity stems from anxiety and fear. My staffy cross merely wants to play, be it with other dogs or humans. Unfortunately this manifests itself as reactive. It would be interesting to see how to control this with in a dog who is neither anxious nor fearful. I do everything you pointed out, but some dogs still set her off, especially when we go out in a group.
Hello i want to ask you on your opinion if i should keep a golden retriver inside or outside especially during the winter time. I think that i should keep him inside but my parent say that he could be outiside
I have a 2 year old very sweet Staffy X. She was rescued from dog baiting and is very submissive and anxious in strange situations. She’s getting much better and I socialise her several times a day in different places with visits to a dog park thrown in each week. She’s fantastic at the dog park, no issues there. When on lead she can occasionally lunge a little toward a particular dog, not all I’d say 1 in 20 dogs she takes an exception to when on lead. I’m aware of this possibility and take precautions if I sense her getting anxious. I keep her healed in those situations and she behaves well and responds immediately if I intervene with a stern command. She’s very smart and is responding well to training but I’m a little stuck on what to do. She doesn’t bark and lunge at passing dogs. It happens when she meeting another dog and I correct it quickly on those rare occasions. How do I help her to become less anxious which is where this behaviour is stemming from? If I can make her feel safe, more confident, and less anxious I think with quick training corrections this behaviour will fade quickly. If anyone has any suggestions on where to start I’d be very grateful. Her happiness is very important to me. Thanks, Michael
You need to make her feel you are in control of things so she doesn't have to and that she needs to look at you for direction. Give her more structure, train her on the place command and her training should be how to be calm and confident when nothing is happening.
Dude, how did you learn all this? I'm UK based and no idea how to start and I know you have courses online, but I'm someone that learns with being shown in person.
Thanks so much for watching! Check out Will's new channel looking at how to get started in the canine industry! th-cam.com/channels/6iBSUDz6OxwpOYZ53bZaHQ.html
Great tips thank you. I've a reactive young retriever after he was attacked and he's now anxious. Some dogs he couldn't care less but others he's very clearly anxious and lunges. He has a fantastic harness but seeing this wants me to try the other type of lead. Can I ask does it matter if you go to the same places to train ie local area rather then try new places until behaviours have improved ?
Any advice on a dog that whines excessively on walks? I'm watching my sisters lab and he will cry non stop (I'm assuming out of excitement) the entire walk.
If you would have said 16 years, then maybe... :-) You know it is never ever too late with basically any dog - they live in the moment and are always ready to change. It is usually us humans who are more unwilling to learn new things and change our ways in how we communicate with our dogs. ;-) Find a balanced trainer where you live and if you are really devoted to it - sky's the limit!

@@johnpenneyston8101 Hey John, thanks for your reply. I am constantly working on my english understanding and general skills. What is the correct term for your accent? I guess it is not Cockney? By the way: You have a beautiful dog!

I am trying, and currently we are at a loss...shes a 5 year old rescue, ive got no information about her at all....walking her is improving a billion percent since ive taken it upon myself to take the lead....but ive got ms and my condition is going to get worse...shes a border terrier/lakeland terrier mix....she is a complete nightmare around other dogs......she doesnt bark..she screams..ive never ever heard anything like it...and shes not toy or food orientated...treat her for good behaviour...nope, give her a ball to play with...nope...i need a clue please...
Brill video as always will. Get so much advice from your videos. I recently got a herm sprenger prong for my gsd and the difference in her walking is completely better even if she walks away she realises straight away and back to a heel. Thanks for your help
We have a chihuahua (rescued 1 year ago about 3 years old) who is deathly terrified of basically everyone but my mom. She growls and barks and sounds very aggressive when we walk in, but she has never tried to bite any of us once or done anything else aggressive. It seems like she is just terrified of us. She’s a very sweet dog when it’s just my mom around and once everyone has been home for 10 minutes or so she is okay, but doesn’t really trust us (I’m her second favorite behind my mom, but she never runs up to me wagging her tail with that happy look on her face). Does anyone have an idea of how we can get her to trust us more? We have been trying to hold her and be sweet but at the end of the day she is still just terrified of anyone who isn’t my mom. Thanks in advance!
I also have an exteremly reactive rescue dog with the same background. She is a chihuahua mix. I tried the same leash, i kept it above just behind her ears. But she choked her almost to death. She never gives up lunching and barking to other dogs. I am hopeless. I tried everything even a dog pshycologist and psychotherapy. I have worked with several trainers. My life is a nightmare. My other dog has changed behaviour too. He is much bigger. I can not handle them both when we see a dog or a cat. I once broke my fingers, once my wrist... I am her last hope, nobody wants this dog but I really don't know what to do.
Your dog does not feel she needs to listen to you. Try using a bonker (ie. a small soft pillow or rolled up towel); when she is doing an unwanted behavior, mark it with the word NO and then throw the pillow so it lands near her or on her. You only need to do this 2 or 3 times before she understands what the word NO means and going forward you should be able to use the word NO to stop whatever she is doing.
@@robin212212 I don't know how to thank you. I used a bonker and we had our best walk ever! No barking, no lunching. She looks at me now when we see a dog or a cat. I wish I knew this before. Thank you!
the person who owned my dog before me let him get away with so much, but I don't and he still isn't good like this 😭 the way y'all do it makes it seem so easy lol I do literally all of these things. I think he may be getting slightly better maybe perhaps? he's my first dog and I'm really trying to do right by him, but he's very strong lol I bought a gentle leader to help me a little, but in afraid it's not a long term solution
One of my Basset Hound’s barks at everyone and he is quite a strong dog and has pulled my mother over before. He is a stubborn dog (unlike my other one)and only listened to my dad from when I was young,Sometimes he does listen and ignores but most the time he doesn’t. We also have a big front gate he has gotten through before and chased people but the people down the lane are used to dogs and bring him back to us. He growls when you tell him to get of the sofa and we are working on that! This did help I will try this out when walking him!
Fuck I screwed up... I rewarded for loading. Dog is a new rescue, was reactive to just small dogs on our meet and greet but she goes nuts at any dog now. Hopefully I can fix it, I'll go down to the park early tomorrow and practice just keeping her attention on me. Walks fine most of the time just as soon as she sees dogs, and a bit worried about how she showed a bit similar to a child.. she's five and I've had her for one day, gotta get that attention. Can I do this in the home as well though? She's fantastically behaved indoors so, would be good to do it where it's easy to get her attention, get her use to the lead corrections and looking at me
I just thought I would give an update on how me and poppy are doing.
So good to hear John, thanks for letting us know!!
After this kind of training with slip lead, do you need to continue to walk with slip lead on for a while, till she is much much better?

Amazed! Which online Fenrir course do you recommend to learn these techniques?
She’s a beautiful looking dog.
Great to see you walk the dog nicely like that the same day. That change came really quickly.
It was very quick and that's due to Wills calmness. I have continued this training at home and it is starting to pay off with poppy
How old is Poppy? We just adopted a 5yo owner-surrender/shelter rescue 5.5 months ago and have the same issue with hyper focus and bouncing at the end of the leash/desperate barking when she sees another dog. How long was that session to get such a night and day difference? Amazing!
@@jenncece5858 poppy is 9 years old. We didn't know if she could change. It is a slower process but she is getting better.
Hi John, how much weighting would you give to the slip lead? Is it a must have in this training?
You have a gift for explaining perfectly what a dog is thinking. You're a natural teacher.

I am in the exactly same situation with my 1 year old labra-golden. 😅😅 everything you said I can agree 1000% with you! Still struggling but I know we will get over it!
My Rotty / Shepherd Cross has just started this kind of behaviour (14 - 15 months), I put it down to that awkward teenage/adult phase where the dog thinks she knows best
Why does it seem we all struggle in the 1yr age range ?
Nobody can compete with this channel
It works magic! I have been trying it with many shelter dogs (I walk them often), and even during our first walks I manage to reduce reactivity (leash pulling/barking at other dogs, etc.) by 70%. I can imagine, how fast we would progress, if it was done every day. Just basically changing directions already helps a lot, the doggie waits for your next move and doesn't pull that much! You develop engagement and focus at the same time.
Honestly, world class presentation.
My husband and I rescued an abused husky whose previous owners kept her chained up and let their other dog harm her so she is terrified of other dogs. We've had her a year and have tried everyday to work with her, but have only made little progress. I'm definitely going to try a head halter now. Thanks for this
Lovely dog, just needed a bit of Will’s no-nonsense yet magical mastery of canine behavior.👏
Wow, trying this as soon as yhe slip lead arrives, I did think that its was down to me having more control. Thank you so much for all your videos
Fab video because more real life. My attempts never quite look like Will’s successes! Thank you
What a guy!!!!!
I have a 7 year old parsons Jack Russell. Regardless of collar or harness we use he spins, pulls zig zags in front of you. And when he sees another dog barks, pulls and just wants to get to the dog. (He’s perfect in the house and reacts well to toys and treats for training. But once he’s outside he just has tunnel vision and no one can get his attention)
I’ve never used or likes the idea of a slip lead as I was misguided on them.
After watching your videos I got a slip lead and over a space of 15 minutes my Jack has started his transformation. Walks at the side of you. No pulling, no zig zag no pressure on the lead. When you stop walking he stops instantly. Turns instantly
I just need to try and figure out how to get his attention. I can not seem to get any eye contact from him.
@Good Golly Miss Holly
That sounds horrible!
Amazing to see the change so quickly.
Eager to apply these techniques with her!
what would be recommend for a brachycephalic dog? a slip lead could be really dangerous
Just found your channel. So interesting and I love the passion in which you do your work!
You’re so smart, thank you!! Thank you thank you thank you!
This os so brilliant
Hello Will ,Corey and Bruce Wayne & J.J said stop by, here I am.
Like yr approaches, pretty much what u show and tell people is common sense, facts, and logic. No offense i blame many owners not the breed! The States watching, stay safe and Beautiful out there.✌
Wow... really impressive. Gonna try this. First I realise I need a new lead. The harness is doing me no favours!!
After this kind of training with slip lead, do you need to continue to walk with slip lead on for a while, till she is much much better?
This is literally my dog. Great video.
What’s the neck rope collar Will is using to help lead and train Poppy?
Can someone tell me what that leash is called? Thank you!
Would a choker chain be just as good ,or pull correction chain ? Or do I need better equipment
Every video amazes me. So inspiring.
Then how can I progress to eliminate the slip lead in the future ? Or will I forever need a slip lead
What should I be doing while i see my dog is loading? Should I turn him away and walk a different direction? Let it pass? Say anything to him?
What is the best way to deal with another dog off lead coming over to your reactive leashed dog- I have a holty and bright yellow / nervous signs on my dog when out.. she gets really barky and frantic
As a puppy she was frightened by a larger dog and it terrified her, and me as the dog was huge stood on back legs snapping at me while i held my pup above my head to save her .. the big dogs owner didn’t care very irresponsible etc
Since then my confidence has been knocked and my dog now 4 yrs old can only go walk at night when no other dogs around - we cannot got to woods or fields through fear of her getting reactive and being attacked!
Thank you.
Your videos are great mate. Are you east Midland?
Does this same training apply to a dog who will not stop barking at guests when they come over? Really struggling with it with my little rescue. ACD/Collie/Ausie mix.
Amazing!
Would you recommend guided and structured socialisation of this dog as her next step?
I’m in Colorado and I really like you as a trainer which sucks is there anyway to do this virtually
If he is unable to help you, upstate canine academy in the USA might also be an option for you to consider, you can find them here on TH-cam by searching their name, I am only recommending them incase this trainer cannot help as both have very similar training styles 🙂
Chewie is a 3 year old Springer Pitt mix, pulls like a tractor, I just got your slip lead, should I use it all the time or just when training?
New here, and here to stay. Incredibly informative videos, and it’s apparent how much you love the work. Cheers!
The Jamie Oliver of dog training
I've just subbed. Wish I had found you when I had Bob 😭.
He was a rescue a staked dog for training dogs to fight.
We tried everything and couldn't help him.
I think you might have helped.
Could you have the same outcome with a no pull harness? Wondering if I need to get a slip lead.
great video, what about extreme reactivity in the car?
Excellent! 👌
Same here
Where can I buy this lead in the US?
I think that lead has soo much todo with it i think its amazing ..i really do
I dont have the ragnar lead but i upgraded to a slip lead sore some improvement.. turned it into a figure of 8 slip lead ...
Its a different dog
I have zero to know doubt a slip leash when in any walk related training is by far the most useful tool in the owners arsenal and applying the techniques seen in the engagement drills is just insane how fast it works
U gotta love this channel
Skol !!!!
You legend ❤️
Merry Christmas Man. ♥️🐕♥️♥️
Wow will your amazing
We adopted a straydog, a Marem Mano. She was never really chill with walking, but suddenly she is just barking at éveryone very aggressively. It seems like nothing we do is helping her stop this behavior. She is not like this dog, but completely freaking out all the time. Please, please give us some advise
Love to see it.
Do you have any videos working with specifically fear reactive dogs?? Is how you would deal with it different??
Not all dogs' reactivity stems from anxiety and fear. My staffy cross merely wants to play, be it with other dogs or humans. Unfortunately this manifests itself as reactive. It would be interesting to see how to control this with in a dog who is neither anxious nor fearful. I do everything you pointed out, but some dogs still set her off, especially when we go out in a group.
I have the same problem with my gsd.
Hello i want to ask you on your opinion if i should keep a golden retriver inside or outside especially during the winter time. I think that i should keep him inside but my parent say that he could be outiside
Also big fan from Macedonia🇲🇰
Thanks,
Michael
You need to make her feel you are in control of things so she doesn't have to and that she needs to look at you for direction. Give her more structure, train her on the place command and her training should be how to be calm and confident when nothing is happening.
Dude, how did you learn all this? I'm UK based and no idea how to start and I know you have courses online, but I'm someone that learns with being shown in person.
Thanks so much for watching! Check out Will's new channel looking at how to get started in the canine industry! th-cam.com/channels/6iBSUDz6OxwpOYZ53bZaHQ.html
This seems too simple to be true 😭 I’m going to give it a shot!
Unfortunately this does not work with my 8 month old French Bulldog who is very stubborn. He only does the direction change with a correction.
What if my dog just gets excited and wants to play all the time
Subbed!
Can you still teach your dog to look up to you for guidance even if my boy is 1 year and 6 months now?? Or did I miss the opportunity
If you would have said 16 years, then maybe... :-) You know it is never ever too late with basically any dog - they live in the moment and are always ready to change. It is usually us humans who are more unwilling to learn new things and change our ways in how we communicate with our dogs. ;-)
Find a balanced trainer where you live and if you are really devoted to it - sky's the limit!

Like your channel, just subscribed. As a german guy, I am wondering what accent do you guys speak? I am just curious.
I'm from Cheshire South of Manchester
@@johnpenneyston8101 Hey John, thanks for your reply. I am constantly working on my english understanding and general skills. What is the correct term for your accent? I guess it is not Cockney?
By the way: You have a beautiful dog!
i need your help....i havent got a clue how it started,,but shes a hoon..she gets over enthusiatic whenever somebody walks in the door...as soon as i get up to leave..she goes ballistic, its almost like she doesnt want me to leave...last time she nipped my trousers and made a leap for my handbag.
👍
We have the same beard.
Brill video as always will. Get so much advice from your videos. I recently got a herm sprenger prong for my gsd and the difference in her walking is completely better even if she walks away she realises straight away and back to a heel. Thanks for your help
Well you wouldcbehave aswell with a prong around your throat
As soon as you put a sliplead on my dog he tries chewing it :/
I also have an exteremly reactive rescue dog with the same background.
Thank you!
Great video, awesome accent. Lol.
the person who owned my dog before me let him get away with so much, but I don't and he still isn't good like this 😭 the way y'all do it makes it seem so easy lol I do literally all of these things.
