  • In Mexico there is a tradition known as “The Dance of the Pascolas and the Deer”, a ritual of pre-Hispanic origin of the indigenous Yaquis and Mayos, who inhabit the states of Sonora and Sinaloa.
The Dance of the Pascolas and the Deer is a ritual that has been practiced for over 300 years as a call for rain to the gods, and is studied by specialists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), who are currently working on the creation of a file in order to include this practice on the Tentative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
José Luis Moctezuma, an anthropologist working at the INAH Center in Sonora, explained via communiqué that, according to the vision of the indigenous communities, the pascolas (the elders of the party) were malignant beings, children of the devil. However, God won them in a game. The deer, on the other hand, represents good.
