The best use-case for a moonphase watch is whenever someone sees weird behaviour and says 'must be a full moon tonight' you can smugly look at your watch an say 'nope'. I definitely couldn't square away having that large of a complication that would always be wrong though.
I couldn't agree more. Amateur astronomers (like me, on and off) probably have a pretty good idea what the moon phase is anyway, but I could see that community as a customer base for moon phase watches of any sort, and adjusting the phase twice monthly isn't appealing. It probably doesn't matter so much if this isn't a daily wear watch, since one would be resetting it anyway after it ran out of power on the shelf, but it would be nice to be able to put it on a watch winder without worrying about the moon phase being wrong the next time putting it on. That's the whole point of a watch winder in the first place, after all.
I would buy this for my grandson. He likes looking up at the night sky and is becoming interested in watches. I suppose I am saying there are many reasons watches get bought and not all those reasons revolve around me.
@@gary-pv8vz buy your grandson one where the moonphase actually works rather than this one that is just decorative. I gave my newphew a casio with a moonphase for the same reasons and he loved being able to follow the phases on it.
A true Moon phase watch would actually be useful for those of us that have amateur astronomy as a hobby, The Moon's light is anathema to observing or photographing much else. Some other nighttime outdoor activities can benefit from moonlight as well. (On a somewhat related topic, for those who also say a chronograph complication is useless, I use mine to time my tea quite a lot. I also used it before retiring to time my lunch breaks, in order to properly record my time.) Usefulness really depends on the individual.
Agreed. As an occasional-use watch it doesn't matter so much, unless using a watch winder, but a full-time user would find the discrepancy annoying, astronomer or not.
The WM is more a direct copy of the original Christopher Ward C1 Moonglow which preceded the C1 Moonphase and has the semitransparent dial… however that does have both a working moon phase complication and a date complication. The CW does have the five pointed stars (the cheesy ones) pretty much in exactly the same places, but at least it has both of the moons oriented correctly unlike this clone. BTW WM seems to have a number of CW clones on the go (including one of the CW C60 Lynpstone). Who’d have thought a few years ago that there would be AliX knockoffs of CW but here we are… (Cronos/SH are another company starting to make CW clones)
There are other properly accurate moonphase options cheaper than the CW. Citizen's Attesa Lunar line uses some fancypants algorithm - which is probably relatively simple in reality - to calculate the moon phase based on the perpetual calendar setting (or radio setting if you are in a location that receives those signals) and adjusts the moon display correspondingly, rather than just having a set rotating wheel that gradually drifts. There are several that can be had well under $2k; I bought one recently myself and a lovely thing it is too.
I can't get over the feeling that looking at 2 moons is stupid. I would have bought this watch back in the summer if they would do anything but clear on the bottom section. Great video Jody
Jody, your timing here literally could not be better; I was studying this watch just yesterday, trying to figure out whether there was a difference between the strap and bracelet options, deciding between the two colors, etc. I finally decided not to purchase it at this time, and was so glad to find your relevant review. And yes, the five-pointed stars are a bit cheesy, and I could do without those. An aventurine dial would drive up costs a bit, but where else might it look better than here? I wonder, though, given the difference between the strap and bracelet lug holes, why they don't simply drill two holes for greater end user flexibility. I did instead buy one of their Limited Edition Collaboration Series, since I just love the design of all three colors of that watch, despite having your 'favorite' brand name on the dial. Who knows, maybe someday that will make it worth a fortune. 😀
The Moon phase is quite useful for astronomy, astronomical observations and night sky photography. I was looking for a nice watch with the moon phase, but then the smart watches came along in 2011
I don't get, why you should see both moons and why the lume is green. And so I would choose the Sugess moonphase (for nearly the same price) with the aventurine dial, which fits perfect to represent the night sky. Only problems with the Sugess the print of the small moons can be slightly faulty and the lume fades away too soon.
I woke up this morning with that watch on my wrist and have it on as we speak, because I have a weakness for both aventurine dials and moon phase, and I'm very pleased with it. And agreed, Sugess could step up their QC a bit especially re: printing. This watch is pretty good, but under the loupe one would never mistake their pilot chronograph for an expensive watch, with the muddy printing and dial marker alignments. (I still love that watch in the teal blue color scheme, just don't look at it too closely.)🙂
Also a fan of the Sugess Moonphase. A bit more expensive than this but not hugely, and there's something nice about knowing it's a true moon phase and therefore "accurately useless".
My 75 yr old mother recently set her eyes on a moon phase watch and knowing that I am watch collector for the first time said “Som come here “ Look at this watch” it has a beautiful moon on it “ it’s beautiful” everyone knows almost every woman , especially wives and mothers do not support watch addiction. I was happy that something finally after decades caught my sweet Mothers attention was Moonphase . She did have good taste because it was an extremely beautiful Vintage Patek Philippe.
Honestly this watch with a normal date window at 6 and a simple sunburst or matte dial with the current hands and indices would go so hard, especially with the decorated movement for this price.
The Bulova lunar pilot is similar in that the bracelet and strap watches are different and can’t be swapped back and forth. I got the bracelet because Jody said that’s the proper thing to do. Thanks for another great year Jody, can’t wait to see what you have in store for 2025.
The joke at 1:00 requires some explanation for American viewers. Wellingtons are waterproof boots that posh British people wear strolling around on their estates. "Wellies" for short..
@@addisonsteiner6473 Why? Because on a full moon the hospital is full of transformed werewolf waiting for massive blood transfusions? “This damn full moon is making me edematous.”LOL
I got the blue dial with bracelet version for 11/11 sale and swapped the bracelet for a black leather strap. Really love this watch. I don't care much for the accuracy of the moon phase, just love the look of the watch face. 8.5/10 for me.
Meh. I do have a Casio moon phase and tide watch that I use for fishing. I like the appearance of a dress watch with a moon phase complication. Hmm. Casio has that too.
Hopefully they improved their QC. I bought one early on and the moon phase wouldn’t work, sent me another one and it wouldn’t stay running. Sent them both back for a refund. Haven’t bought any of their products since
Living in a coastal city with tidal flooding in the streets, I might get more use from a moonphase than a GMT - or even a diver. I have been looking for a moonphase watch, but this one is not for me. As pointed out, it’s on the larger side and not a true complication. Also, a moon phase may be a rare case where I prefer quartz since it would likely be an occasional wear.
Just a clarification- the WM uses a 31-day cycle for TWO full moon phases, yielding a 15.5 day single cycle (verses the actual 29.5 day cycle). Therefore, the moons on the WM move MUCH faster than actual moonphase.
Jody, your comments on all this Moonphase story are spot on. I’m a « three hand watch » guy through and through, but I quite like the very adequate solution implemented by WM here. I very much doubt the moonphase is accurately set on most mechanical watches which are part of a rotation, since fiddling with these buttons and pushers is not something you want to do in a rush 5 minutes before leaving home on a Monday morning 😅
Eh… if Seiko can replace the SKX with Dive Style Watch (which I like BTW), I’m ok with WM putting out a Moon Phase Style Watch. 😅. Thanks for a great year of content and Happy New Year to everyone!
Is this made in the same factory as yours or something? Trying to think why you aren’t totally caning it. Who drills lugs differently depending on strap choice?
I think Jody uses the same factory as San Martin because the same staff appear in both his tour of the factory for Erebus and promotional material posted from San Martin about their factory…
Watch out for those power reserve claims! I have been testing several of my Chinese watches, with 40-70 power reserve claims that die at under 30 hours. As far as this piece, it’s silly!
10:40 Nope. The night sky is dark, but not actually not black. Check out some astrophotography! I do like a blue dial with a moonphase though. Ala JLC, Longines and others.
I think a moon phase can look ok on a grandfather clock, but on a wristwatch it just looks crap. It gets even worse when they are using the date function to give it to you incorrectly without giving you the date at all.
Personally, I just don't like when the bracelet holder (? Lug holder? for lack of a better word) is straight out from the case and doesn't follow the shape of the case. It screams dress watch. And that's fine, but it just dictates a lot of the rest of the design. (Example: the Audemars Piguet worn by Bill Murray in Quick Change) That means strictly leather straps and 12,9 is really just too thick because you can't make the watch elegant enough. Just an opinion.
My biggest complaint with this type of watch is that the moonphasse is the main gimmick. If the basis of the watch is off by two+ days a cycle, why does it exist? That is like having a watch based on a 25 hour day. I have a few moonphase watches and like the complication, but this is a solid fail in my eyes.
Suggess makes the best AutoMoonphase (actual) for the money. Often $120ish and an aventurine dial and double-wheel date. P.S. Jody - do you know if anyone has made a decent homage to the Cartier Santos?
Awesome! (& only fair). That means at least one of the moons is in the correct orientation for the southern hemisphere. I miss the "face-in-the-moon" 😮 we see down under in other giant moon face watches...
I didn't even notice that when evaluating this watch yesterday, but as the other comment notes, the Southern Hemisphere might feel differently. Mainly, though, as any amateur astronomer can tell you, images appear upside-down in a Newtonian telescope, so I guess we're used to it.
You got both watches, so you could just swap the movements and dials over to get the black face on the leather strap. Problem solved! I'm surprised you didn't see that.😊 PS Writing from Halifax in the UK where it is claimed the 'Halifax Moon' was invented by Messrs Lister and Ogham (might have the spelling wrong on the latter) in the 18th century. But then, as now, when we have daily weather forecasts almost wherever we look, sticking your head out of a window would give you as much information. So maybe the moonphase speaks to an innate human desire to be assured about the minutiae of the future. So there you go: horology to philosophy in one easy bound. As you say, 'Ay thank you. I'm here all week'
While it's true that a moonphase complication is rather pointless for anyone who is not either an amateur astronomer or a werewolf, an argument could be made that wristwatches in general are obsolete relics of the past, since between our phones, car stereos, smart TV's, computer screens and microwave ovens we are surrounded by timekeeping devices 24 hours a day. We like watches because, well, we like watches. And, as a bit of a space nerd, a moonphase complication itches me where it scratches.😊 Plus, a moonphase looks cool, unlike a 24 hour indicator, which just occupies a subdial that could have been something marginally more useful.
This is nice but sorry I just can't have a moonphase that's not a moonphase! I have one of the Sugess moonphases with the seagull movement. It's lovely. And it was inexpensive. And as far as it being useless..... Well, we all know the truth about mechanical watches....
Speaking of cheesy: the lume was selected by someone who believes the moon is made of green cheese. And with a mechanical movement passing out when allowed to run down, and the 28 day cycle, the owner will have a whole new hobby keeping this trifle of a watch up to date.
