In Waves was also my most anticipated album of the year and I agree this is definitely a 8.5 in my eyes too, but like In Colour it could easily go to a 9 or 9.5 as the years go by. In Colour aged beautifully and this might be the same case cause the more i listen to it the more i like the tracks i didn't really care for like Treat Each Other Right and The Feeling I get from you.
It’s a really solid album in my opinion. I’ve only listened to it twice but it really grew on me on my second listen, due to how well the album flowed together. Great review and I loved the edit at the end lol
Just listened to this album on my commute home today, and was pleasantly impressed. The last track was a lot more significant for me because the spoken word is a rewrite of Carl Sagan's legendary "pale blue dot" monologue, which accompanies the titular photo from _Voyager 1_ at the edge of the solar system, showing the Earth as a speck in a sunbeam. IMO it's one of the most important photos ever taken, and Sagan's writing some of the most important ever written, so hearing a rave-oriented remix of that helped the track hit a solidly emotional note that wasn't corny at all.
Got the pleasure of seeing Jamie at portola festival this year and hearing and seeing Jamie’s vision for In Waves was spectacular and I can safely say he brought the house down with this one no pun intended, All You Children live was a religious experience, I will say that Cascade will be my AOTY and I got the honor of seeing Floating Points at that fest too, this record holds a special place in my heart for real, made me fall head over heels for house music again
Pretty much agreed with you almost the whole way through the record, am so happy that you enjoyed it so thoroughly 😊 baddy on the floor and life are definitely going down as the highlights of the year for me; dafodil is such a unique track that either makes me squint and stop in my tracks or gets me into the groove right away; treat each other right and breather are also fantastic tracks in their own right. Even my least favourite track in the feeling I get from you is decent enough ^^; Also very curious to see if this will age like wine the same way In Colour has, but for now just very glad to hear new Jamie xx material and for it to be as well-produced and creative and excellent as I’d expect it to be. Great review as always!
Five minutes into the video I had to start covering the right side of the screen with my hand because the album cover was burning into my eyes lmao. The only cover I’ve seen that actively hurts to look at to this extent is Merzbow’s Pulse Demon, which has a pretty striking resemblance. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jamie took inspiration from that cover for this one.
I imagine its less unpleasant to look at a physical copy but yeah, I'm having a real hard time looking at it on the computer screen. It got me feeling like Jamie should be making harsher music if he wants to use these kinds of antagonistic aesthetics!
@@brobzoid tbh as the initial 22 seconds of this video might imply, looking at a physical copy of In Waves isn't actually any easier on the eyes than looking at it on a computer screen. the effect is pretty much the exact same (there is however a clear difference with Magic Oneohtrix Point Never which is both easier to look at in person and much harder to look at on a screen than In Waves imo, idk why that is)
This was probably the first more house-centric electronic album I ever listened to. Interesting stuff...I want to check out the rest of his discography now.
yeah, this is nearly on par with In Colour for me and I feel like he pretty much cemented himself onto the Burial level of UK Garage legend with this one. I think this one used a few more vocal samples and went for trippier aesthetic whereas In Colour felt more synth heavy, feeling more melodic and I bring this up to say I think both album titles somehow describe the sound of its album quite well. I think In Waves is my current electronic AOTY but we'll see if it holds up by Christmas (sorry if I just threw out the same thoughts as you, I haven't had a chance to watch this review yet but I promise I'll get there lol)
Mostly not a fan of the lyrics of the last track, but i might've also understood them wrong based on your summary... I relistened to In Colour before this, and I enjoyed it substantially more than when i first heard it a few years ago, with some easy amazing tracks, but I can't quite say i properly love it nor In Waves. I think i will try to put the former on more, but I don't feel as much of a drive to give this one more as of right now. But maybe i just need to listen to it more for it to click and it's as simple as that, which might actually be the case since it sounds like you had a similar first impression experience. And interestingly my favorites on this album are similar to your list, so maybe it really does just need a few more chances for me
Ik you don’t usually cover them on this channel, but I’m honestly curious as to what your thoughts are on Coldplay’s Moon Music album. Ngl it kinda sounds the album from them that’s closest to your wheelhouse in some areas. Plus I remember your saying good things about Mylo Xyloto in the past
it is nowhere remotely close to being in the same tier for me as Mylo Xyloto, but I did in fact think it was pretty nice, a step up from their last one at the very least even if not necessarily a major step up. first half was pretty weak & often cringey (aside from the intro) but they pull it together with more interesting & likeable ideas in the second half I feel like there's a potentially really strong single album if I just take my favorite moments from this and Music Of The Spheres
I don't know, this album, jon hopkins ritual, floating points, tycho, washed out all these new ze best '24 albums failed to impess me somehow 😢 oneheart, tourist, helios, teen daze, ebtg, London grammar, syntwave: midnight, timecop, kalax, gunship, fm-84, mn84 were my go to music lately 🎵 🎶
Electronic music (in my personal opinion) has been in a recession quality wise since about 2020, something happened during the pandemic that made things a bit more dull idk

Listened couple of times, It gets better and better

this and the cover art to magic opn legit hurt my eyes to look at

First review where the wonky angle was actually on the right hand side of the screen for a change
?
Caught Jamie xx at Electric Forest last year. Was a good time ✌️
Moire effect going crazy on the album cover from my notification.

I agree with that first part.

I literally searched up if this review existed yesterday before it was uploaded having no idea 😂
