That's why I like riding my motorcycles up mountains the best. You can really get on the throttle in a way that would be more irresponsible and dangerous anywhere else.
I’m personally more impressed with the in-car videos of historic cars driven to the limit on circuits wheel to wheel with competitive grids. Robbert’s two videos with the GT40 and 962 at SPA are prime examples. If this 908/3 was filmed racing on a circuit similarly, you’d see a good comparison
A friend of mine owned a Porsche 917 back in the 80's. The sound of that engine winding out thru the gears was beyond what any mere words that could describe it. When I asked my friend what he thought of that magnificent sound, his response was. It's the sound of music!!
Makes you wonder if some Frankenstein VW or Subaru twin-4-cylinders exist. Some people made V8s out of two Hayabusa engines, some stack Mazda rotaries to four or more rotors...
@@6rimR3ap3rThere was a guy in the AlfaBB forum, that had started a project to make a flat 8 from two Alfa boxers , too bad that there's no recent update.
Reminds me on my childhood..saw these cars and the first 917 s live. What an unforgettable experience. A simple , light car, nearly like a kart. Must be very upsetting to be a driver of this vehicle. Love it. Great Video!
What a treat! Thank you. The 908/03 has always been one of my favorite racecars. Saw it last year for the first time alive warming up in the paddock. And seeing it racing afterwards was special. Such a great looking and quick lightweight 70's racecar.
Had to respond with a big "agree." Like a lot of guys I grew up in the era of the 917 and held that as the pinnacle of race cars. But the more I learned about the 908 the more I understood that when the two meet in the paddock, the 908 can be heard saying to the 917 "Yes Luke, I AM your father."
OMG THE SOUND!!! Edit: what the hell youtube? This channel should have millions of subscribers and views. Insane how such quality can get seemingly missed.
Before your videos I could never truly understand what it must be like to drive cars like these. It’s hard to explain but your videos immerse me like no other. It’s incredible. All that’s missing is HDR and perhaps 60 fps and they would be complete.
Robert is my new number 1 go to race car youtuber... And that's coming from someone who is a fan of Bozzy1982, Mr. M and many other car content creators like Haggerty and such... Phenomenal content this channel 😍
As a Finn brings back memories of Leo Kinnunen when he did the mind blowing Targa Florio lap record of 33m:36s on 72km track that still stands. Talk about balls of steel. 💪
To 908/3 is one of my favorite classic racing cars. It's just build for purpose for twisty road tracks like this. That flat 8 is also so unique and that gulf livery just is the icing on the cake. I bet it is super scary to drive full tilt though. Your feet are basically the crumple zone if anything goes wrong and the short wheelbase makes it super twitchy. Epic.
So true mate! Check out the old Targa Florio footage, Elford, Siffert, Rodriguex et, al. 908/3 the ultimate 'road' racing weapon from a time when sex was safe and motor racing dangerous!
Thats a nice hill climb with some really cool cars. I drove there from Denmark in 2022 and spectated it with my 10 year old son. And I drove the pass in my Alfa 159 as well. (The new one unfortunately) That was a really nice trip!
And yet this car based on the hill climb 909 was the JW/Salzburg/Martini choice for circuits requiring better handling and used on the Targa and Nurburgring rather than the poor handling 917. Privateer 908/3's ran at Le Mans as late as 1976 as well...
Even though the 917 was the big hero in the 70s, the 908 was my favorite, just look how tiny it’s is, and it weighs nothing and I think it had a flat 8, what a rally and hill climb sled, definitely one of the coolest Porsches ever made, IMHO
I could watch this for an hour.... much tighter feedback than Gran Turismo, etc. You can feel how easily the car slips and how instantly you need to adjust but not over correct. Maximum focus. Love it.

Power: Between 270 and 350hp depending on if the flat 6 or the flat 8 is in this chassis. But to achieve that weight this thing had a chassis with very thin tubes (like all racecars back then, but Porsche was king at this. Even the 917 tubeframe can be picked up by one person with (relative) ease).
