@@authorwilliamfripp6522 no sir you won’t! They are probably the most original band. There are so many times I’ll hear a song and think “sounds familiar I could’ve sworn I heard something close to that before” but never with King Crimson!
Starless is like the blues of progressive music. And for me one of the best songs of the previous century, landmark. In this version Bruford's drumming is pure awesomeness.
Remember this was before the "Red" album so fans didn't know this song ! And with the Red album all the Saxes were added, I like this earlier Live version done on their many Live cuts 👍🎶🎸🥁🎹🎸🎻🎼✌
Don't forget about David Cross. This line-up lost a lot of its uniqueness when he left; he's on this recording. And the best improvisational band of all time was the Grateful Dead.
Agreed. Both on best Crim lineup (although I'd add Jamie Muir), and best improv band. BIG difference between a band that can improv and a jam band like the Dead.
That´s your opinion. The band played excellently, but the spirit of King Crimson was gone. Jakko is a great singer but too entertaining for my taste. Starless requires John Wetton. 3 drummers was nonsense.
An inmortal masterpiece, the most representative song of kc quality, as would be comfortably numb, firth of fifth and heart of the sunrise for pf, genesis and yes. This version is previous than the included in red, so it is interesting to see the changes they added to the final version. Thanks for sharing!
Oh my... I needed to find this. John Wetton´s voice and his bass playing is second to none. Man, this just explodes in your brain.. Bill outdid himself right here... You know now why he left Yes without a smirk... this is so, so much more 😍 Demanding and rewarding... I think he could never be happier.
David Cross does an entire CD on this theme combined with Robert’s seperately recorded Starless related soundscapes called Starless Sunlight. It’s quite beautiful.❤
I have loved Crimson since I heard them on Discipline (I think it was 1987 for me), then I saw them on the Thrak tour-incredible! But somehow I missed this song, now my favorite, until I saw the film Mandy (which is a whole other rant). This song and lineup are brilliant. No slouches play drums for them ever, but Buford is the man!! Also agree with the earlier comment on Wetton’s voice, so perfect for this song. For me, this song hits me with the force of an emotional hurricane. Especially at 10:30 when it all comes back around.
I was lucky enough to stumble across them on the Discipline tour: they played my college gym when I was a freshman on Halloween, I bought a ticket with my roommate without knowing who they were at all, but we weren't invited to any parties and thought it'd be a good way to spend the evening; possibly the best $5 I've ever spent. I managed to miss the Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair tours - I think both times when they played the city I was in for college I was away (maybe at home for a break?), so I had to wait for Thrak to see them again with a (now) long-time friend and fellow Crimso. And since then, I've been lucky enough to have seen those four in all kinds of different configurations: Adrian solo (he also played my college twice, for the Lone Rhino and Twang Bar King tours, and pretty much every solo tour since), with The Bears, with David Bowie (Sound + Vision tour), and the Power Trio; Bill on the ABWH tour and the Yes Union tour; Tony with California Guitar Trio and ABWH; and Robert with the League Of Crafty Guitarists. While almost all KC albums are really good, I think Red is my favorite.
Yo la primera vez que los escuché fue en 1978 y me impactaron y lo siguen haciendo hasta ahora. Esta versión no lo había escuchado, es increíble y creo que mejor que la actual.
KC is a brilliant reflection of an era. It’s a phantom asteroid who returns to set his sights on sound art. A stupendous wave laden with paradoxes from which obscurantism and the irrational escape, hypnotic factors defying vulnerable souls in search of the infinity. Their musical architecture is a translucid and short tunnel that leads to light
@Benjiroyoface this says it was recorded in March 74, and they recorded Red in July 74 (after David Cross had been sacked). Red was released in October 74, right after Fripp had killed KC off for the first time.
@@AP-sd1flThats a misconstruesion of why KC ended up having 3 drummers from 2013-2021. The history of having multiple drummers in KC predates Bruford's departure in the band. The early Larks' Tongues Line-up feature Bill and Jamie, the Discipline sometimes saw Adrian Belew on a drumkit alongside Bill, and the Double Trio era saw Bill and Pat as the drummers. The 2000-2003 era of band actually only had Pat Mastelotto on drums. Fripp didn't want 3 drummers to make up for the loss of Bruford, all of KC's drummer at that point were beyond qualified to play Bruford parts.
Yeah, I'm not one for gushing in the comments usually (waaayyyy too much of that shit on yt as it is); nevertheless, I do find myself getting a bit emotional every time I hear this song, especially a new live version I've never heard before... A lot of Fripp's stuff tugs at that string in my brain that's attached to the soundtrack of my dreaming.
We have a new tune we would like to perform for you, an instrumental we call “Starless and Bible Black” but first, a little dittie called Starless with lyrics that end with Starless and Bible Black. Guy in front row asks “Who’s on first?”
Fun scenario. Clarification just incase anyone thinks the song "Starless and Bible Black" was ever in the King Crimson setlist, it was improvised live on stage, just another "improv". The reason it features on the album "Starless and Bible Black" is because one of the main parts of that album is that half of it was composed of improv recorded live on stage. The album "Starless and Bible Black" is atleast 4/5 a live album in disguise, not much of it was made in a studio.
The name Starless is of course borrowed from the poet Dylan Thomas, but I would like to point out that the French poet Maurice Blanchot also has the term Désastre, in English: starless.
This was my favorite KC lineup which for me is saying a lot because they were all great in their own way and style. Nobody can do the vocals on this song and do it justice as John Wetton did. RIP John.
Great! But wtf is Wetton doing with the lyrics though? Ice blue silver shweid go through my eyes/ with our eyes still bleh to be? Starless and Bible black/ Old friend Golderold cool twisted smile/ shiv for dee hee hee hee to be... the man is clearly on drugs!

Buford, Fripp & Wetton are all musical geniuses! I count myself lucky to have heard them in their primes!
