I can still hear my late mother laughing at 4 every Saturday watching the wrestling, oh these were magic days world of sport gave us so much entertainment, RIP Dickie
Kendo Nagasaki, Dynamite Kid, Mick McManus, The Royle Brothers, Giant Haystacks, Adrian Street, Big Daddy, names that bring back fond memories of the 70s, world of sport with Dickie Davies. These matches, were on just before the day's, sports, results. This is when TV was innocent, informative, and varied. Halcyon Days.
Lovely to be reminded of these great wrestlers. You missed off Jackie Pallo though. Diddy David Hamilton, tells the story of when he was put in the ring with Jackie. The producer said not to worry, as it's all fake. He soon found different 😂
My first introduction to British wrestling from days gone. I really like it. Funny and entertaining without making a mockery of the sport. I just love the patience everyone their has. Instant gratification is not always better.
As a kid in the early 70s I use to watch world of sport with mum and brother. We loved the wrestling, mum thought les was great as he always made us laugh. Thank's for sharing I'm.over 60 now times were hard but they were the best times unlike now.
Really Kellett was a great wrestler but it was more of a comedy routine in a holiday camp than a wrestling match with all of those "face" nice guys I preferred the "heel" bad boys who wound up the crowds and the old dears down the front trying to hit them sometimes with their bags and brollies when a golden boy like Vic Faulkner or Steve Veidor were taking a "pounding" no one ever really got hurt did they apart from Mal Kirk and Masambula they had very unfortunate accidents.
Always went to see my gran on a Saturday afternoon, took her a bottle of mans brown ale and we'd watch the wrestling, she used to quite excited, les Kellet was her favourite.
Like most people, I sat with my dad to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoon, Les Kellet was my dad's favourite, along with Bert Royal. But he hated Mick McManus, and Jackie Pallo, I liked Catweazle and Kendo Nagasaki, because I liked his gimmick, and his eventual unmasking. During the bouts, the teleprinter was giving the football latest results at the bottom of the screen. But I mainly liked it because I got to spend time with my dad.
My mom and neighbor who was her closest friend would watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoon in the sixties and Les was their favourite , there would be tears of laughter, happy days
Bad boy Bobby Barnes always reminds me of Freddy Star when he used to do his camp act hahaha Boy were we entertained back then by these great men. Thanks.
He trained my mate. I wrestled that guy like 37 times and we were at a dojo three times a week. After a month in Yorkshire he came back and I swear down I didn't ever see the same trick from him twice. Les taught him to land on his forearms and make it look like he went head first. Skull Murphy, despite his popularity with yobs of the day was actually a policeman. 😂
I was born in 97 never saw any of this but my family as always been into wrestling and always speak on WoS and 70’s 80’s wrestling fondly so decided to watch some of what I can find and I’m so glad I have been because they’re real treats
Bobby Barnes sat on my wife’s lap when she was eight months pregnant sat in the front row at Southampton guildhall watching him and Adrian Street they were my all time favourites

This takes me back a few years me and my late dad watching Saturday lunchtime wrestling.. Thanks for post these and for bringing back some happy memories :)
All our dads thought it was real. TV was still a sense of wonder & to be believed. Us young men were more cynical & we knew it was a show. After WW2 they'd seen real 'real' & wanted just simple fun. God bless them.

@michael quirk That's very true my friend. It is, unfortunately only later in life that we fully appreciate the love, values and life lessons they give to us.I know it's a cliche but if only I knew then what I know now.

This is definitely the golden age of British Wrestling. Les was from Bradford and he lived just up the road from where i grew up. There will never be anybody quite like Les again. This bout was filmed at St George's Hall Bradford city centre. Les lived in Thornton village and he had a cafe with his wife and son

BBC 1 had the tv scrambles on. But if they overrun. By 4.oclock my dad turned the tv over to itv to watch this wrestling. Then the wrestling stopped at 4.40 pm for the football results. But as you say happy days
Saturday afternoons was all about wrestling and absolute entertainment. Mick McManus, Catweazle, Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Pat Roach, Brian Glover, Jackie Pallo, Davey Boy Smith, Kendo Nagasaki, Harvey Smith, Masambula and Tony St Clair. choreographed fun for all the family especially your gran.
So what did us schoolkids do on a Saturday when it was pissing down with rain ? We watched the wrestling , Les Kellet , Mick McManus , Giant Haystacks ,Big Daddy · Billy Robinson · Bruno Erlington · Count Bartelli · Geoff Portz and many more
This takes me back. When I was a young lad I used to watch these blokes on TV. Les Kellett, Mick McManus, TV Jackie Pallo, Bert Royal and Vic Faulkner - The Royal Brothers, The Black Diamonds. One of my teachers used to work in the dressing room when they visited Leamington Spa. He told us how the wrestlers discussed who was going to win each bout and what moves they were going to make. The famous wrestlers always beat the up and coming, but it wasn't so cut and dried when both contestants were equally famous. I think Mick and Les took turns to win, Les, Bert and Mick always beat Jackie Pallo, and Mick would always beat Vic. It's only watching this bout now, that I can see just how false it really was. Old birds in the audience whacking the "villains of the ring" with their handbags. Such was the entertainment in the 60's.
Les kellet. In real life he was a hard bastard. Mean and horrible. He didn't suffer fools , but what a transformation in the ring. People never upset him or hellfire would follow. A truly wonderful character.
Oh god, I'd forgotten all about Saturday afternoon wrestling. Respect to these guys as they could throw themselves around like crazy, but it was more choreographed than any 'Strictly Come Dancing'. Pure charade.
Les Kellett was a major influence on current day Jon Moxley - Mox used to do the rebound rope move when he wrestled as Dean Ambrose in WWE - he got that from Kellett
Les Kellet one of the strongest men I ever knew, I recall him physically picking a car up after it had slipped off the ramps and placed the car back on the ramps. His eldest son was also a wrestler, wrestled under the name of Dave Berry.. Les was a very quick driver, and I had quite a few white knuckle rides, whilst being with him and his second son Chris; driving to the Winter Gardens as Les was running late. He and his wife ran a cafe at the bus terminal in Thornton Bradford. Chris and I were best mates at school. Les treated me like his son, he wanted both Chris and I to become wrestlers but both our career paths took different directions. Les was tee total but always tolerated his wife who wasn’t. She was extremely fond of Harvey’s Bristol Cream Sherry. He was a consummate entertainer.
watched it every week with my dad. our wrestleing declined in the uk. because the promoters who made the money spent it on fancy holidays cars ect.they never put anything back into it.the wrestleing in the a USA was well behind us they plaughed tons on money back into there sport.makeing it the mutli million pound industry it is today. thats what marc rollerball rocco said
They ruined it with Big Daddy. It just got ridiculous and people turned against it and in the end it was pulled from TV. I felt sorry for the guys who really could wrestle, they were badly let down by the Crabtrees.
Ohhh brilliant...My Mum used to shout out in the living room and bang the TV when a player was breaking the rules...World of Sport on Saturday's in the 70's - The legendary Kent Walton (RIP) commentating too, Great times :)
