Just decided something that you might enjoy, I’ve decided to model SP but with a twist! It’s still around. The UP and SP merger never happens on this layout, and the railroad works alongside CN, UP, and BNSF. I will be making custom locomotives such as a sd70Ace in the SP speed lettering
That sounds cool. What-if scenarios can be great themes for a model railroad, especially if it's SP (I might be slightly biased there). Thanks for watching!
Very impressive dash 9 model from Athearn Genesis, the GE dash 9 is a very popular freight locomotive and this Genesis series model is fantastic. Athearn has really improved their locomotive detail features and their lighting over the past 5 years and hopefully Athearn will continue producing more great quality locomotive models such as this dash 9 model, excellent product review- Tom.
I'm glad you liked the review. This is a nice model. If you haven't already seen it I also did a comparison review with the Athearn, Kato and ScaleTrains C44-9Ws. Thanks for watching!
Wow the contacts between the chassis and body for lights is a big surprise from Athearn - The bundle of wires on previous models is such a hassle as I'm always breaking them or pulling out bulbs from sockets.
I've seen a few manufacturers doing this now. It definitely makes it easier to take apart, not having to worry about wires. I know when I do my own installs I usually end up with a ton of wires, especially models that have a lot of lights. Once I get them assembled, I don't take them apart again unless they need some kind of repair. The only down side is that sometimes the contacts don't touch and then a light won't work. Sometimes pressing down on the shell a little will fix it. Thanks for watching!
I just bought my first Union Pacific #3450 which is sd40 according to google it does have the sound of horn and engine start which I love even though I’m only DC for now but enjoying the hobby a ton. Just wish u could find a Ny and atlantic locomotive
I have a relationship with 8135. Rode the prototype with a crew I knew out of Roseville in the late 90s. I forget where we were going, but, I do remember how comfortable the ride in the cab of a C44-9W is. While I prefer offerings from EMD, the Dash 9 has a decent cab and you don't really hear the prime mover making noise outside of briefly when notching up or notching down. Great review, Dan!
That sounds like a really cool experience. I am sure a lot of people (myself included) wish they could have done something like that. I'm glad you liked the review. Thanks for sharing the story and for watching!
Great review. I have two NS models and the details are fantastic. One is quiet in both directions and the other is noisy in one direction. About 30% of my Genesis locos have noise issues. 0% of my ScaleTrains locos have noise issues. I still like both manufacturers.
Thanks for the info about your models. This is the first Genesis of mine that I can recall being this noisy. I will take a look at it more when I get around to installing DCC. Thanks for watching!
I love modeling and weathering the old blue box ones, and I buy them when I find them for cheap at the train show. These are leaps and bounds better than the old ones are. I like the pin contacts and I will be looking on their website to see if they sell those. Thanks for the review!
I just sold off a couple old blue box Dash 9s I had. They can be made into nice models, but I just have too many projects. I'm not sure if the pin contacts are available separately from Athearn. It just occurred to me that they might be something that could be sourced from electronics suppliers. I haven't looked into it, but they look like something that could have other uses beyond the model train hobby. Thanks for watching!
Great review Dan! I know SP had both AC4400CWs and Dash 9s before merging with UP, although I often confuse both units. But aside from that, your model is well detailed and the paint looks good!
The AC4400CWs and C44-9Ws look a lot alike. The main visual difference is the big inverter cabinet on the engineer's side behind the cab. SP's ACs also had 3-digit numbers when delivered. I have some of the ScaleTrains SP AC4400CWs on pre-order, and I'll be doing a review when they get here. Thanks for watching!
@4:44, you say (paraphrasing) that there's a little bit more noise with modern models than I'm used to, reminding me of the old Athearn Blue Box growl. (BTW, I don't want to have to "mask" cheap motors with sound.) A few years ago, I bought a high-dollar Switcher from Atlas that growls worse than "an old Athearn blue box locomotive". After being misdirected by the repair people at Atlas TWICE, the good folks at Yankee Dabbler finally gave me the correct diagnosis. Yankee Dabbler said Atlas has started using cheap motors in their locomotives. I recently ordered an Athearn Genesis locomotive (now in transit) from Model Train Stuff. If it too growls like "an old Athearn Blue-box locomotive"--like the Atlas Switcher I ordered a few years ago--I'm sending the Athearn Genesis back immediately! I will be double-dog damned if I am going to pay $100s of dollars for a locomotive that sounds crappy! I think it's CRAZY for model rr companies to start cheapening their products only to sell them for such exorbitant prices. You seem to be able to afford buy what ever you like when ever you like. Do you think I'm wrong, or over reacting? Do you like paying top dollar for locomotives that sound like cheap junk? I would truly value your opinion and perspective Dan, and your other views' perspective as well, about this issue. And on a related note: It may be time to do a series of videos on how to clean and restore old blue box locomotives, to make them run again. If the NEW locos are going to sound like the OLD blue box locos, I might as well stop trying to find quiet-running locomotives and use the old noisy ones. Anyway, as you see, you've touched a hot-button issue in my brain. I hope you can help me, Dan. I'd rather spend my limited resources on model train stuff than psychotherapy.🤐
I totally understand. It's disappointing to pay high dollar prices for today's models only to discover that they have issues right out of the box. I have not had your experience with Atlas, though I can't recall that I've bought any Atlas locomotives recently. I have a lot of them, but most of them are probably at least 5 years old or older. They're all quiet. Even with Athearn, I have to say that for me, this locomotive was unusual in that regard. I have plenty of other newer Athearn models that don't sound like this. I'm hoping it's a fluke. It is concerning to hear that they are using cheaper components. I still have a blue box GP40-2 and at least one SD40-2 that I need to build, so maybe a blue box build would be something I could try in the future. Mine are all undecorated projects. I don't think I still have any that even have their stock motors. If you want a detailed Dash-9 model that has a lot of detail and no noise issues, you might want to check out ScaleTrains. I've reviewed several of those so far. Thanks for watching!

I have repowered a few Athearn BB locos, over the years, with good can motors, & the first thing that is apparent, is that they do run quieter, especially if I use the hex drives, which I try to use. I dont think the RTR motors are USUALLY noisey, but sometimes, yes.
@@michaelcudby787 Thank you so much for the info and advice you offer, Mr. Cudby. It sounds solid to me. I will certainly consider the option of a good quality can motor at length. I appreciate your time and effort, sir.
@@DanielCortopassi Hi Dan, upon rereading your response to my comment, I realized that you referred to a lot of info about loco models that I did not thank you for properly. Thank you for the info and your patience.
I definitely saw a review of the Athearn SP Dash 9 coming, well done! When it comes to sound installations, many modelers usually recommend sugar cube designs that drop into the rear weight area such as the Bowser 1291, Athearn 85111, Scale Sound Systems AHGS-UNI-RC1, or two ESU 50321s with the correct enclosure. I think you can’t go wrong with either of those designs, hoping to see how the DCC and sound installation goes!
I am thinking of using this for a future DCC Shop episode. I got the DCC ready version because I prefer Loksound decoders and didn't want to pay for a Tsunami just to take it out. I'll have to check out the speaker options. Thanks for the suggestions and for watching!
@@DanielCortopassi of course, my pleasure. Super easy installation that requires minimal effort besides removing the stock rear weight and dummy plug; as well as soldering the speaker wires to the motherboard.
Nice review. I've picked up several Athearn SD40-2's in the last few months and nearly all of them have the same sloppy window installations, they could definitely do better in this regard!
I have noticed that on some models. I have mixed feelings about the sliding cab windows on some Athearn EMD units. It's nice in some ways, but also annoying because the windows tend to move around on their own. I often end up putting a dab of glue to keep them still. Anyway, I'm glad you liked the review. Thanks for watching!
Great review. I have the SP #8107 and ATSF #627 with sound. They are flawless. I did change the CV for the ground lights and number board. $265 @ Lombard hobbies.
I am thinking of doing a comparison review in the near future. I have SP versions from both companies now, but I haven't had them out on the workbench at the same time yet. They're both nice looking models. The Athearn noise is a little concerning, but it runs well. I haven't had any issues with the running qualities of any of my ScaleTrains locomotives, though I don't have my layout built yet, so my ability to test them "out on the road", so to speak, is limited. Thanks for watching!
The model has a 21 pin dummy plug so the easiest thing would be to get a 21 pin decoder. If I was going to go that route, I'd get the 21 pin version of the Loksound 5 DCC. Thanks for watching!
Great review as usual Dan! What is it about Athearn and the motor noise. Is it the motor or gear tower or combination? I stay away from Athearn as much as possible because of this, but occasionally I will pick one up. My two Athearn SD90MAC-H Phase II are very quiet, by my other Athearns are medium to high in the motor/gear noise area.
This one is noisier than any of the other modern Athearn models that I have. I'm not really sure what's going on. With the old blue box models, driveshaft vibration was a factor, but it could be minimized with some fiddling. I haven't run this one without the shell so see if there's anything like that happening. Thanks for watching!
@@DanielCortopassi Thanks Dan! Please make a video of your fix if you find one for this unit or any other Athearn you have. I remember one video where someone put in thrust washers (not sure if I heard the word correctly) and it minimized the play in the shaft.
If one was to remove the rear weight and replace it with a suitable speaker enclosure would they draw bar pull be affected by the weight difference? Good review here. I really dig the contact pad to eliminate the rats nest of wiring for the lights.
I'd have to repeat the drawbar pull test with the weight removed to say for certain. The rear weight is small compared to the overall size of the locomotive frame, so I would expect that it wouldn't hurt the pulling power too much. Maybe when I do the DCC install on this one I'll repeat the test after and we can take a look at the numbers. Thanks for watching!
Very cool locomotive Dan! I saw they're doing the BNSF versions from the late 90s without the lettering or trim in the next run, which is awesome, I remember those units well! Still wished they would use metal couplers, either develop their own brand or use Kadees on these high end models though.
I'll have to watch for the BNSF version. I wish everyone would just use Kadees. I've had too many plastic couplers deform under load and let go. Thanks for watching!
