Coming from a family of Pinoy farmers, I really like the analysis of our machete types that you demonstrate in this video. You weigh the pros and cons of each type clearly with a objective view to discern a machete that will ultimately suit your needs the best, a mentality treasured by my people for it's efficiency in effort and use of simple reasoning. Good job

Hello I came from the Philippines and now working abroad. I appreciate this video cause it brings back some memories. I am not farmer but I got relatives and friends that are farmers. I'm just wondering if you got a "tuguegarao" bolo. Tuguegarao, is the capital of Cagayan Region II Philippines. It was a famous kind of Bolo in our place. It was most trusted by our locals. You can see at near handle engraved the word "tuguegarao". Also do you also got an ILOCOS kind. Ilocos is a province which other farmers like it because of it light weight and because of unique handle. We called it the Mac Arthur because of the grip. which has the figure head of Gen. Mac Arthur. There are also from Ifugao with has a wide round tip. Some say it is good for cutting down tall grasses. There are bolos who can split a coin in a half too, without destroying it's blade. :D Nice Post Man!..

No, I dont have those bolos u mentioned. I guess its almost impossible to have/know all "bolos" of the philippines. In the beginning I thought a bolo is that typicall Philippino machete (like the 3. and 4. from the left in this video). But ones I started to collect them I realized that every island/region has its own style of bolo and every tribe will have an special style plus the historical ones that have been more like a weapon. It must be hundreds of different styles. I am still collecting ... :)

I prefer the shorter bolo knife. But with a more curved edge for hacking coconuts. Longer blades for Cutting sticks or weapon.

Say Heah. Especially in the Summer I use a Long Knife in my neck of tge woods. My Rucki is prolly my Fav. I also just changed the handles on my Parangatang to Black. I also changed handles on my Potbelly both are Black now. But I also got a Battle Horse Mad Hatter Machete. They had a short run on it. It's made in L6 and it's lite and thin. But I pimped it out. It was modified at B H. I had the spine rounded except a card edge (90°) to scrap with and strike a ferro rod. The edge is Convex but I got a Scandi Grind similar to what Colhane does with his Machete's. I also matched the handle to a White G-10 Handle with Blue Liners it's a perfect match with my Modified Attitude. I posted pictures on my Google Plus. I also designed a couple of Knives that I commissioned William Collins to make. I posted tge unfinished knives so you can get an idea. I will also have White G-10 Handles with Red, White and Blue Liners. Both are made in 3V and both have Choils. Your welcome to l@@k.,,.p

if youre starter on using bolo. you should use the mid size bolo and after having get used to it. you can start using the long one as they are more versatile and its easy to use on cutting small woods.

Interesting to have followed along as you tested different machetes. Do you thino after finding what your specific needs are that you might have a custom machete made? 8th in 1095 steel,16 in long,2.4 blade height, full height lean convex, slight negative angle at the handle? Have to admit, we pinoys love our edged tools.maraming salamat!

I just yesterday bought a bolo in Cebu. It a straight tip like the third from the right. (Looking at the screen.) I plan on using it in my garden at home, not the jungle.

What I say now is an estimation because I have to ask the blacksmith to make one and he will tell me the price. But I would say arround 50 US dollar for fulltang machete with wooden sheath and handle. Plus international shipping, maybe 20 US dollar. What country are you from?

      @MSLBushcraftSurvival  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael,

Ca. 2500 Peso, voll Erl konstuktion dauert länger ab ca. 4000 Peso.
Schau dir mal mein video "Parang Testing" an.

Why tell us about your favorite, if we don't know what your favorite is? I agree with all your points and would add there's a certain balance that makes for the perfect machete. Most are too short, a few are too long, but there's a certain sweet spot where the blade cuts effortlessly. Never found that sweet-spot in a pointy machete, so suspect it's highly profile dependent? Anyway, a few more details about the machete would be helpful? Blade thickness, profile, length, handle, steel-type, etc? I've ground Tramontina's to improve swing weight, so a little more detail (assuming we can't simply order your favorite) would be helpful? Thx.

They all look like local hand foraged machetes, most of the time those aren’t for sale online or anywhere but the local area their made sadly, but it’s still beautiful to see their craftsmanship and functionality. But believe me I wanna get any of those just as bad as you Tom. P.s. MSL bush craft if you buy a bunch of local knives or machetes and sell them on eBay you’ll make a killing, also a lot of us very happy
