The "Defenses are online" event is because you tried to activate something without all the tech. Its one of the army/air force base decisions. As a rule of thumb, don't activate those unless they specifically say you're gonna get something from them otherwise it will just be a waste. I think there are like a handful of exceptions to that, but most of them will immediately tell you whether you're gonna get something or not when you mouse over the decision.
I think each one of them guarantees the same number of factories regardless, but the one-time event upon completion depends on your level of tech like anti-tank. Not sure whether any of the "good results" offer further permanent benefit, but if not then it could be argued that the -50 manpower and -50 equipment is worth the earlier mil factories.

On custom game rules you there’s an option for region unifiers. This makes the game not lag as much. For example if I’m playing in California I usually unify Canada and Nebraska since those places don’t matter to my game. Hope this helps

if you want another religious clan, try Heaven's Gate.
it's super religious and based on steampunk power. you get steam powered dreadnoughts for power armor, holy blades and cludgels, and access to the tenth crusade as a focus. it's also a LOT more simple than new Canaan
or if you want to go on a power trip, go with the troll warren

Heaven's Gate's getting an update, so it's probably not worth playing at the moment.
For a more stable and less laggy game, I either suggest consolidating certain regions of the map you're not gonna reach (say, Texas or east Canada) or use the debug_smooth command that'll make a direct impact on how less laggy it'll be.
Do canada and Nebraska, most places their don't have focus trees so it won't effect much
You can change this in the regional unifiers section of custom game rules
Debug smooth will make it unplayable unless you just sit doing nothing, not so fun for content. The mod has settings for that but because it makes so much change it crashes my PC. More powerfull PC is equşred

All the lag is one of the reasons I can never really play OWB and Kaiserreich. Once you get to late game it turns to molasses.
Equestria at War, love it or hate it, is somehow incredibly well optimized and runs like butter without lag even on older PCs.
I wish the other total conversion mods learned from them, and whatever they did to optimize the game.
Fun Fact: the word deseret actually means honey bee which is why the beehive is the flag symbol then and even now. The beehive was considered a symbol of harmony, cooperation, and work for the early pioneers of the Church.

I'm noticing a trend where Stak will complain about mod performance in almost every mod that isn't Equestria at War
To be fair that is way better optimized
The event of automatic turrets activating had to do with bringing the workshop online. IIRC you can mitigate the negative effects with certain techs
One way to fix the lag for this mod is cutting down on how many micro nations exists and declare war on each other. If you you use the console, you can carve up little nations into a few regional powers. Eliminating the pointless filler raiders tribes will work wonders for your game, where 5 speed will actually feel like 5 speed again.
As someone mentioned using the unifiers help, from the sounds of what happened, just so much war ended up happening in the world this game compared to the last it caused just that much extra amount of lag.

I will say that with the crashes in the previous vid and the monsterous lag in this one the mod dev captured Bugthesda's Fallout experience beautifully. Next to see if file corruption gets added in the next vid in this miniseries.
Have you ever drank Guiness? Well what if Guiness was in hoi4 it would create a grand guiness empire with the Ireland Expanded mod by taking over the entire world.
So, I tried Guiness. For context, while I am Australian, my ancestry is primarily Irish, French, Scottish, and British, so like, ALL of the alcoholism in one Bloodline. Yet despite this, and despite being Australian, I have yet to find a single beer I like. I've tried quite a few, too. In particular, Guiness is the worst I've ever tried, and despite actively trying, I physically couldn't bring myself to finish the can. From Australian Beers to fancy scottish lagers, to Guiness, it's all just disgusting to me. I like Port, Whiskey, Rum, Mead, white wine, though most non-fortified red wines aren't that great to me, I like Long Island Iced Tea, Lychee Daisies, Sambucca, and even Absinthe, and I'm not afraid to experiment and try weird mixes, and I'll try any drink at least once. Still no good beers. Maybe I just don't like beer.

To avoid that lag next time play the original old world blues without all the expansion clans. It runs 50x faster since it has just the original clans from the fallout universe.
I'm really curious what's causing the lag. The last video on this mod didn't have the issue. The MLP mod and the base game all have just as many countries on a far larger map. It seems unlikely to be related to anything like number of units being handled or what have you, the usual source of lag in these games. Anybody know?

So one thing I've noticed about OWB is I need to restart my computer if i start a new game or if im loading a saved game, as it will go to a crawl like this pretty quickly. but after restarting it goes pretty quick again.

You can use the 'region unifier' option on the main menu to reduce the load on your computer.
For those unfamiliar with Fallout:
Quick summary of the world-- in 2077 the US enters a catastrophic nuclear war with China; less than 10% of people in major population centres survive through sheltering in pre-paid vaults. Fallout series takes place about 100 years later when the radiation has reduced to safe-ish levels outside.
The world is essentially a mix of 1) small exclusive factions with access to advanced pre-war, tech, 2) raider groups, 3) a few corrupt governments attempting to emulate pre-war USA, 4) A few independent "vice cities" like New Vegas, 5) Communities of mutants who are victims of the radiation or of peri-war experimental biological tech, sometimes integrating with humans when not rendered mad.
Your man is playing as "New Canaan" which is mentioned heavily in the New Vegas DLC "Honest Hearts" a few years after the start of the OWB mod start-date. Canonically they're conquered/dispersed by the White Legs (the tribe to the south). They're basically a Mormon nation who are evangelical but overall protective towards the other tribes surrounding them. The White Legs want to conquer all of Utah/Deseret because they've been promised membership in Caesar's Legion (the immensely powerful popular boy's club just south of them) if they succeed.
This is my new favorite game series. I should recommend this to the spiffing Brit.

I recommend playing the Enclave reborn sub-mod for OWB, its very fun.
In OWB for some reason some nations are more laggy than others, notably Lost Hills is extremely slow to run as is New Cannan. Iirc all if the countries with unique gui/variable systems are very laggy to play
Please continue with this mod and eventually play as the NCR
I just got to the war with the white legs and when we started fighting most of my troops are holding the line but its all red so i got worried and came here i know if you lose you can still rebuild but i wanted to try and get new canaan in glory
Try the Mojave Brotherhood of Steel they start really small but can expand really quick because they're technologically Superior to everybody in the region except Mr House

Play with Twin Mothers in Very hard and stand against Lanius! She is like the best dark horse/underdog in the mod, super fun.
New Canaan's focuses are condition heavy which would help with the early confusion but that's more of a nitpick.
i HAVE to recommend that you play the enclave reborn submods for this series, it allows you to either follow the enclaves policies from the game or to recreate a legitemate and democratic United States. it is on of the most fleshed out nations you can play with plenty of paths and events to keep it interesting.

For the future, I beleive you can disable states in Mexico to help with game slowdown

Tbh, I'd suggest disabling Legion and NCR at this point as it's their THOUSANDS, yes, thousands, not hundreds, of division, who constantly bash at each other far away from you.

The big potential problem I noticed was that the NCR and Ceaser's Legion went to war and it can be a pain for everyone else
Sometimes I've noticed performance issues with the mod that go away when you restart (not turn off, restart) the computer.

Huh that's quite surprising the mod normally works pretty well
One reason is the massive war in the south between ncr and legion that's when the lag starts in my games
If you want your hoi to go faster you need to restart your computer but not turn it off, for some reason this makes hoi 4 actually work fast again

The lag is potentially from the decimation system, unless you have a beefy PC it'll really slow down your game with a lot of background math
