    Let me know if I'm misunderstanding this. If you are implementing IPSEC between 2 (non-GRE tunnel) interfaces, your only option is crypto map? But if you are implementing IPsec on GRE tunnel (either point to point, or multipoint DMVPN etc), then you have 2 options: crypto map or IPSEC profile, with IPSEC profile being the more efficient/preferred method of configuration?

    This is two different scenarios, with the crypto map, you talk about the actual datagram ipv4 encapsulated by IPSec, the other scenario with profile, you talk about actual datagram ipv4 encapsulated by gre, then encapsulated by the IPSec, they used for the different purposes. believe that gre tunnel with crypto map and gre tunnel with profile will be a good comparison.
