- More than one hundred people were arrested at Columbia University in New York City on Thursday after occupying the school's South Lawn for 30 hours in support of Gaza. Among those arrested was Isra Hirsi, daughter of Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. She had been suspended from neighboring Barnard College and was protesting at Columbia. Hirisi and Maryam Alwan, a fourth year Columbia student who helped organize the protest who was also suspended and arrested, joined MSNBC’s Ayman Mohyeldin to discuss.

Where were the protests when Boko Haram massacred over a hundred Nigerian Christians in church this past Christmas?
How is that relevant to them? They explained specifically the role of the University and its investments and their push for divestment. In that context, the protest makes perfect sense whether you agree or not. As students, they are stakeholders in the University business and have a right to express their opinion.

The difference is that Israel is supposed to be a developed Western-style democracy with rule of law and that many Western countries are supporting and defending Israel. The atrocities that Israel carries out in Gaza are being committed using weapons sold to it by the US and Germany and the US continues to provide Israel with financial aid, as well. So the US is very much complicit in what's happening which means that putting pressure on the US government using protests is far more likely to have a real-world impact on the situation in the case of Gaza than it would in those other cases you've pointed to where the US is less directly involved/responsible. People aren't just protesting because people in a far-away country are dying or suffering. That's awful in and of itself, of course, but in the vast majority of cases protesting unfortunately isn't going to change it. People are protesting in this specific case, however, because their own government is involved in the slaughter.

Not sure this is accurate reporting. The school is a private school on private property, and these people had no right to be there, they were asked to leave, they refused, and so they were arrested. This is a no-brainer.

If you engage in disruptive behavior on campus that calls for your suspension, the school doesn't necessarily have to outline a written code of conduct that was violated. It may not be in written form. They just have to show how you disrupted the normal business of education and the learning process for other students.
