Teij said at the end that there is nothing like it after listening to a pitch and he himself stating there is nothing unique about it and ppl have been doing it for a long time globally.
Most plastic items don't get recycled even when put into recycling. Besides that, every time you recycle plastic it increases the phthalate content which is carcinogenic.
The dragons always go on about the valuation of the business yet are happy to undervalue them. 50k for a third of a business that is on track to make over 500k is crazy low
Thats turnover, net was about 110, plus its just another water bottle manufacturer togo next to countless other water bottles and he has nothing proprietary.
I think the whole point is that they're experienced and connected. The money is peanuts to them either way. You have to think if you want 80% of a million or 50% of 10 million. If one of the investors has enough skin in the game they'll surely put in the work to make the value skyrocket. The matter of being overvalued is that they'll have no interest in owning 5% of something when they're providing value in other forms besides the money.
This is an incomplete story that doesn't add up. How are these bottles any better for the world? They'll clog up landfill like plastic and they'll make a mess of recycling plants when the workers assume they're regular bottles and they all go through the process with the plastics. What about the manufacturing? You have to grow more corn crops that are being removed from the food supply, and you need all the extra resources and water to grow and process the crops through to completed product. Then all your left with is a bottle that can be composted in commercial settings, which will probably only be available with a handful of companies. This bottle is definitely not the answer.
I wish they'd force all keurig cups to be made like this. And then like we have our recycle totes (in the US) we could have compost totes and have a compost area for the city. I live in an upstairs apartment and can't have my own compost pile. So i throw my food scraps with non recycle items in the garbage tote & they all go to landfill. We really gotta figure this garbage thing out. I go to any measure to try & get every recycle item i can in the recycle bin. But our city has said they won't take the keurig cups. Even cleaned & stacked together.
I'm confused about what is unique about the bottle made out of plants but will still end up in a landfill, like other plastic bottles, and the unique selling point is that it can be refilled, and not everyone is keen on refilling a drinking water bottle.
So it's a recyclable bottle that can't be recycled in a recycle bin but it's selling point it can be reused, much like a regular plastic water bottle which can be recycled in a recycle bin
This bottle decomposes, the material used in the bottle most likely will last around 20 years before it's completely gone, whereas plastic bottles last for 1000 of years
I mean I just reuse a plastic bottle about 100 times before I throw mine away. Spend like 1.30on a bottle of water then that bottle lasts me months. Anyone else do this?
Yes. I take a bottle of water to bed every night and just refill the one bottle. I throw it away once the dark nasty stuff starts to form at the bottom of the bottle....🤣😉
The difference is that corn starch waste is plant-based and biodegradable and plastic is not. This product is compostable but not fully biodegradable, sure, but if they worked that part out then the waste becomes much less egregious. I’d much rather environmental pollutants that easily break down into natural components that can be used by the ecosystem than plastic that can only break down into smaller and smaller bits of plastic.
If it's reusable it needs to handle being properly cleaned and disinfected. I highly doubt something made out of compostable plastic will survive a dishwasher.
The dragons aren't thinking with the bigger picture here. The good thing about this product is that it doesn't need plastic to be made. Which means that if oil starts getting scarce (and it will) this will be one of the only ways to still create "plastic" products. Is absolutely genius
most of these dragons back away from deals when they need a couple of years still to take off... You expect them to invest into something that they will be dead by the time it happens?
Deborah doesn't seem to understand that you can't make a plastic-like material that is both fully compostable AND recyclable (in the current system). Her expectations are physically impossible.
Deborah's reasoning that it not being recyclable and therefore not really eco is flagrantly flawed. A banana skin isn't recyclable either. It's still better to have something decompose in a landfill than it be plastic and remain there for thousands of years
But how can this corn bottle be recyclable? It's not plastic, it's corn. Also recycling isn't all great. It gets sent off to far off countries which in itself impacts the carbon footprint. So being compostible would be better. Although really it needs to be easily compostible or biodegradable in regular conditions not lab conditions.
Compostable materials use massive amounts of starch production to produce, therefore is not sustainable. Plastic is the greenest option if recycled. It's not a material issue, it's a people issue.
What's the point of this product if it's not recyclable and not fully compostable or biodegradable? It would just end up in landfill with other plastic bottles, no?
Why was Peter impressed with his other business's turnover of £9million when every dragon knows its net profit that is the important number, not turnover....
Mental, its compostable, but not rrcyclble, Recycling has been a total bust, it only happens on a small percentage of items, you can only be done a few times you always need fresh oil. And fundamentally if we could replace every bottle with a compostable bottle the world would be much better off. If you can’t make money on it fair enough don’t invest in the business but that’s absolutely mental logic to pick recycling over compostable.
Ffs pitch was on such a high until he spoiled it by saying it’s not recyclable not even good if ends up in landfill!!! Back to the drawing board!!! Needs to be recyclable eco friendly sustainable and re-usable!!!
Touker missed the point on the reusability. Just because you can use it again, doesn't mean you're supposed to use it again. You can throw it out and it will compost or you can reuse it. Using Touker's logic, why doesn't Coke put on their label that you can reuse the bottle? Terrible branding. lol
Seems strange to me - he already has a multi-million pound turnover business, so why isn't that company investing in this product? Is it just that he needs their expertise? Or just getting publicity?
It isn't recyclable though, and the vast vast majority of people have a council recycling bin but very few people have (or would even consider) a compost heap, even if they have a garden (which many people also don't!).
Tuka - "There is a lot of work here" is the way to strong arm him. 33.3% is another outrageous offer. He should have refused and said I can give you 10% percent each, end off.
Lots of companies would pay a consultancy fee to get the insight of the dragons into their business, never mind their potential contacts. 33% is a good deal for him. The guy is running a 9.5m turnover business, he’s more than capable of seeing a good deal when it presents itself.

Deborah's whole eco friendly outlook is so flawed lol - they may not be "recyclable" but they're made from a crop that can be mass grown without much needed... Most plastic can be recycled once only. It's far far far far better...
No, your understanding of the issue is flawed. If biodegradable waste is thrown away and ends up in landfill, it will probably not biodegrade in the first place but if it did, it would release carbon dioxide without also becoming useful compost. Which is worse than a plastic bottle just sitting there.
