How to save a succulent that has succumbed to root rot.

  • Yikes! My aloe has fallen and it won't stand up!
It happens to the best of us. This specimen aloe succumbed to root rot, despite the fact that it never got any 'intentional' watering from my trusty garden hose. Clearly water averse, I've got to be much more careful with it from here on out. Watch as I remove the rot until healthy tissue is exposed. I'll let it harden off now, before replanting in in DRY porous soil in a POT. It's lost its inground privileges for the foreseeable future! I also spotted the start of some aloe mite damage on a couple of the leaves. I'll talk about how to handle that, too, with some imidacloprid insecticide like BioAdvanced Tree and Shrub from Bayer.
    What a hot mess.

Wow! From another of the comments I learned this is Aloidendron pillansii so I went to Wikipedia. Formerly Aloe pillansii, from South Africa, considered endangered. I had wondered why the stem looked so different from my Tree Aloes. Laura, there is still some black showing around the edge of the base where you made the cut. Maybe consider cutting way up where the stem is still green?

Amazing how you can tell the pest by the distressed leaves. You're the real OG Laura 🤣💪

I agree with putting that aloe in a pot. I keep several smaller succulents and all my citrus in pots so I have better control of their health. Thank you, Laura. 😘🙏🏼❤️

I have really learned a lot from your videos. Thank you! My small patch of succulents in my yard are pathetic compared to yours. You have inspired me to get into action once the weather cools down. I am in north Orange county and it is too warm to mess with my plants.

I love this plant! What Aloe is that and even better where can I buy it in NorCal for my garden?
Wishing quick recovery to your plant 🙏😁

This looks like aloidendron pillansii. It is highly unlikely that it will recover... It might take a year or two for it to die but that plant is gone. I dont think there is many success stories of rerooted aloidendron pillansii. Good luck with this plant. Looking forward to updates.

So instructive - can you say more about the aloe mite? How many times will you have to spray?

Hi dear Laura I like to know if you can show me the treatment for aloe mate I would like to see a picture of the product because I lost an aloe if I see the same thing I know how to treat it

Could you shorten the trunk a large amount on the aloe? I had a huge Aloe Ferox that did the same thing, not root rot just simply weight of the top caused it to fall and break. I chopped the long stalk off and reset the top. It worked!

I used to be headed heads from that exact plant in the entrance to a Mexican restaurant where I provided and serviced the plants, they lived up there for 2 years and didn't hardly crisp a leaf, have done similar things with agave but they are nowhere near as beautiful and intriguing as the f e r o x, unfortunately I didn't know better and I watered after propagating too soon and mush
