SW makes 9/8th sound like pop - genius!
Fairly certain it's 9/4, or maybe it's like 9/8 half time.
The difference between Steve and others is he probably might not have thought of time signatures while making music as much as us or the others.
@@kevinwillems8720 There's a polyrhythm happening. The guitar part can be logically grouped into 6 note phrases - opening riff arpeggios sound like 6/8 + 3/4 + 3/4 repeated (adding up to 9/4). Meanwhile, the drums has a backbeat going throughout so sounds like it should be counted with an even number of beats. Counting 9/4 would make the snare alternate between backbeat and downbeat after every bar.
Having said that, 9/4 is the best compromise for both instruments even though it makes counting harder for both!
When I first heard this song I was like "man, this is boring". But I realized that the song feels so sad and hopeful despite the apparent cheerfulness, and that there is really something much more about this song than what it seemed to be, especially in the album's context. Now the songs 3 Years Older and Hand Cannot Erase feel very personal. These songs feel like big consolations for all the modern world urban creatures. I listen to them while I wade through the subway, and the songs are telling me that everything is fine, despite whatever stressful obsessive thoughts of expectations and disappointment are worming into my brain. This is a 21C masterpiece.

The emotion in the song aside, how could anyone think this song was boring with that great crescendo powering in towards the end?
I would listen to YES, the "Talk" cd, on headphones beneath a cap or hat while on my daily time on the subway from Seoul to Suwon. It helped me to disconnect from the crush of people that were a constant in 1986-7. Your post is so well written and took me back there. Thank you.

Krookiemonster been listening to his solo work for several years now and he never disappoints. I can always find a new meaning in his lyrics and music. His work never gets old at all. A true delightful experience. HCE tour with Ninet was the best concert in my whole life.
I've just discovered him and all I can say is WTF have i missed out on - I've waited for this music all my life!! (The most successful English musician you've never heard of apparently?) I'm totally hooked !!

Joyce Vincent died of unknown causes in December 2003. Her remains were described as "almost skeletal" and she was lying face up, surrounded by Christmas gifts that she had wrapped but never sent. Her body was found on January 25, 2006.
The lady in this does a marvellous job of looking friendly, beautiful and contemptuous all at the same time. She is like the lady in my favourite coffee shop, the more distain she shows me the more I think I love her.
Saw him perform live in Pune. It was legendary.

This song is one of the most heart-breaking ever. Wilson calls "Routine" his most melancholic; but to me this is far more because it laments the ultimate and inevitable failure of what we, in the modern world, hope will be the most fulfilling relationship in our lives.
I would still say Routine is sadder. It’s about a mother who continues doing daily chores like making her kids lunches and getting their clothes out after they, along with her husband, were murdered.
@@DeanJG-Guitar Routine is sadder but describes a far rarer tragedy. HCE is about the everyday, boring tragedy of failed/difficult relationships. It's hard to truly relate to Routine but very easy to relate to this, so in that sense it's sadder.
Beautiful. Was quite some experience seeing this play live in his show.
