I’ve got the same lens, and I used it for wildlife on both my D5300 & later on my D500. As long as there’s enough light, it’s an amazing little lens. Some of my best photos of Sandhill Sandhill cranes, Canadian Geese, and moose & Caribou in Denali National Park were taken with that same lens.
@dengueberries It works nice, I set up to 1/2000 f/6. Auto ISO for flying birds, focus very fast, and the pictures are very sharp, but make sure you get good light and if you shoot up to the sky there is plenty
I got this lens along with a 18-55 included as kit lenses for my d3500. It works well for me for bird photography and other scenarios where I need some reach or where I want that background compression look. It's also very good for photographing bigger flowers. I did a nice panorama stitch of a cityscape shot with about 10-12 frames using this lens at 80mm focal length. The result is an amazingly sharp and detailed pano that's around 100 mega pixels resolution. This lens along with the f1.8 35mm dx lens is one of the better value lenses for dx cameras.
I got the D3500 with the AF-P 18-55 & 70-300 as well. The 70-300 is excellent but kind of bulky and at 70mm it's already too zoomed-in so I have to swap lenses often. I replaced the 18-55 with the 35 f1.8 which is amazing. Thinking to replace the 70-300 with the 55-200 which is more useable range for me.

I watched two of your videos on Nikon 70-300 lens. Great points you made. Got the lens. Love it. Thank you and keep up the good reviews. I like your perspective on this "budget lens" Not everyone need (want) to spend thousands on high end glass. This is a good lens for the average person to have. On Nikon D7200.
I have gotten great pics with the 70mm to 300mm Nikkor lens. I just found a used 200mm to 500mm Nikon lens very reasonable. They are on sale now for $1,059 at Nikon with free shipping til months end, June 2024. I just found this channel so I thought I should add this.
My work with this lens was featured on social media platforms and magazines, for about 200-300 dollars Canadian you guys cannot go wrong specially if photographing stationary objects or bigger wildlife in zoos but there will be large issue shooting birds in flight if your distant from the subject, or smaller birds, i would suggest the sigma 150-600mm
Difficult decision, as these are two very different lenes. It all depends on what you're photographing. The 70-300 is very versatile and quite light. The 300mm f4 will be sharper than the 70-300, but heavier and you're stuck at 300mm. I am having the same decision to make at the moment, but have decided to go for the 70-300mm, either the AF-P version, or the older 70-300mm FX VR version
Sounds great, but I understand from elsewhere that there is no manual focus ring - often useful to over-ride auto when the birds are sneaking around in shrubbery - or when a couple of grassheads intercept the farther target. Is there a way round this ? - would def lose some shots in my humble experience
Glad it was helpful!, but this lens is designed for APS-C cameras like the Nikon D7500 and D500. The D750 is full-frame, so you should look at this lens. Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E VR AF-P. www.nikon.com.au/af-p-nikkor-70-300mm-f-4-5-5-6e-ed-vr
We don't often get that kind of light here in the UK. That's why we need big fast long primes to make up for it. You can use slower lenses, of course you can it's just a little bit more challenging I think
I like the review on the 70-300mm af-p, and I want to get one but my with my D200 I think the af-p won't work and I will have to use a 70-300mm af-s. Do you have any ideas about is?
I saw a nikon 200-500 lens on the web, which is pretty cheap. But it say it has a little molts on its front glass, should I buy this one? since I want to invest more money on the future Z6 III. Thank you.
Hi Charles, love your videos!!! I have a question: Do you have a chromatic aberration on your Nikon AF-P DX 70-300mm lens? Especially at 300mm range ? If you do, how do you deal with that? IK (Canada)
yes, if you're using the Z30, Z50 or the Z-fc has these 3 cameras are crop-sensored cameras. I wouldn't recommend this lens for any full frame Z camera.
Wait... Thank you for the video, but online if i want to purchase, I see 2 lenses. One is 4.5 to 5.6 but the one you present is 4.5 to 6.3. What is the difference, and would one be better than the other ? Thank you for any insight...
I did get this lens a couple of months ago and took a lot of great photos with it in on a D3300 at a large music festival in the north of England in August. The performance wide open is really good, sharp and contrasty, the VR is excellent, the AF is quick and reliable. But now I'm considering maybe selling it and buying one of the newer 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 VR lenses to replace it with to be able to use the D3300 as a one-lens-do-all travel camera. According to DXOMark the 18-300mm (the newer one, not the f/3.5-5.6) should be just about as good as the AF-P DX 70-300mm, but I can't find any independent info/confirmation on this, except for heresay how it's great or crap, no consensus, so I don't know what to do and I don't have money to burn. Going on a trip soon and would like to either sell the 70-300 and get the 18-300, or just keep the 70-300 and get an 18-140 for travel (which I know is good for what it is). If anyone has experience with these lenses and could advise I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
There is always going to be a compromise when you buy a lens with a focal length from 18-300. it's either going to be soft at 18 or at 300mm. This is why most people like the 70-300 lens
@@CharlesNPhotography Thank you Charles, that was my hunch as well but it's good to have confirmation by someone with a lot more experience. The 70-300 AF-P is too good to let go. I was using a D600 with a 24-120mm f/4 alongside the D3300 with the 70-300, so I have a tremendous range there, but it means carrying two cameras and a fair bit of weight. That's fine for dedicated photography outings, but for holiday snaps it's out of the question. I think I'll heed your advice on the 18-140mm (from your "Perfect Travel Lens" video) and get one of them to pair with the D3300 for a portable but still very versatile combo. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom and enthusiasm!
Would the FX version work as well on a crop sensor model like D5600? There seem to be more second hand FX versions of this lens, than DX and they're pretty much the same price.
Hi does this DX lens five you the same crop factor than the 70-300 FX, which become a 105-450 on a DX body, or does this DX lens, being DX, render 70-300 on DX body ? Thank you for any insight...
@@CharlesNPhotography It makes sens, on my Canon I mainly have full frame lenses on my both FF and APS-C system, so I was kind of blurry with it when I asked... Thank you though. I wish I could find a comparative of photos taken both with the DX and FX version at different similar equivalent apertures on a DX body, for I really wonder, if there is an IQ loss between the 2 (sharpness, color and micro-contrast), because yes, the FX has all the advantages, crop factor additional reach, on lens VR access, 9 aperture blades vs 7 so much better for star effect rendering on night lights, weather seal and more I'm forgetting at the moment, but the DXs, if good, are cuties with their tinier size, yet I can fiddle with all missing FX assets but not the IQ. Wish they'd really push the enveloppe on their DX lens line up and give us awesome glass options there too. You lose the crop enhancing with a DX lens but there is something undeniably pleasant to have a lens just tailored for an existing system. One just wants them as good as their big brothers offering... Otherwise, aside of this lens (I'm trying to get a few for a used D500 I got almost bare a few weeks ago), would you say the 105 Nikon micro lens would be one of the best choices for it? I know I prefer the reach of my full frame 100mm Canon macro lens with my Canon APS-C over what I get with my Canon full frame so I kind of like the longer reach, but maybe you might think of better option... Thank you for all your prior insights.
@@CharlesNPhotography Wait, wait, Charles... I abided little fast in my prior reply... It looks like doesn't work like that. I recently got a D500 (DX format) and the 17-55mm f/2.8 DX lens for it, and the lens does indeed translate to a 25.5 to 82.50mm in 35mm format, for DX the lens is. So... are you sure you're right? Like you, at some point I thought that too (and it would make sens) but it looks like that's not what they do. If I take my Nikon DX 17-55mm f/2.8 lens as an example, then the DX 70-300mm should also become a 105-450mm in 35mm equivalent, no? I know one could think that, since it's a DX lens, the given focal length reading on it would be a 35mm equivalent to simplify, but apparently not, and one still have to convert for crop, just like with an FX lens...
Fantastic video, I have the 70-300 AF, which doesn’t auto focus with my camera body (D5600). I’m looking at either the AF-P or AF-P with a teleconverter, before I shell out on a sigma 150-600
There's a huge difference between the Sigma 150-600mm and the Nikon AF-P70-300mm lens. You're going to get more reach with the Sigma than the Nikon, but the Sigma is about 4 times the price as the Nikon.
Hey, I'm using nikon D5600 and I'm considering buying this lens, so did you buy this lens? (if so, you might help me to decide whether to buy it or not)
Absolutely! it would be just as good on the D7500 and with the focus being so quick, may give you the chance at getting shots that you could have missed
I'm not aware that this lens can be bought in a non-VR version. I was under the impression that there's only a DX and FX version, and both have VR and the VR is activated by the camera 🤔
@@CharlesNPhotography It usually comes as a kit lens in cameras bundles. You can get it either buying it with the camera and the other 18-55 lens or just the lens. Its a AF-P DX lens, so it can auto focus but is not vr.
While the Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR Telephoto Zoom lens is able to be mounted on the Nikon D3100 DSLR camera, it will not work as AF-P type lenses are not compatible with this model of camera. Compatible lenses for the Nikon D3100 are AF-S and E-type lenses.
Hello. Totally agree about Nikon color science, it is spot on. Do you alter your settings inside the camera at all? I tend to bump up saturation and sharpness. Thanks in advance. Your pictures are wonderful!!!
In this video I discuss why you should use Picture Controls th-cam.com/video/g7Qzw7L3PbA/w-d-xo.html I use the Landscape Control and slightly increase Saturation, Contrast, and sharpness
@@CharlesNPhotography Ah, very good, must have gone for another coffee and missed that. I never touch the contrast, but I will include that. Thanks. By the way I went over to Canon for a while, but came back to Nikon. No comparison in my view.
I received it from ebay and did not believe that the lens was inside the box, it was too light. It works nicely enough for a price of 266 eur. Only there is no lens hood included.
Your Photos are amazing, i hope to get at your level one day, with exactly this lense i got for 1 month now.aswell the kit lens 18-55 vr and a UW 10-20 vr.my question you might give answer : you use a Tripod for the photos in this video ? Just keep going, is a lot to learn from you. Thanks
That's a really good review sir, I am hobbyist photographer, can't afford expensive lens, so got one Nikon 70-300 (non VR) lens and tried capturing birds with the same lens mounted on my Nikon D80, but couldn't get Sharp Images. if possible please guide
Good review. You said good lens, maybe not to print. I do plan to print some landscape pics. My D5500 is 24mp. This lens is made for my camera so why can't I print? I printed out 10" x 20" on my kit lens VR 18mm-140mm and it looked great. This is a newer and many say improved lens. I can get a NEW one for $239.99 (not auth. dealer) + $18.99 for a two year warranty.
Thanks so much Charles for such an excellent review of the Lens. Kindly advise me, if this lens works (compatible) with D5200 Nikon or not, so that i can plan to purchase this. Thanks
Dear friend.. Thanks for your great video. ▪ Question 🙋🏻♂️. I'm a Birdwatcher.. So because of pandemia and Budget. I bought a NIKON D5,000.. (old one but still works) Do you recommend this 70-300 AFP for my Old Nikon 📸..? Is it compatible or do U suggest other. Thanks Friend. 😇 ✌🏼
If you own the Nikon D5000, this lens is not compatible with it. The D5000 is not compatible with AF-P type lenses as they use a new electromagnetic focusing system that the D5000 cannot communicate with
@@CharlesNPhotography thank you. I am not familiar with lenses, can you tell me what kind of telephoto lens will work on my D90? I am looking to buy 300mm if there is.

Would the FX version work as well on a crop sensor model like D5600? There seem to be more second hand FX versions of this lens, than DX and they're pretty much the same price.
I've just answered your question about this.
what camera body did you use? is it nikon d500?
Yes, I was using this lens with my Nikon D500
Hi does this DX lens five you the same crop factor than the 70-300 FX, which become a 105-450 on a DX body, or does this DX lens, being DX, render 70-300 on DX body ?
Thank you for any insight...
It's a DX Lens, so it's 70-300mm
Very helpful!! Question, how much of that detail would show with a camera with lesser megapixels?
Not much It's the lens that give you the ability to get the fine details, the camera just records it.
Have the non vr version as kit lens. It does focus fast and is clear. Edit in nx studio and im getting great results for low dollars.
Thanks for sharing!
The ED 70-300mm?
@@Jay-vr8it Yes just the non VR version
Fantastic video, I have the 70-300 AF, which doesn’t auto focus with my camera body (D5600). I’m looking at either the AF-P or AF-P with a teleconverter, before I shell out on a sigma 150-600
There's a huge difference between the Sigma 150-600mm and the Nikon AF-P70-300mm lens. You're going to get more reach with the Sigma than the Nikon, but the Sigma is about 4 times the price as the Nikon.
Hey, I'm using nikon D5600 and I'm considering buying this lens, so did you buy this lens? (if so, you might help me to decide whether to buy it or not)
Do you think this lens with a D7200 would be a good starter camera for wildlife?
Yes it would be Matthew, I've found that it focuses very quickly and the images are very sharp.
Very nice charles would you give the lens ago on a d7500 keep the good work up thank you.
Absolutely! it would be just as good on the D7500 and with the focus being so quick, may give you the chance at getting shots that you could have missed
Hi, im looking at this lens for amature sports photography, will this lens do the job for moving targets that will need to be kept in focus and sharp?
It sure will, just make sure that your Nikon dslr is compatible with it.
@@CharlesNPhotography Perfect thanks for the answer! I have a D5600, Nikon stated its fully compatible so let's hope so!
canon efm 55-200 for m50 is also very good like this.. light weight..
Yes, but here I'm talking about a lens for a Nikon camera, not for Canon or Sony
Would you recommend me buy the non VR version for $65?
I'm not aware that this lens can be bought in a non-VR version. I was under the impression that there's only a DX and FX version, and both have VR and the VR is activated by the camera 🤔
@@CharlesNPhotography It usually comes as a kit lens in cameras bundles. You can get it either buying it with the camera and the other 18-55 lens or just the lens. Its a AF-P DX lens, so it can auto focus but is not vr.
Hello I have a question does this lens work with my d3100?
In this video I discuss why you should use Picture Controls th-cam.com/video/g7Qzw7L3PbA/w-d-xo.html
I use the Landscape Control and slightly increase Saturation, Contrast, and sharpness
@@CharlesNPhotography Ah, very good, must have gone for another coffee and missed that. I never touch the contrast, but I will include that. Thanks. By the way I went over to Canon for a while, but came back to Nikon. No comparison in my view.
Sir which camera body you used with tjis 70 300 in this video images?
I use a Nikon D500
I received it from ebay and did not believe that the lens was inside the box, it was too light.
It works nicely enough for a price of 266 eur.
Only there is no lens hood included.
Yes, this lens is light, but it does produce great photos, look for

👍 the video awesome 😎
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi does this lens work on d3400 and d7000?
I list the compatibility of this lens in the video
Your Photos are amazing, i hope to get at your level one day, with exactly this lense i got for 1 month now.aswell the kit lens 18-55 vr and a UW 10-20 vr.my question you might give answer : you use a Tripod for the photos in this video ?
Just keep going, is a lot to learn from you. Thanks
Thank you very much for your feedback, it is very much appreciated.🙏
Will that lens do good on a D7500
Yes it certainly does, as I used this lens on my D7500 and the D500. It was quite sharp
Which one will fit my D90. Great video.
This lens will not fit your D90
Good information.
Glad it was helpful!
Is this compatible with the Z50?
yes it is, you just need to buy the FTZ adapter and it'll work perfectly
Nice camera sir!😉 Shooting with a pro camera and an entry level lens your going to get a good immage....just saying
thank you
The photos look great, but it doesn't work on older cameras. I'm out of luck on my D300S and D80.
Yes, you're right, but for the newer dslr's this lens is great value
Nice! 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Are the pictures edited?
No! These images are JPG files straight of my Nikon D500
Thank you so much for this!
Does this lens work on Nikon D5000? sorry i’m a beginner.
No it does not
That's a really good review sir, I am hobbyist photographer, can't afford expensive lens, so got one Nikon 70-300 (non VR) lens and tried capturing birds with the same lens mounted on my Nikon D80, but couldn't get Sharp Images. if possible please guide
Thank you so much for your comment, much appreciated
please i need a new camera pls can you help me suggest a camera
What type of photography do you take and what is your budget?
Good review. You said good lens, maybe not to print. I do plan to print some landscape pics. My D5500 is 24mp. This lens is made for my camera so why can't I print? I printed out 10" x 20" on my kit lens VR 18mm-140mm and it looked great. This is a newer and many say improved lens.
I can get a NEW one for $239.99 (not auth. dealer) + $18.99 for a two year warranty.
Why would you not be able to print a 10" x 20" print?

Thanks so much Charles for such an excellent review of the Lens. Kindly advise me, if this lens works (compatible) with D5200 Nikon or not, so that i can plan to purchase this. Thanks
No the earliest D5*** series that supports AF-P lenses is the D5300
@@CharlesNPhotography Thanks for your prompt response.
The D5000 is not compatible with AF-P type lenses as they use a new electromagnetic focusing system that the D5000 cannot communicate with
@@CharlesNPhotography hoooo ... so sad..thanks ... any suggestion about what I can addapt ..? thanks
Why was your hand keep on shaking?
I have a medical condition that causes my hands to shake when I'm tired. 😞
What's the lens hood code number?

Is this campatible with the Nikon D90?
No! It's not, the earliest dslr that it's compatible with is the D7000
60-600 sigma is very heavy!!!
yes
Got my lens from amazon. cost me 145.00 referb.
That's a great buy, enjoy using your lens 🙏
you sound a bit like Scarface
it's okay, I got a lisp too
Thanks, but I don't have a lisp, that's just the way I talk
will this work good on old nikon d90?
No it will not
@@CharlesNPhotography thank you. I am not familiar with lenses, can you tell me what kind of telephoto lens will work on my D90? I am looking to buy 300mm if there is.
