My friend, it doesn't matter, 60s or 70s or 80s whatever. The Moody Blues are timeless! That is their magic!
Justin Hayward with the dreamy, passionate vocals and soaring guitar work, Mike Pinder contributing the gorgeous swelling Chamberlin strings, Ray Thomas adding some beautiful flute, John Lodge laying down groovy bass lines, and Graeme Edge punctuating it all with great drum fills. From my favorite album - Seventh Sojourn released in 1972. RIP to Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge and wishing continued health for Justin Hayward, John Lodge and Mike Pinder. Classy and unique band. Happy they were finally inducted into the RRHOF a few years back. Cheers Harri!

This is the best of Hayward’s voice. Ever uplifting and such a positive song. Never ever get tired of hearing this gem.
I know all their songs by heart...at least those from Days of Future Passed through Seventh Sojourn and Blue Jays, which is very similar. The one that reminds me most of you is "Are You Sitting Comfortably?". Very Merlin. Very Harri.
I did an arrangement of Are You Sitting Comfortably as a project in my first year of music college. Love that song.

Justin Hayward has such a soothing and comforting voice. Even when a song is weak, and this one is not, he makes it sound interesting and irresistible. Their first seven albums with this lineup are mini masterpieces.

I was fortunate enough to see them do this song live in the early 70’s. I love the continuous flow of the music. I think the 60’s from a music standpoint started in 1963, and didn’t really end until 1974, maybe 1975.

This is probably my favorite Moody Blues song. Another of my favorites is “Talking Out Of Turn.” Justin Hayward’s voice is one of the best.

I love the beautiful sound that The Moody Blues make. I have always appreciated Justin's voice. Another totally different song called The Land Of Make Believe was made by a totally different type of band called Bucks Fizz.

the Chuck Mangione Quartet, called "Land of Make Believe"!
Chuck Mangione’s live album “Live At The Hollywood Bowl: An Evening of Magic” has the definitive version of his “Land Of Make Believe.” It’s absolutely gorgeous.
The lead guitar tone is just about the prettiest ever! This whole album should be cataloged under the title " Historically Incredible Guitar Tones" as a point of reference.

bought this album when it came out in '72. 19 at the time with my life in front of me. heard this song for the first time and it shot into my moody top 10 - at the time. many more since then. the harmonies at the end of each line send chills through me and bring tears to my eyes now. oh man - to be 19 again

What gorgeous sounds they composed and produced especially in the late 60's through late 70's. They were and are Simply Magic. Harri, I would also highly recommend the song New Horizons from the same album. One of Justin Hayward's most beautiful ballads. Cheers guys!
This and New Horizons from the same seven sojourn album are two of Justin's finest songs. This song basically has three parts each as beautiful as the others and he repeats all three a second time. A very interesting structure
Never heard this before but another auditory gem from the boys from Birmingham, the land of gray skies and gales. England, you have given us so much, so many musical gifts it almost isn't fair. May God continue to bless the sceptered isle.

Hello Harry! Thank you for another brilliant musical review! It is true that the Beatles and Moody Blues knew each other for a long time. Note to all, please correct me: A long time story I heard, true or not I do not know, is that the Moody Blues via Ray Thomas discussed with the Beatles the use of a Mellotron in the production of ‘Strawberry Fields’. Also heard that the Moody Blues on occasion used Apple recording studios. I think this particular subject is very interesting for a variety of reasons; the very high number of spectacularly talented musicians from the same time period and same geographical area, the influences shared, etc.

Superb track from an amazing band. The Mike Pinder years were underrated. As stated the first seven albums were so great and the ability to follow up after the split seemed impossible. The style changed but I enjoyed all the rest. Justin and John have great voices but don’t forget Ray who gave such different style on his tracks. Thanks Harri for a brilliant review.
Mike had an excellent voice as well. The band definitely declined after he left.
@@NYCOPERAFAN Yes, just wasn't the same with the otherwise very well credentialed Pat Moraz from Yes replacing. He didn't sing but as new keyboardist just too showy, flamboyant (for the Moodies)--and the rest of the band seemed to go with that for awhile, almost like they were the ones under the audition microscope, having to prove themselves and not Moraz. Same kind of uncomforfable/bad fit change with Chicago's new young shirt-open-to-the-belly Peter Frampton-esque gunslinger after Terry Kath died.
I’m obsessed with McCartney. Certainly a similar gift for exquisite, seemingly effortless melodies among the Moodies and Macca.

And yes, Harri, I know what you mean about your comparison with Paul McCartney. I also wished that McCartney would’ve worked with Justin Hayward or The Moody Blues at least once. But, I suppose that may have been complicated regarding the members of the Moody Blues.
Of course the Moody's did tour with the Beatles long time ago. I'll bet there was some great jamming going on. This was, I believe, before Justin and John came on board.

The Moody Blues were Magic, just magic. May I suggest Melancholy Man from Question of Balance
It is, off, by far the best Album they ever did and that is saying something. I first heard them in December 1967 in this format. That was Nights in White Satin which I believe was popularised by a US DJ who wanted a long track so he could leave the desk for a few minutes. Maybe a crafty Reefer. You should remember in those days Radio constantly played short songs so most stations would never think of using a song much over 3 minutes long.
This song is from 8th album "Seventh Sojourn" in 1972. This is a great record. It has other songs such as "Isn't Life Strange", "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock & Roll Band)", "For My Lady" etc.
I believe he did Isn't Life Strange.

The Moody 's and Chicago are the most enduring bands from 60's and on,because they played MUSIC... I love all kinds of music but the best is that which has more movements. It us not the boring radio hits. You can make movies with these songs---(oh, they have)

Justin Hayward is a great vocalist, as is Paul McCartney. This melody certainly sounds like something Paul McCartney could easily have concocted. I’m also a huge McCartney fan.

The song is a gorgeous and emotional celebration, and here you are talking about when it was written. Why aren't you just allowing yourself to FEEL the song, EXPERIENCE the emotion? I don't believe this is your first listen to this song. I think you have listened to it and analyzed it to death before you made this post. He normally takes one break in the middle, and maybe another short one closer to the end because of blocks. And he was quite eloquent in his feelings for the ethereal nature of the song.
