I still can't believe that the same guy who played Ross and Monica Geller's father also played one of the coolest interpretations of Detective Philip Marlowe.

I want Phillip Marlowe's apartment (Hightower apartments in Hollywood Heights, also seen in Kenneth Branagh's DEAD AGAIN)!

The novel is the greatest private eye novel, and will never be surpassed. The film is valid in its own right, though, and might be Altman's best.

'Who else in the movie has a conscience?" I believe that the black guy from the supermarket who Marlowe passes in the corridor at the police station could be said to have a conscience. Marlowe asks him about his girl when the guy asks him about his cat. The guy says "She's alright man. She got busted at a protest rally. I had to bust the cop that busted her ass." That's righteous to me. Roger Wade kills himself because of various circumstances, most immediately being slapped by Dr Verringer when Dr Verringer forces Wade to write a cheque to cover the clinic fees. Wade could be considered to have a conscience.

Elliot Gould nailed it why the movie worked brilliantly and let me parahase it, "Altman made me play Marlowe as an idealist."

Hopefully, when and if Criterion acquire the rights to TLG, they will add this interview as a bonus feature.

I loved the movie so much. And then here I realize just now that Elliott Gould is Ruben from Ocean's Eleven. My mind is blown.
Also, I can't believe this movie wasn't big when it first came it. It is just so good.

Private eye and film noir fans did not want to see Marlowe played that way, or a Chandler story told that way, the distributor had no idea what to do with it - it's a quirky piece of work that was never meant for mass consumption. That is very much to its credit. I love so many Altman pictures, and I am convinced this is his best one.

Blake Couch To answer the question below, there was a lot of improvisation by the actors during the shoot, as was typical of an Altman picture. I've read that the scenes with Sterling Hayden in particular were largely ad libbed, as Hayden was drunk and/or high on weed for most of them.

My all time favorite movie til Donnie Darko came out. I can not believe that I missed an opportunity to see this. Happily there is now youtube.

Thank you for a very interesting insight into the film! I've been looking for a Elliot Gould take on Altman for months! Thank you very much for a great upload! Nice that the Santa Monica Public Library would do such a great showing!

Marlowe isn't that vindictive or over the top. But the film had a great atmosphere.

Interesting film. How much freedom was the cast allowed with their dialog?

I like this movie a lot , Elliot Gould really gives a 5 star performance as Marlowe. with a better supporting cast , this might have become a true classic.
