The anthology series this episode came from was called, "Cavalcade of America" (later called "The Dupont Show of the Month") produced by the Dupont company. It wasn't all Westerns, but covered a variety of genres. Thanks for posting. I really enjoy these "forsaken" shows, especially when they unexpectedly show my favorite stars in their earlier career.

That was a great show for 1957. I loved PM at that age. I still think she had the most beautiful and expressive eyes and smile. and I think she may be the reason I sitll think women with pigtails are beautiful. It's fun to see her as I remember her.
I thought I recognized actor Kenneth MacDonald who played Halloway, one of Mr. Barton's hired guns, as a frequent actor on many of the Three Stooges shorts, where he usually played a gangster or shyster who was out to get the Stooges.
Farming didn't work out, so he taught science at the local college, then went on a three hour tour that would change his life forever. Meanwhile, his pappy-in-law became a recovering alcoholic who was Marshal of the town of North Fork, New Mexico Territory, and best friend of Lucas McCain, whom he affectionately referred to as "Lucas Boy".
This, TV Show, or at least..."THE" "Pilot Episode", has all earmarks of an Ethical Or Morality Tale...and it appears to possess All of the Goodness of a "Little House On The Prairie" Episode. It really does remind me of the Little House Series. Girl Gives Morality Lessons! However, I will say that it does (or...at least this Pilot Episode) has a bit more ACTION...a bit more like a traditional, Classical Western? When I first heard of this Pilot Episode with Patty McCormick being the Central "STAR" in a WESTERN, and I had heard part of the Title...Dan Marshall's Brat, I thought that it had possibly something to do with a series about a U.S. Marshal, or Town Marshal, and Patty McCormick was evidently enlisted into the Daughter of some sort of a Western Lawman? I guessed...that it might be analogous to an Old Western...Nancy Drew? Where her Father, the U.S. Marshal...possibly--quite coincidentlly--named: "Marshall"(?), and I thought that it was "Nancy Drew's Exploits that were the...Literal or Literary Inspiration of "Her" (Patty McCormick's) Character's Snooping, Sifting, and Sensing...and, ultimately, uncovering the unvarnished "TRUTH"...regarding various vicious and Violent Wild Westerns...and their Wild & Wicked Ways...Intense intrigue involving crass and crazy criminals and crime??? I can even see where a Sneaking, Sly, Snooping--Brash Young Girl...might gain the Moniker or reputation of being..."A Brat"??...Or, at least--by the Criminals or Criminal Element who might probably wish to keep their secrets...well...Secret? I still Wonder WHERE this Western Was going after the Pilot Episode? Little House...or the Marshall's Jail House? I can not leave this Series Starring Patty McCormick without mentioning that I am still SHOCKED & Surprised that she did not become a Big Adult Movie Star? She Clearly had the TALENT, and the Looks??? I still think that she might have been attempting to broaden her potential Acting Roles by being in an Action Western Series? Or, was she simply "Rehabilitating" herself after being such a Marvelous, Mad, Murderous Little Maniacal Miss In "The Bad Seed"! By being a...Sweet, Innocent, Little Girl in a Little-House Situation, maybe she was attempting to make her Audience forget all of her...mania...? Maybe, she was going to start, or try to begin, something like A Return of the Movie Serial Queens from the Silent Era, where we find the ACTION was dominated by Girls and young Women? Well over 95% of the STARS in these Action-Packed Silent Serials were focused on the escapades of Teen Girls or very young Women!

When I first heard something about Miss McCormack performing/acting in a Western TV Show or TV Series Pilot, I started looking, and I came across a stray reference...or what is apparently...an incorrect reference entitled: "The Marshall's Brat", and this is what led me to conclude that the Patty McCormack TV series was...something...it might not have been? However, I was and am somewhat familiar with the situation of Western TV shows from the late 50's, and what is not really know today is the omnipresent/pervasive aspect of Western's in the Entertainment Industry from the inception of the Film/Movie/TV Industry until the early 1960's. It is not well known today that up until the early 1960's over half of the Films Ever Produced and Filmed in America were Westerns, and from the beginning of the TV Industry until about 1965, we find that well over 1/2 the TV Series were likewise...Western Themed. This caused virtually all Actors & Actresses to understand that to be an Actor (or Actress) one simply had to be able to perform or act convincingly in a Western themed Show/Film/Series! Thus, every Actor/Actress...who wanted to have any sort of A Career...or simply be Marketable/Bankable.... essentially...needed to be able to look or be convincing in a Western! As a result, many Actors or Actresses...simply had to be seen in a Western. It was simply a "Rite Of Passage"! One needed to be seen in a Western just to prove that they looked and acted believably within the Western Genre. Any self-respecting Actor/Actress simply Had--To be seen working in a Western. Their Talent-Agent or Talent-Agency would require it! One needed to Show that your Acting Skills included Riding (believably & comfortably), looking right in Western Apparel, and look like one could handle Guns without looking too-stupid! This TV Show Episode from "The Dupont Calvalcade Theater" Anthology was not that surprising. Everybody in the Film/TV Industry needed Western Themed Genre experience (Actors, Directors, Producers, Behind-The-Camera staff). They needed to fill their Resume with the Staple Westerns. However, I should also mention that most of the ideas for TV series and the potential casting was strongly derived from either Motion-Picture Films or from these TV Western Anthologies. The Anthologies were a rather Inexpensive testing ground for the Actors/Actresses the Plots, Characters, or Modified Themes made into Westerns... but initially conceived for other Genres. Westerns were a Genre that was very accepting of ideas or themes derived from other forms or formats. The "Psychological Western" with all of its Freudian, Neo-Freudian, Post-Freudian psychology was very easily and successfully adapted from another Non-Western Genre, and Westerns were almost endlessly adaptable from such Non-Western Plots, Characters, or almost anything conceivable for Film. This is sort of what I thought was behind Miss McCormack's Western sojourn with this episode from a Western Anthology series. I could see that Miss McCormack's Wicked & Wizardly work in the "Bad-Seed" might require her to be "Rehabilitated" by having her perform within the confines of being a...Gosh-Darn, Sweet "Little Girl"...but I also believed that there might have been an...additional reason for her to be in...Specifically...a Western? Could it have been...something of a Screen--Test...of Sorts? Could it have been something of an Audience Acceptance Test for Miss McCormack to see how the General TV Audience...Responded to her within or under-the-guise of portraying herself...as a young Girl in a Western Situation? Hence, my speculation that this Supposedly Simple...Anthology Episode may have had much more...IN PLAY...than simply being a...One-Shot Anthology Episode? The Fact that I had first found the...."incorrect" title of the Episode under the term: "THE Marshal's Brat"...may have had much more "TRUTH" in it than one might normally assume? One final comment about Film/Motion-Picture Actors of the period...Supposedly or typically did not Stoop or Condescend to Work in TV...was not really true by the late 1950's. Major Stars were exploring the TV...possibilities...and it is not really an impossibility that Miss McCormack (or her Agent) might consider making Her a STAR in a TV Western? So, was this "Episode" much more than a Single Shot...or...Was it a TRY-OUT for a Full-Fledged TV Series with Miss McCormack intended or working as the STAR? I Still like...or like to think that my idea of Miss McCormack's TV Series borrowing the Nancy Drew Detective Plot and modifying it into a Western Themed Genre might have some audience viability, and I will note that Miss McCormack seemed believably capable of Riding and looking/appearing comfortable and in-control of her horse/pony. She looked reasonably comfortable and Natural in her somewhat "Western" outfit, and with some modifications...this entire TV Series Starring Miss McCormack might have come to pass...?
William Foster I read your comment. It was interesting. Whatever the reasons they made these shows, I'm sure glad they did. It helps to support my illusion that there was a time when the shows were pure and wholesome in content AND intent. Sadly, tho, I see varying ungood themes in even the 'good' shows and we definitely know NOW what the actors have had to endure in order to be in the shows. With nepotism being the order of the day, every day, it gets even weirder and worse after that. But in order to enjoy some of them, I just take them at face value and enjoy what APPEARS to be with what they were supposed to represent. God bless you. 🙏
Lightweight fare, yes, but some good acting all around. Great cast. Kenneth McDonald, as usual, does a great job as Holloway, the spokesman for the gang shooting it out with the ranchers.
