    There are hundreds of names that come to mind but Paddy Considine playing King Viserys in House of the Dragon is one of the best improvements in any media adaptation ever. Truly took a nobody character and turned him into a superstar. You'll agree when I eventually convince you to watch it. 😜

    Honestly my #1 for LOTR would be Christopher Lee as Saruman. He could’ve been such an easily forgotten character and Lee brings such weight to the role that he becomes the most memorable villain of the trilogy, even though he’s technically a side character.

    • @MagusMarquillin
      @MagusMarquillin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Truth. Funnily enough, both he and Tolkien (they had met) thought he should play Gandalf and he auditioned for that role. Maybe it because he's played so many villians he gets typecast, we know how well he speaks with venom, so it's really hard to picture Gandalf going as well as it did with Saruman opposite McKellen. Still I'd love to see him do it in an alternate reality and be proven wrong.
      They actually sought out Sean Connery to play Gandalf, and I'm glad he turned down the role - I don't think their first casting impulses were _always_ on point - just usually.

    • @samm8190
      @samm8190 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MagusMarquillin yeah I’ve heard that. Honestly I think Christopher Lee would make a better Gandalf than McKellen. And I Love Sir Ian as Gandalf but I think Lee is a much better actor and would’ve brought a more book accurate dimension to the character.

    • @MagusMarquillin
      @MagusMarquillin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samm8190 You might be right, and it'd have been nice If they'd taken Tolkien's one recommendation about a movie. I'm not sure Ian or Chris is better then the other, but I like your confidence in Chris - but do you know a movie where he's in a warm, nurturing role? All I can think of is the Bookseller in Hugo, and he's still pretty aloof there.

    Might be unpopular, but I'd like to turn the spotlight to some not so central characters the actors for which were perfectly cast:
    Charles Dance as Tywin Lannister in "Game of Thrones" and as Lord Vetinari in "Going Postal"
    Sean Bean as Boromir in "The LoTR" and as Eddard 'Ned' Stark in "GoT"
    David Bradley as Argus Filch in Harry Potter and as Walder Frey in "GoT".
    Also as much as I like Henry Cavill as Geralt, Doug Cockle beats him hands down as Geralt in the video games based on voice alone!
    And speaking of fantasy video game castings Claudia Black was a perfect match as the voice of Morrigan in the Dragon Age games.

    I have to 100% agree with the Kaz casting! It was the same for me, I watched Shadow & Bone, then found out it was based on Leigh Bardugo's books, but the person I was chatting with suggested to read Six of Crows. So I did. I didn't find Six of Crows as YA as the Grisha series, but instead I found it as very well written, all the characters were really well hashed out. Enjoyed it very much. And it was definitely the better of the two series, imo.
    I also agree with Moiraine's casting being really good. However, I think Rosamund Pike, even through great in the roll, is also the series weakest link. Simply due to the fact that she's supposed to be a side character, but because she's a big name actress, Rafe is making her front and center. The first season, along with all it's wrongs, really pushed Moiraine as the POV/main character, which I feel was a big mistake. All the cast are actually great in their respective roles, they just have crappy material to work with! Having Moiraine as the main character really detracts from the rest of the cast and story.
    Having read the Witcher series, played the Witcher 3 game, and seen the show, Henry Cavell as Geralt is absolutely one of the best castings in an adaptation I've ever seen. He captured Geralt perfectly, especially in comparison to the video game character. The rest of the show is a very meh adaptation and is departing from the books.

    • @Bookborn
      @Bookborn  ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah i'm also similarly conflicted with Rosamund Pike being such a big name. I didn't mind her being the focus for the first two episodes - when I originally heard they were going to make the dragon a secret, I actually thought they'd focus on her perspective for a couple of episodes and then we'd see the dramatic rand/dad scene and know and then it would follow him. I still stand by that being better than what they did haha. I'm going to be hopeful going into season 2...we'll see.

    Yes, Rebecca Ferguson has been cast as Monza. Super excited for that.
    Despite how flawed the Hobbit movies were Martin Freeman was perfect for Baggins. Hated how Kili didn't look like a dwarf though, but that's more a make up issue than casting.
    Not read the Grisha books but the Six of Crows episodes of the show were the most interesting bit. Not so much interested in Shadow & Bone but the Six of Crows books sound good. I don't usually like YA.
    Andy Serkis owned the role of Gollum. Is it weird Gollum is my favourite LotR character?

    • @Bookborn
      @Bookborn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never read Shadow and Bone becaue I heard it was much more YA, and like you, those parts of the show I just didn't vibe with. I enjoyed Six of Crows and would recommend it. It's def got YA angst, but I always like a heist story so it was fun.

    I loved Alan Rickman's performance precisely because it was different than Book Snape. Book Snape to me always felt much more over the top - constantly shrieking, and entirely unlikable, like a scooby-doo villain. But is it even possible for Alan Rickman to be unlikable? Of course not, and he makes Snape someone I actually enjoyed, and whose redemption I could believe. But since Rickman's performance did feel so different from the book, I'd instead give my Best Casting vote to Robbie Coltrane. I'm confident his shoes will be the biggest to fill in any new adaptation.
    Also, since you mentioned Best Served Cold, I'd love to hear your thoughts on its potential casting!

    Andy Serkis is my choice for Lord of the rings. Like, Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood and specially Ian McKellen were insane but literally EVERYTHING about that version of Gollum is magnificent. Every movement, every single line was just perfect.
    I also absolutely agree with Rebecca Ferguson and Freddy Carter. Freddy in particular was mesmerizing specially for a character I adore so much I couldn't imagine how it could work in an adaptation but he nailed every single scene.
    Of Harry Potter I also want to mention Lasana Lynch (I think that's her name) as Luna Lovegood and Imelda Staunton as Umbridge since those are some of the characters with the most distinct personalities in the books and they brought them to life perfectly and they are not mentioned that much.
    I'm sad you didn't mention The princess bride since literally every cast member of that one is perfect. I don't know the name of the actors but the ones of Vizzini and Fezzik look like they were the exact same people from the book and hell, the actor of Íñigo Montoya did an even better version than the book, which was already excellent. A great cast all around of a phenomenal movie

    Fantastic video @Bookborn. I agree with *all* your choices (where I've read AND watched the IP). We could spend hours discussing their places in the top 10, but the actors are absolutely top in their casts. David Tennant and Martin Sheen are sheer perfection as Crowley and Aziraphale respectively are so perfect in their roles that I don't even remember what my imagination had pictured for all the years I loved the book before seeing the show - *PERFECTION*.
    I'd love to mention a couple of my other favourite casting choices. Despite not looking *anything* like the character is described in the books, Charles Dance plays Havelock Vetinari (The Patrician) in BBC's adaptation of Discworld's Going Postal *gloriously*, FINALLY an actor embodied how the character is in my mind. On the flip side, but remaining in Discworld, is the performance of Don Bridges as Cohen the Barbarian, in the fan-made adaptation of Pratchett's short story Troll Bridge. Don is the personification of Paul Kidby's defining image of the character. Moving away from Terry Pratchett to the rigid and rule bound worlds of Jane Austen, I adore Jennifer Ehle's performance as Elizabeth Bennett in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

    I love Nina in the show and their story is the one I care about MOST.
    Love love love the Hunger Games movies and books! It's funny because of all the movies out there these are movies that my husband and I could watch over and over again and end up putting on a few times per year. I agree Effy and Katniss are the best.

    Okay, I have a contrary opinion about HP. Though I LOVE Alan Rickman, his Snape bugs me because it seems he's incapable of yelling and bringing the intensity that Snape has in the books. He doesn't come close to the description of rage Rowling describes😬 sorry don't hit me🙈🙊. I think Luna was the absolute best casting in the whole series imo.
    LOTR entire cast is PERFECT and I can't possibly pick a best casting. I love them all😭
    I haven't read or seen Good Omens, I think it's time!
    I'll add one of my own- I think the casting in the Narnia movies is excellent. My kids watch those movies on repeat. But if I picked one it would be Liam Nieson as Aslan. Runner up would be the actor for Lucy!

    LOTR casting was indeed exceptional.
    And proof positive that SUPERFANS of books don't actually judge as harshly as people like to believe.
    Elijah Woods? Great actor. Perfect for the role he played in the movie. Not actually much like book Frodo at all. Book Frodo was FAR more mature and heroic. A genuine leader forced into a bad situation by circumstance and fate. But the ADAPTATION chose to highlight different aspects of the character and so the casting worked to perfection.
    Honestly, only Sean Astin was chefs kiss perfection out of the hobbits for me. He managed to capture the innocent, naive but overprotective servant. The salt of the earth working class hero that Tolkien was channelling from his time at war.
    Readers simply don't mind adaptations taking liberties when it is for a purpose :P
    I genuinely think that the "media" obsession with identity politics has lead casting directors to some TRULY awful decisions.
    Not because diversity or inclusion are bad. Not because adaptations can't possibly make these alterations. But because the decisions aren't made with a purpose. They don't serve the story, and so the story must serve them... and that doesn't work so well.
    I think the Witcher is a prime example. The show simply seems to completely ignore race (much as WoT does) but as ANY anti-racist activist can tell you, "colour blindness" is ABSOLUTELY not unproblematic. I personally think it's a worthy goal... for real life interactions, but in terms of representation what it ACTUALLY leads to is erasure.
    And in the case of WoT it SEVERELY undermines the diversity themes that are really rather impactful in later books (Emonds Field going from pastoral backwater to thriving capital of its own kingdom, struggling with mass immigration but ALSO highlighting the benefits of cultural exchange. ALL of that is lost for the show) Absolutely with you on Daniel Henney as Lan. His performance WILL be what future portrayals are compared to. But part of the reason I think it works so well is precisely for the reasons I give for USING diversity. Asian heritage comes with a LOT of well understood cultural references. A LOT of Lan's character fits with Asian culture imo. Stoicism, self sacrfice, the importance of family honour, reverence of ancestors, strict social hierarchy etc etc. The man effectively IS a ronin (it's why I thought it was great to have Shienarans portrayed as Asian too. So audience conscious and unconscious biases actually directly support the characterisation. It's a lot like casting British or German as a villain, or casting French or Italian as a womaniser. Sure, it's exploiting stereotypes... but those building blocks can be used to make something special)
    I watched some of Shadow and Bone, really enjoyed it (still mean to finish, but... real life, sigh. YT is so much easier to consume in the free time I do have) and I was REALLY impressed by the casting as a whole. It SEEMED like the diversity added to the tone and world building, rather than just being there to check boxes. Probably helps that Jessica Mei Li is absolutely stunning though :P
    I just wish diversity were used with purpose, because for a visual medium, it can SURE communicate a lot of information AND exploit audience biases to subvert expectations.
    I have a close friend who is a Dune SUPERFAN.
    He loves the movie and is impatient as hell for part 2.
    He rates it WAY better than the other adaptations, even though he is fairly generous to those as well.

    • @Bookborn
      @Bookborn  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree that the hobbits (besides Sean Astin) may have been the weakest link when compared to their book-counterparts, but I have such a soft spot for them I don't mind. I do think Merry and Pippin lose their individual personalities in the movies, but...I can't help but love them anyway.

    • @DmGray
      @DmGray ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed, you just can't really fault Jackson's vision. (... for the LOTR :P)
      As I said, it just demonstrates that liberties absolutely can be taken when making an adaptation, and fans will actually forgive a lot if the end product is good ^^

    All respect to Andy Serkis, he has mostly defined the character for me and most people, especially now that he's reading the audio-books. However, before him there was an amazing performance of Gollum by Peter Woodthorpe on both the Ralph Backsi movie and the BBC radio-play (the latter's where he really shines). That Radio play left an indelible mark on me growing up, and sometimes I still read him thus.
    It's great when we all see and hear a literary character so distinctly with the help of an actor, but in a way it's sad if it limits the ability of the reader to imagine something unique on their own. Personally I think I can do much better then Disney's casting for Winnie the Pooh, even though they've all become quite iconic with good performances, but the tone just feels wrong to me, even if it's unusually close to the source material for Disney.
    I find the Hobbit movies somewhat more redeemable then you, but I totally agree about Martin Freeman (I don't think anyone disagrees there). He did great as Author Dent too in a less then perfect adaptation of Hitchhickers. And I love him as Watson.
    Hard agree on Alan Rickman, Rebecca Ferguson and Rosamund Pike! The others I still need to read/watch.
    Dafnee Keen as Lyra Belaqua and Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter (His Dark Materials), both but especially the latter made the role her own in ways that felt right for the story. Good casting across the board.
    The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe: I'm torn between George Henley and Lucy and Skandar Keynes as Edmund, fresh actors doing very well for the part. And then Tilda Swinton was so good as the witch she kept showing up in all the sequels were she wasn't in the books! lol
    Oh and the Whole cast of 1951's Christmas Carol (yes, it's a fantasy! ) do amazingly, but especially Alistair Sim as Scrooge and Michael Hordern as Marley (the later also did a great Gandalf BTW in the aforementioned radio-play).

    I’m actually not the biggest fan of Alan Rickman as Snape! I know he’s widely beloved in the roll and don’t get me wrong, he was an EXTREMELY talented actor, but I never really got over the fact that his casting forced the ageing up of so many other characters, which to me weakens a lot of scenes. Imagine the gut punch from watching scenes like the mirror of Erised visit or the night Voldemort came to Godric’s hollow if the actors for James and Lily looked 21. Alan Rickman to me also had too much authority, Snape in my head was a lot more pathetic and cowed and slimey than Alan Rickman could ever be

    Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are all so well-cast that it's hard to choose just one from each. I have to agree with Andy Serkis though, his performance is legendary. For GoT I'd have to say Charles Dance... but there are so many runners up (Peter Dinklage, Diana Rigg, Pedro Pascal, I actually think Alfie Allen is kinda underrated as Theon Greyjoy too). Paddy Considine also deserves a shoutout as King Viserys in House of the Dragon - what a performance!
    Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty from Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) is another all-time favourite. His partially-improvised speech from the climax of the film is such an iconic moment, it really elevated the source material imo.
    The Golden Compass movie from 2007 is one of those adaptations that I hate but thought had really great casting. The standout casting for me, probably because it was sooooo miscast in the BBC adaptation, was Sam Elliott as Lee Scoresby.

    I've never understood why people say Rickman was such great casting. Rickman is excellent in pretty much everything I've seen him in, but he's never been a good Snape to me. And that's not to say he's bad in the movies. He plays a great, memorable character.
    But Rickman isn't greasy, slimy or petty enough in the role. Rickman is great, but I don't think he's true to who Snape is in the books.

    Rebecca Ferguson is top in Dune. She is Lady Jessica forever (from Dune fans) and won Silo, waiting for her in Best Served Cold. Nobody cares about Hobbit. Ender’s Game is bad in adaptation. Bad! Bad!! Not getting the book. Ford… he is just ford in it but not any great. Now: Bladerunner? Minority Report? total recall? American Gods? Sandman? good omens? Those are kicking out things like hunger games or shadow and bone or Ender. The book in Ender’s Game (with Speaker for the Dead) is a base fundamental of sci-fi, Shadow and Bone is not so much impactful to fantasy. It was made here next to me about 20-30 minutes, my sister worked a lot on it. So she had a great job with SnB.

      @@Bookborn Let me try and put this in a non rude manner. I'm 50. You are literally decades behind on the reading list. That's not an insult I'm just old!
      What you're offering is a modern eye on classics, a person that feels the hype and just an intelligent reader.
      Ranking just isn't you're strength. For instance let me feed you some heresy, the wheel of time is basically a rip off of the belgariad by david eddings. Have you read the belgariad? it's kind of a mishmash of the shannara series and wheel of time series. You do you, just trying to point out why the lists are just not your strength.

      @HeavyTopspin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grazzitdvram Wow, that might be the worst take ever. Belgariad isn't bad per se, but WoT is better than it in every possible way, and the only way it "rips it off" is via use of long-standing fantasy tropes that can be found in dozens of series going back to even before LotR.

      @@grazzitdvram For this particular video, I'm unsure why I'd need a large backlog of reading, considering there really aren't that many adaptations to talk about. I think anyone, regardless of their reading status, can have an opinion on things.
      But...I'll address it anyway. Look, I know I'm only in my 30s, but I have read probably 500+ fantasy books. That's not a lot considering, you know, the world, but it makes me I think...decently well-read? I just don't really know how reading all of that matters when probably 90% of what I read doesn't have adaptations 🤷‍♀Your commentary would make much more sense, perhaps, on a video of "top ten fantasy of all time" or something of that nature.

    I simply cannot understand where are you coming from in regards with Moraine and Lan. Her first scene, where she enters the inn, do you see Moraine in that? I can see a stuck up Aes Sedai entering but it isn't Moraine. I think you mistake great acting for caracter interpretation. I can see on Rosamund Pike's face that she doesn't give a f**k about Steppin when she is asking Lan about Nynaeve. That scene is what is the perfect representation of their "friendship" in the show. She is being polite to him but she will never let him know the important stuff.
