Story Grid Scene Writing Workshop is the best money I have ever spent on learning the craft. In 5 weeks, I can honestly say that my skills have jumped from good amateur to the first rung of becoming a professional writer. Bonus points for making it not only challenging, Tim, but so much fun. My hat off to you and your amazing team.

Question! And anyone can answer this for me...do I write scenes to final draft status before moving into the next scene? I vaguely know where my story is going, but I don't fully know. So I'm writing it all out and calling this my first rough draft. But I'm confused...I hear work scene by scene and I think...does it need to be final draft worthy? Or can I keep doing what I'm doing. I want to work smarter, not harder...but I don't know what that looks like 😅. Thank you story grid! The videos and podcast have been helping tremendously 💕

Good question. You will save time if you don't edit your scenes until you've written the entire first draft. Once you have the full story down, you can see more clearly what you're working with. Your story might have changed from when you began, and some scenes might need to be cut, changes, or rearranged. After editing the whole book together with as many rounds as necessary, you will reach the final draft.

Usually when you write your first draft - finish it first, don't analyze and rewrite it before continuing. If you don't have the full story, yes, work on the scenes you already have and let the story and characters live in your imagination. Many authors start with a single scene in the middle or the end and work around them.

I disagree with the others giving input. I think go with your gut and what is comfortable for you. Maybe I can illustrate it best this way. When I was a young girl, if I made a mistake on a sheet of paper with ink pen, I’d throw the entire sheet away. Yeah, I went through a lot of paper, but, the finished product was impeccable. So, that’s my quirk 😂 I’m currently writing a memoir and working from an outline and notes from Story Grid for scene formatting. I write, rewrite, each scene until I’m satisfied. Then I move on to the next scene to further develop the story I want to convey. I never rewrite the next day or next few days because my eyes aren’t fresh. I hope this makes sense. You, have your own limits and quirks. There is no magic formula. I would say be true to yourself. Hey, you might never be published because your writing isn’t marketable. But, who cares? We engage in this art for ourselves first, and maybe the one person who would benefit from our endeavors of putting words to a page. Good luck!

I'm sure I can't afford the scene workshop right now. But I hope I can do it close to the end of the year.

    Which books are actual masterworks?

You have probably gone over this before but how long do scenes typically last? Are they linked to the pages in a chapter or are they just conflict that the character is going through until resolved?

Is listening to audio the same as analyzing a scene?

I'd say it's comparable if you make a lot of notes. You probably need to see the development of a scene at some point though. It's likely to be a slower process too!
