To Elaborate on my Idea from the End of this Video. I could see Gloom as some kind of new EXTREME Weather Effect. It would be the strongest Underground, while also creeping to the Surface and the least apparent in the Sky which is closest to the Sun. We might need Gloom Resistance in the form of Potions and even Armor, weve seen the Mushrooms in Hateno used as Lamps, maybe this will be our Gloom Resistance. The Duality of Light and Dark and Elightenment in General is a MASSIVE Theme of this Game.
The dynamics of Tears of the Kingdom seems pretty vast, is seems they thought of everything. Ice and fire, gloom and sunlight. This game may be bigger than we anticipated. Thank you Lim for your amazing coverage on Tears of the Kingdom.
Perhaps Link is more vulnerable to Malice than before because he's been injured so badly by it. Like a sort of Frodo stabbed by a Morgul blade situation. So he has to actually directly heal from the malice/gloom vs. just normal health-ups before. Orrrrrr Link has to use light heal NPCs, to help keep the rebellion going.
I would also say he's more vulnerable since unlink in BOTW, it's coming straight from the source, Ganondorf. It's more concentrated since it's more red than pink than before.
@@ACW-dn9wb Well there's actually an interesting difference between the malice in ToTK and BoTW. In one of the loading tips for BoTW, it's actually suggested that the malice we see isn't *actually* just concentrated malice, but rather malice-infused water. The gelatin-like appearance is just the form it takes, but the malice "tendrils" are pure malice. I think the raw, un-infused malice could simply be more dangerous than BoTW's tar-like malice "goop". Liquid malice seems to hold a form, and it doesn't diffuse into the air like raw malice appears to do. Perhaps being near raw malice can cause damage, as it isn't bound to a liquid medium and lashes out at link when he's near it. EDIT: I found the full tip decription, titled "Pools of Malice": "Poisonous bogs formed by water that was sullied during the Great Calamity. Coming into contact with one will hurt you." Initially I had assumed it referred to the mud that drowns you, but there's a few reasons I disagree with this potential interpretation. For one, the title of the tip is quite clearly referring to what is conventionally referred to as malice in BoTW, and the tip say it "hurts you" which more accurately describes the behavior of malice tar. That, and visually it makes the most sense.
What is notable is that the tower in the gameplay demo had no lights AND was overrun with monsters. Perhaps these lights ward off this "gloom" and the monsters managed to disable them allowing them to take it over.
Also Limcube, I am grateful for your channel and videos, as it makes me joyed to be able to know that I will always see the red notification dot under “subscriptions” everyday ❤
Limcube, could you please help me. For some reason, Link won’t enter bullet time when I backflip when doing a test of strength shrine skip. Do you know why?
I had the exact same idea! It’s the best way for Nintendo to limit underground exploration by essentially giving us a time limit down there in the form of gloom and makes it so you can’t just rush down there, you need to be prepared.
I feel like to stop people from staying underground for too long, they'll add gloom as an affect to take away health (like you said) but they wouldn't make an effect that's irreversible unless you have a specific item so maybe sunlight removes the effect. It would make sense if the gloom reversing food just let you explore underground for longer
Love these theories, they seem pretty plausible. I think the spotlights around the towers might just be so that the enemies around them can spot you in the sky. Sort of like in Wind Waker at the Forsaken Fortress.
I think the gloom is the same as the darkness in the Thyphlo Ruins. After all, this same pitch-black darkness was also shown in one of the trailers, and would naturally be everywhere underground. Also consider that in trailers, we've seen underground caves that aren't pitch-black, but we've also seen Link running through that pitch-black tunnel. Furthermore, consider the shadows being casted onto the surface by the sky islands. Surely blocking off the sun can't have a great effect on the life living on the surface. Monsters previously living in the darkness may now cone to the dark surface.
I mean consider that there is precedent in Zelda for the entire sky to be covered and the kingdom to be absolutely fine. The cloud barrier from skyward sword covered the whole sky, with floating islands above it, yet the sky looked clear from below. Presumably, that barrier is still there, and these islands still above them, which is why they don't seem to have been ripped from the earth in most cases, just appeared in the sky.
it might just be the look of the hearts in the new game, but you can see that theres some light around them when theyre normal, your idea of gloom possibly being a debuff that limits your hearts could make more sense
I've decided to 100% breath of the will myself for the first time ever before ToTK comes out, currently at 42.21% with 228 total koroks found. Also I really like your idea about the effects of gloom, it would fit with the games darker theme perfectly.

I would love that Don't Starve "avoid darkness" feature, there's some reason why they have avoided showing night time, and that previews had the time of day locked
Tears of the kingdom seems to be diversifying the elements and mechanics, so I agree with you thinking gloom is some sort of status effect, maybe caused by touching malice, that saps health like poison. (Since we saw an item that causes a bright flash of light in the previews, as you said, maybe for flash bang arrows, i think having more effects in the game that BotW is basically a given.) Remember: since the previews have shown that gemstones have corresponding elemental AOEs, it is safe to assume that diamond arrows, will be some sort of light/divine arrow, since diamonds in BotW are said to harness the power of light, which may counteract gloom.) How i believe the effects of gloom might work: refilling hearts doesn’t remove the status so maybe we need specific items or potions to cleanse (purify) Link of the status effect. Like certain status effects from the Monster Hunter series can only be removed by certain plants and such. Or if anyone has seen certain anime with spiritualistic themes, were water from sacred springs can cure blights and evil. Since the motives of light and dark (the sky and the underground) are very prevalent, i think also the themes of the divine and evil will be very important as well. I don't agree though with the part with the effect caused by walking in darkness, though. In the ad Nintendo showed us, Link was walking around just fine, without a potion effect under his hearts. what I believe gloom is or how we get it is either afflicted enemies (As you briefly touched upon; in some shots of the second trailer we see Lizalfos that a infused with malice, maybe some sort of undead/curses zombie enemies! Maybe zombie enemies can apply the gloom effect.), or from a more evolved form of malice. As you said, the malice looks slightly different that when we first saw it in BotW. Malice usually takes the form of darkish goop, with some rib-like protrusions sticking up, and a malice eye here and there, so it seems like malice is trying to create a shape or something alive. In the shots in which we see the malice grabbing Links arm with the Master Sword, it's a bit more reddish and almost seems alive and sentient, kind of like tentacles of some sort of creature. Malice in itself is the physical form of evil, that is always growing and evolving, and now it has reached a point were it isn't just a evil puddle of slime, but a swirling semi-conscious mass of tentacles, that has finally reached a form or body it is satisfied with and maybe even turned into a new type of enemy. Another argument to support this would be the fact that Tears of the Kingdom is leaning heavily into the Ghibli inspiration, Princess Mononoke in particular; Links cursed right arm being representative of that. That movie also has enemies that are covered in stuff similar to malice, which causes extreme pain and decay upon touching it. So i think gloom is something like that. Thanks for another interesting video that really makes one think. Can’t wait to actually play the game after almost basically 5 years!
I first played BotW a year and a half ago on my roommate's switch and it was the reason I bought my own switch. Back then I remember this nebulous idea of BotW2 and just being excited a sequel would be coming out in over a year.... Crazy how fast it went
