Cutting back on buying stuff is a great idea. I think most of us in the knife community already have enough blades to last several lifetimes! Lately, I have been revisiting some old knives that haven't been carried for years and am having a blast with them!
Hi Erica, all the best for 2024. I usually carry a combo of the Farmer X and the 5" Knipex Cobra pliers, but I also like the Deluxe Tinker, if I need a space saving alternative.
Nice carry, and a good start to the new year! Today the knives I was carrying were a titanium Defcon Cutter and a Case trapper that I just got as a birthday gift. Cheers, E!
Always been a fan of fixed blades, even though I don’t own many. Definitely agree on buying less too. My collection is totally out of control. Nobody will ever be able to keep up with all the new stuff coming out, nor do we need to. Today in the pocket, is the Spyderco Paisan, pocket sword. Cool channel and very informative.
9:22 - Agreed, I have a tinker deluxe near me at all times. Usually at the desk, in a backpack, in the car or in a jacket. The only thing I miss from it is a bit driver, but im experimenting with fabricating one that can take the place of the phillips one / cork screw part. And preferrebly open the other way. Hard to do though, need to change the internal liners to fit and all that.
Great vid! Agree with you on taking a step back from buying knives this year and appreciating what you own. Also starting to appreciate a small fixed blade a lot more myself.
I'm definitely cutting back. I am happy with the We Smooth Sentinel and a Para 3. Every other knife I buy is a safe queen or an impulse buy or me chasing fads. None of them speak to me the way those two do.
Happy New Year! Being a fixed blade guy - wicked looking forward to your fixed blade reviews - therefore you have already made my New Years (and guaranteed more viewership from me - TY!).
80CRV2 is good stuff. One of my favorite fixed blade knives is in this stuff. It has some kind of surface treatment, not a speck of rust/corrosion yet. It's a CUR Custom Blades "SWIFT" with Firehose Micarta. It's one of my best fixed blade knives. Can't say enough about CUR...
I know you love what you love but what about a Swiss Army Fieldmaster? It's like a Super Tinker but adds one layer, a wood saw. Cool knife! I just carry my Kizer and if I need a saw or pliers, I step into my garage.
Agree on that a slightly worn kydex can begin to rattle. Prefer leather for fixed blades. Just needs a bit of care if being walking i the forest during downpour
Nice vid, and Im glad to see you're enjoying! Despite being a country boy and growing up hunting and camping I ended up switching Majors in College into IT because there are limited positions in the Wildlife Management field. Because of my varied interests, hobbies, and career I've carried a bit of everything. Being in IT as well as a DIY guy I always liked Cybertool M from Victorinox because of the precision screwdriver and the small pliers for electrical connections and jumpers on computer boards. Yes the CT M is a chunky boy but being a DIY guy I like the versatility of it. Unfortunately do to a chronic illness I'm no longer working and spend more time in sweatpants or shorts the pliers are necessary so the weight of the "M" isnt justifiable to me anymore so I have them around the house but not in my pocket. Being a Tinkerer myself I've starting working on modifying knives including Victorinox and am considering a "Compact Cybertool X" which would keep the precision driver, scissor layer, replace the small blade with the Combo tool can/bottle opener qhich would cut it down to a 3 layer knife. I]m also working on a couple 84mm Custom Compact Cadet X models with the Main blade/nail file layer, scissors layer, and a combo tool electricians blade layer. The electricians blade being just a sheepsfoot blade really. Most of the Time these days I have a Victorinox Executive or Minichamp on me and then a mainblade like a Buck 112 Slim select, a Victorinox Pioneer X, or a traditional Case XX knife, preferably in CV or CS now. I current have a Case small Stockman that was my Grandfathers that I had traded him for another case mini trapper when I was 10. He broke the tip of the Clippoint blade so I reprofiled it into a modified droppoint and I'm working on replacing the Case logo on the scale that had fallen out at some point when he carried it. I'm using a piece of brass I cut from a damaged blowtorch tip that was also his and I'll engrave it with his initials. I have a number of his knives that I carry from time to time encluding his original 1984 Buck 426 he had with him anytime he was hunting, fishing, or just on the farm. My Brother n law lust got me one of the bigger versions of the Case Medium Stockman pocketknives on CS that I planned to carry as my daily driver but the back spring holding the sheepsfoot blade is dangerously loose and will not snap shut or open for that mater so Im working on warranty repair or replacement now. The blade is misground as well and doesnt stay flat the entire length of the blade. I like that custom sodbuster you have there. Maybe Ill try something like that with a Large Sodbuster. Could also add a thumbstud.. hmm Sorry for the wall of text.
Apologies' for adding to the wall but I agree that EDC fixed blades a great. Carried a Buck Vangaurd when I was young and then I have a CKRT Minimalist and a BK11 that sometimes carry in a scout config on my belt.
Best Wishes Erica i went to a Winter Circus today that was awesome, i am using another linerlock knife with wooden handles and personal inlays zitanium. If i lived not in a Urban place then that Gecko would be propably all what i need really awesome fixy
Just found the channel and enjoying the content so far, fully agree the Super Tinker is the one! I change up my other knives but make sure to carry the Vic every day for work and outside also! Happy New Year, hope its a good one for you 🙏
Merry New Year, funny I’m on the hunt for a Fixed Blade EDC. Looking forward to your Future Fixed Blade EDC Knives. Really like the wallet your Sporting ❤️👊👍
Your father is a smart guy. I still carry my old Boy Scout knife. A bird and fish knife almost 60 years old.i just realized everything I edc is 15 years or mor old.
You gotta be the best equipped person in the dog park. I carry the Farmer X Alox with a pair of Vise Grips, but will check out the “Sooper” Tinker. Have not seen the Knipex in person so hard to pull the trigger on that one. I have the same problem with side button flashlights. 2024 Karma headed your way.
always carrying my Boos Blades Aero now since its been a grail ive been after for years and finally got one made lol god has been good to me and the family and many more blessings to come this new year!! hope you have an amazing year and cant wait to see some awesome new content!!
Hi Erica! So I saw that pocket crucifix you carry that was made by Catholic EDC and I make pocket and full size rosaries and give them to people who may want one and I'd love to make one for you and send it to you 100% for free. If you want one just let me know!
Hi Erica, I'm trying to decide between K390 from Seki City and MagnaCut in SpyderCo Salt series. I know you really like the K390 from Seki City. Could you comment on the K390 vs. the MagnaCut? I'm not too worried about K390 not very stain resistant, but if the MagnaCut's toughness and edge retention are as good as or better than the K390, then I probably want to go with the MagnaCut.
I had a scenario that made up my mind on leatherman- like multi tool or sak. A chicken jumped over the coop and I caught it and grabbed the sak and couldn't one hand it luckily I had the other on a belt holster and that sold me. Right-enough tool for the situation.
Forrest Hanks Puzzle Hank, Spyderco Yojumbo in CPM M4 with DNA Lasering Scales, Spydiechef customized by Scott at Big Bore Knife and Gear, Victorinox Pioneer X, Rough Ryder Chunk Bolt Pen, RovyVon Aurora A1 Flashlight and Zippo Lighter with Zippo Butane Insert.
I absolutely LOVE that Jeff Davidson Gecko!! You've ALREADY got a great patina going on that knife! You make a good point about the benefits of carrying a small EDC fixed blade...less moving parts, yet the same size as your Bugout or whatever.. It only took five minutes for you to break out not one, but TWO, top tier, ELITE Mom Jokes with "tighter than your Mom" and "thicker than your Mom's ass"!!! 2024 is off to a great Mom Joke start!! So I'm guessing that the ONE person out of over ten THOUSAND people who was offended by your Mom jokes last year won't be finishing this video! You know, the person who Nickie said was "free to watch or free to fly the fuck on by"!!! 🤣. Awesome video Erica!!! ❤❤❤
Good luck with your no necessity year. I'm not committing to that, but I am trying to slow down the "luxrury"/"sport" shopping. I'm AutiHD and I kind of feel compelled to complete sets or systems which is really expensive, when you step back and add up the finanical damage. I'm not putting myself in debt (other than using paypal 4 payments) but I'm not saving as much as I should be.
I'm not going to participate in the challenge. That would be like asking me not to breathe. My pocket dump of knives is Kizer Begleiter 2 in N690 and end cut carbon fiber and a Civivi Bulltusk in Ultem and Damascus.
I’m glad you’re challenging yourself by not buying anything you don’t “need”. That said you damn well now that you’ve committed to it that is the time Spyderco will put out a Native 5 lightweight in K390😂. Of course maybe that was your plan all along 🤔

Love that!
I just treated myself to an SRK and a Victorinox Ranger. I was carrying a Huntsman but wanted a Ranger now I have a spare in case one goes walkabout.

How much do they charge to turn a sodbuster into that, except with ultem and no micarta?

I frequently edc a Victorinox farmer, White River ATK. I don’t know if it’s the size but the fact fixed blades are more in your face for the same size
Nice!
That's one hell of a challenge you're taking on. Pretty sure I would fail the hell out of that because my motorcycle build is far from being done. Lol
Are you feeling better from that Italian food mate?!
A hell of a lot better. Still dehydrated but at least I don't need to use the walls and coumters for balance from being so dizzy

What are your thoughts on the Victorinox Deluxe Tinker for EDC?
Too much

They aren’t comparable. I wish I could help more- I’m sorry!

Good video Erica!
I am carrying a maxamet native 5 lightweight,and a Gen 2 fenix eo1,and a maglite led solitaire for a backup light

To me fixed blades are for heavier duty work. Most people dont need them. I like them and theyre fun to use, just not as practical as a folder.
There are so many light fixies. That aren’t for heavy duty work. The Gecko is one of them! And very light/small/practical!
That's a nice fixed blade I like edc and bushcraft
