I lived in Gilmerton (Drum Crescent, off Ferniehill Drive) from the late 50s to the mid 60s when my parents moved to south east England. I remember the narrow pavements, so many stone walls, and frequent showers, but the traffic was much lighter in those days. You wondered about the name of the stream under the bridge over Ellen's Glen. I didn't know what it's called until I looked on a map: Burdiehouse Burn, then further downstream it seems to be known as Niddrie Burn. It finds its way to the sea somewhere between Joppa and Musselburgh, so no connection with the Water of Leith.
