Music & vocals by Farya Faraji, based on traditional South Slavic and Balkanic musical motfs. The instruments used the traditional catalogue of Bulgarian folk music before the 18th century: a saz-like instrument, the gaida bagpipe, and the kaval flute.
Tsar Kaloyan, so called because of the combination of his name Ioanitsa and “kalos,” in Greek, the latter due to his handsome looks, was Tsar of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1196 to 1207. The Second Bulgarian Empire was the successor state of the First Bulgarian Empire that had been annihilated by Basil II, dubbed the Bulgar Slayer. @@InAeternumRomaMater This never existed, this is a concept only Romanian historians are spreading to feel better about themselves and what the Romanians never managed to achieve, and that is powerful Kingdom. There is only one evidence that is the letter sent by Roman write, that's it, if you base your conclusions based of this you should change your approach.
@@InAeternumRomaMater First we have to begin by stating what a Vlach is, because I see most Romanians still think that Vlachs are Wallachian and that they are only Wallachian. Do not forget that Vlach means Latinized Balkan person, there are Greek-Vlachs, Albanian-Vlachs, Bulgarian-Vlachs, Gagauz-Vlachs, Avar-Vlachs, Moldavian-Vlachs and so on. Very simply put, the Romanian historians say “Vlachs are Vlachs are Proto-Romanians and that’s it. End of discussion.” Bulgarian historians, on the other hand, say “Vlachs are sometimes ethnic Vlachs, but sometimes are shepherd highlanders instead”, plus a bunch of other things. Some of those things are f.e. a quote from the main source on these events (Niketas Choniates) who uses the name Vlachs, but who also at one point says that the Byzantines previously called the Vlachs “Moesians”, but now call them “Vlachs”. And Moesians was how the Byzantines called the Bulgarians of the First Bulgarian Empire (as part of the common antiquization tendencies of their educated elites). So the Bulgarian scholars then say “See? He says that at that time Vlachs means Bulgarians, so in the best case scenario it’s not as simple as you put it”. Then the Romanian ones reply “Yeah, but sources also speak of “Vlachs AND Bulgarians”, so they’re clearly not the same”. There have been and still are heated discussions concerning the origins of the so-called Asen brothers. From one side, the modern Romanian historians consider them purely as Vlachs and that’s indeed how they are called in practically all contemporary sources. The Bulgarian historians, on the other hand, consider them either as Bulgarians (Moesians) or Cumano-Bulgarians, based on various other arguments taken from the contemporary sources, the linguistic analyses of Asen’s name etc. The foreign historians mostly consider these discussions to be useless and sparked by modern nationalism. We have to note that there was a Vlach population in the Second Bulgarian Empire, but this population was not as significant as Romanian historians are trying to make it. This is like saying, well the biggest minority in Romania are Hungarians and there are Hungarian politicians, therefore the country should be named Romano-Hungaria. This doesn't make any sense, we also had a Armenian Kind, should've we name the Kingdom Bulgarian-Armenian Kingdom? The population of Vlachs was around 15%, we had more slavs than Vlachs, why didn't we name it Slavo-Bulgarian Empire? Why Vlach-Bulgarian Empire, when Vlachs were not even that big of a minority in the Empire.
“As Robert Lee Wolff noted in 1947, much of this scholarship has started from particular premises which have, or have had, little to do with the northern Balkans in 1185-1186, and much to do with Bulgaria and Romania in the twentieth century” (quote taken from Paul Stephenson’s “Byzantium’s Balkan frontier”, page 288). John V. A. Fine in his “The Late Medieval Balkans”, pages 12-13, also agrees: “Though it is impossible to resolve the problem on the basis of the surviving sources, it is worth pointing out that the issue is not as important as many twentieth-century scholars think. The twelfth century was not a period of nationalism. Bulgarians and Vlachs had been living together amicably in Bulgaria, Macedonia, and northern Thessaly for years... They jointly inhabited Bulgaria, where the Bulgarian Slavs, the largest element in the population, were chiefly peasants farming the lowlands, while the Vlachs with their flocks dominated the mountains... There is no evidence of any “national” conflict or rivalry between these two people at this time. Thus the modern academic controversy, being over an issue of little relevance to the Middle Ages, is probably best dropped.” The population was likely “mixobarbarian” (as the Byzantine authors of the time called it), consisting of Bulgarians/Slavs, Vlachs, Cumans etc, but due to the already established strong ethnic identity of the Bulgarians and because of their “anti-Byzantine character”, it became central and dominant in the newly-restored state): www.academia.edu/35879986/Cumans_and_Vlachs_in_the_Second_Bulgarian_Empire
Conclusion: The Empire was very diverse, changing the name of a whole empire because the origins of the Ruler are of Vlach is beyond unserious. This is like me changing a name of the Byzantine empire because they had a lot of Bulgarians in their Empire or Romanians. One of the Byzantine Emperors was of Bulgarian origin, should we call the Byzantine empire Greco-Bulgarian. Wallachia was also used a geographical term, Vlachs refers to Romance-Speaking people of the Balkans. So Asen could've been of Cuman origin, Moldavian, Albanian, Serbian, Greek and so on. Changing the name of our Empire in the history books is completely unnecessary, as we had rulers of Armenian, Greek and Serbian origins as well. Moreover, if I remember correctly and if I'm mistaken you can correct me the Romanian Kingdom was mainly controlled by German-Hungarian dynsties, why don't you change your name to Germano-Hungarian-Romanian kingdom?

This whole statement neglects hundreds of years of history and state, the fact that you said the empire was found on the basis of Vlach revolt shows how much of a knowledge you have on this topic. Niketas Choniates did not point how the Vlachs formed the Empire as they were playing very small part in the Kingdom, matter of fact the Cumans were playing more significant part than the Vlachs. Noboyd refered to the Bulgarian Kingdom as Vlacho-Bulgarian empire, this comes from Romanian historians. I have no idea what to say, you think that the Kingdom was founded on Vlachs, which is historically false, the Kingdom have a long long history even before the Vlachs were a thing on Romanian lands. I would suggest you to watch this video and learn more about Bulgarian history because at this point your statements are historical inaccuracies. Second Bulgarian Empire is modern term, and its used to SHOW the second Bulgarian empire, the actual name is just Bulgarian Empire. Moreover, the official language of the kingdom was Bulgarian, poetry, writtings and everything was in Bulgarian, even the church was based of Bulgarian language. Old Church Slavonic was used, which was based of Bulgarian dialect. You might question that as far as I'm concerned so here is evidence

Ivancu, Radu and Basarab are of Bulgarian origin names. Where are those genetic tests? You did not list the source. I do not understand how its not the same thing, one of the fighters for freedom of your country is Hungarian, you had Hungarian king and many Hungarians died for Romania. I don't see how they are not the same, do not forget I apply your logic, this is not my logic. If that’s the case, then the answer is simple - because the Second Bulgarian Empire was called Bulgaria, not Wallachia. And it wasn’t just called Bulgaria - it was Bulgaria. Its language was Bulgarian, its courtly traditions and symbolism were Bulgarian (though with a very strong Byzantine influence), its legacy was Bulgarian, and most of its people were apparently Bulgarian as well. By the way, Pope Innocent III never refered to the kingdom as Vlacho-Bulgaria, but just as Bulgaria.

Conclusion: The Empire spoke Bulgarian, the official language of the Empire was Bulgarian and the church was operating on Old Church Slavonic which old Bulgarian. Vlachs did not play such significant role as you think and we should change the name of the Empire? Every historian would laugh if he hears this. By this logic we should change the name of the Romanian Kingdom, as many other tribes and nations played part in it.
@@InAeternumRomaMaterExcept the thing is, the Empire was claimed to be a Bulgarian one by the people that created it themselves. Sure they called themselves rulers of the Bulgarians and the Vlachs, but so did Simeon call himself Tsar of the Bulgarians and the Romans yet he was undoubtedly a Bulgarian Tsar.
Fact is that the Asen dynasty even if it possibly had a Vlach origin (I think it's more likely they were mixed), in the end actually claimed themselves to be a Bulgarian dynasty and centered themselves in Bulgaria, with territories north of the danube being merely vassal territories. Not to mention that them being Vlachs but choosing to identify as Bulgarians does actually make them Bulgarians, the right to self identification goes out to everyone.
Also not to mention that the reason Bulgaria today has so little Vlachs is because Bulgarians themselves are a mix of Slavs, Bulgars and Thracians with other minor groups. They're a mixed people's and the Vlachs south of the danube chose to join the mix too, so really whatever was left of that legacy would've become Bulgarian by the end too.
This Vlacho-Bulgarian Empire thing is just Romanians claiming an Empire that while sure they played a part into creating, it ultimately wasn't theirs really. It served the interests of Bulgaria, with North of The Danube being a really secondary interest to the state.
So conclusion is. It is indeed most accurate to call it the Second Bulgarian Empire.

Moesia was central for the First Bulgarian Empire too which had a golden age of slavic liturgy and whatnot and not once were Vlachs mentioned in it and not once was anything Vlach found. I agree the Vlachs of the past were more in Bulgaria than today but 50% of Moesia is just a lie.
Second Bulgarian Empire was really militarily superior and superpower state under the rule of Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II.

@@Anatolian_grikWe have always been originally Christian. During the Ottoman empire, they forced us to convert to Islam. Many refused, and few converted. They ruled us to be Muslim, but it was never something we did by choice. Bulgaria has always been a Christian country.

Some facts about out Kaloyan. He was hit by a mace in the head in his younger years. It is very likely that he has terrible headache in his later years because of that. He had some rage issues because of that. He was 188 - 190 cm tall, a giant for his time. He defeated the crusader army that sacked Constantinople.

Based Farya made a song about the most underrated King of the Medieval period.
Kaloian (Ioniță Caloian in Romanian) is of the Asen Dynasty. It was basically the dynasty that brought Vlachs (including Romanians of Wallachia) and Bulgarians together. I, as a Romanian, have huge respect for that dynasty and it demonstrates that when even two Balkan peoples forget their differences, they can terrify even the mightiest Empires. Shame that sincere friendship is more rare than 1000 chests of gold without owner and hatred more common than the blades of grass.

There is no evidence of any Vlachs in Bulgaria at that time. Much less an alliance.
The only non-Bulgarians who took part were some Cuman horse archers whose sole task was to draw out and bait the Latins into an ambush once. This is recorded by the Latins and the Greeks themselves who were spectating from within the city walls.

@@numenoreaneternity6682 It's not. Romanian is the 3rd closest language to Latin, and in a lot of cases Italians and Romanians can understand each-other. It is, yes, much closer to Latin than French and Portuguese, say.
It's undeniable that Romanian has significant Slavic elements in language, literature, culture and so on, but at the same time it also shares a lot with Greek, for examples the words fustă/φούστα, stafidă/σταφίδα, trandafir/τριαντάφυλλο, and so on.
The language in itself is a Daco-Romance language.
The Thracian tribes, including Dacians which are considered Romania's ancestors, were one of the primary peoples in the Balkans. Their existence is documented by ancient Romans and Trajan even waged wars against them. They did not just vanish.
The Greeks had ever only controlled only the shores of Romania, yet that does not explain how 3% of the Romanian vocabulary is Greek [and I'm not just referring to scientific terms that obviously come from Greek, but words such as the previous examples.]
One might argue that for example "stafidă" is also in Bulgarian, which is true, and that could have been passed down during Bulgarian rule over Romania.
But then again what about the influence that Bulgarian didn't pick up on?
Old Church Slavonic was a language meant to help Christianize the Balkans & Slavs. Saying that something was written in Romania in Church Slavonic doesn't hold you any leverage nor does it enable you to say "you're just Latinized Bulgarians" or something. That's because Church Slavonic was also used by St. Cyril and Methodius in Moravia/Czechia, before they were thrown out by the west-leaning rule which opposed the use of Old Slavonic; does that also make the Czechs Bulgarian? I'd say no.
Genetically, all Balkaners are similar. We've coexisted for centuries to say the least and with all the back and fourth occupations and whatnot it's natural that there's some ethnic overlapping and mixing, not to mention the fact that the Slavs came in by a migration, which does create a lot of overlap.
The 11th-century Persian writer, Gardizi, wrote about a Christian people “from the Roman Empire”, inhabiting the lands along the Danube.
Historian Adolf Armbruster identified this people as the Romanians.

An interesting fact - his pre-regnal name was Yoanitza, from what we know, which means "Little Ivan/John". He was nicknamed by the Bulgarian nobility as Kolayan, which comes from the greek calo and Giannis, which means "John the Beautiful". In the same time the Byzantines called him Skylogiannis, which means "John the Dog".

Have you dabbled in any chinese-style music? I'd love to see a Sassanid-Tang song, about Peroz III and his son Narsieh, who fled to Imperial China following the fall of the Sassanid Empire.
I definitely want to compose Chinese music in the future, I just need to take some time learning it and studying it because I don’t wanna do a stereotype, but once I’m confident I understand the style I’m definitely starting!

Slavs are Thracians basically, according to Greek, Turkic, Austro-Hunagrian and some French sources, funny enough I remember even seeing one Albanian-Italian source on it. I know it's not "official taught history" but it was pretty official until around 90s and is widely considered the truth even now days since the "currently official history" is based on one single document which was later proven politically charged and inspired, and it was debunked for false information (ie. writing of events that happened hundreds/thousands of years earlier as if they happened then or making up events). Plus the mixing of people in Balkans, you can trace Thracian people all across South Slavic countries or even Greece and Romania. So I would say he's done some Thracian music already.

@@Svevladovich It's widely thought that they are because, their beliefs and traditions were mostly the same or extremely similar, and so was everything they've built or used. While Thracian exact haplotype is known (I2a), Illyrian one isn't known so it's not a 100% sure thing but it is a widely believed thing. Most probably, they were two big groups of the same people that may even have not been united but Greeks and Romans put them down as the same group.

Ancient Slavs did also live in some regions of modern Belarus but they also spanned through the Balkans, all the way to where Greece is today originally. The Slavic migration is a myth perpetuated by Germanic school of history which was based on a single document proven fake for describing events that never happened to describing events from centuries ago as if they happen at the time of writing for political gain
