The final permutation fugue is absolutely glorious. The chromatic nature of the first subject does not allow for an entry in a major key, so Bach goes unusually far away from the tonic with his modulations. Permutation fugues are generally much harder to pull off than many people think, coming up with a convincing framework just consisting of thirds, sixths and octaves and then making three distinct subjects out of it that are all convincing melodically, that is really difficult.
