I looked up the performance history of this opera. Apparently, it was staged alone, or performed as concert only, or mixed with parts of other works, including contemporary settings. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dido_and_Aeneas#Performance_history
The performers seemed to have fun. As to 'changes' in the content: I would guess that in Purcell's days changes happened all the time due to the location and available musicians. Perhaps even changes to 'please' a particular audience, i.e. different aristocratic courts where the opera was performed. Remember: this kind of music was considered entertainment at the time (just like Shakespeare plays earlier were considered 'entertainment'. I enjoy updates and additions in L'Arpeggiata's performances. They always offer high levels of musicianship.
Though I can't comment on how accurate L'arpeggiata's latest iteration of this work is. Owing to a different cast, it is certainly less dynamic and somewhat weaker than the avrotros klassiek version of nine years ago. (A flawless performance IMO). However, the chorus, as always, was superb.

The actual Dido and Aeneas starts at 26:45
Zanimljivo, Didona sa mediteranskim i južnoameričkim prizvukom

what is this? most of this is not Purcell's Dido. The "Away, away" duet is recognizable......
