Well I'm decadent and perform baroque. Why not both? Life is short, get the most out of it and don't judge others for trying as long as they're not hurting anyone else.
Absolutely spectacular. For those of us who have found a lifelong joy & inspiration in Purcell's genius, this is a near-incomparable performance of his early opera. Not only do we hear the unique sound of (some) authentic instruments, the thoroughly modern singers somehow manage to convey a similar "authentic" sound in their voices, perfectly integrated. Interesting, too (per Mr. Elgersma's note) that he, countertenor, is listed as "alto;" just as Purcell seems to have called himself. Evan the videography, unknown as it was to Purcell & his audience, seems perfectly expressive & "authentic," giving deserved focus on these superb players. Thanks to all.

I'm English, but the French do it best! I love the enthusiasm as well as the professionalism of M. Tubery and his group. Purcell comes to life with them; not a trace of stodge here. Wish they'd make more recordings of this composer.
In many ways Purcell's music was made for French performance techniques. He drew influence from various sources, English folk music, English church music, and most pertinent to this discussion, the French style of the age.
Yes; remember that the French had many composers of the time writing semi-operas like this, Marais, Lully and especially Rameau, whilst the English had the single towering genius of Henry Purcell who, dying young, caused a national musical calamity.
