  • The video and images supplied by Unified Command show up close the damage to the ship. It's not a walk in the park for Salvors to prepare the ship to be removed from the site.
    Some of these images have been modified to give viewers a sense of scale of the job that lies ahead. Thanks to Unified Command for suppling these images for us today.

      Me too still hard to believe. I preferred to take the tunnel, however, when there was tunnel congestion or an accident in the tunnel I then drove over the bridge.

    As a former deckhand on merchant ships these images of the damage are horrifying. Imagine the amount of force it took to break that mooring winch into pieces as if it were made of plastic. Thank you for the upload.

    Glad you had a safe journey Cpt. Andy. Just imagine the terror on the bridge, when they realized they weren't gonna make it.     There is a IMO (International Maritime Regulation) that requires all ships have a certain amount of visibility in front of them. That is why the older container ships have a slope on the height of the container stack as you move towards the bow. This is why the newer ones have the pilot house forward (the 18k plus TEU ships). If you want to see something, take a look at the Bob Hope class LMSRs - They had to cut the bridge off and elevate it one deck to get the visibility in front of the ship. Thanks again Capt Andy!     I have not seen any of this footage before...Astounding does not describe this damage !! I'm surprised the entire bow was not severed. I know you're glad to be back in Georgia for a few days and sunny weather 😎
    Lol...went over to the Jekyll pier yesterday, caught 3 flounder and a bucket of crabs...had a nice breeze from the SW and about 85° It was really nice over there. Look forward to you getting back to the Dali and thanks for this great update!

    That bridge isn't made of thin metal. That steel is 1, 1-1/2 and 2 inch thick girders, possibly thicker in some spots. Not easily cut. It takes time. Thanks for the video. Jon

    I got a chuckle during that earlier video when you were laser focused on the big crane slinging that big claw around. Hundreds of tons of steel hanging on the Weeks passing by unnoticed.

    Cameras on the bow or not, doesn’t matter. The ship had lost power, no propulsions or steerage. At that point, the ship was going to go where it wanted to go.

    This was great.... gives a really good appreciation of the massive scale of both the ship and the bridge... that column supporting the bridge just cut in half looks like a small house upl close.... man!! This was carnage

    Thanks for showing that detail, cause that's where My interest lies. I saw some of it before, however, this one had more detail than the other one they showed. Very Very good. I used to work at a printing factory, and in one of the torn containers, you could see big rolls of paper, and I knew right then, that at least for that container, is probably going for a printing factory somewhere, and now, well, it's trash I suppose. I wonder what will happen to all those containers of Stock? Did you know they have containers way down underneath the Deck of the Dali, that's even more containers. Wow! Thanks Minorcan. Terry

    hey Captain Andy, great you been able to share these images from Unified Command, very interesting stuff and pretty epic to see the scale up close and personal - its a dangerous game of Jenga pulling this puzzle to pieces, its so impressive to see how the ship and the containers helped to absorb the huge stresses put upon it when the bridge collapsed, you have to consider how everything worked in favor of saving the ship and managing to keep it upright - can you imagine where we'd be if the Dali had capsized, ye God's it would be such a huge mess, at least this way the ship and vast majority of its goods can be salvaged along with the bridge's steel
    i'm not surprised at the use of cutting charges as i mentioned a few times before, it makes perfect sense to do some of the work remotely and keep folk out of danger, these cuts are going to be crucial and i'm sure there has been so much thought gone into this process, plus i think its good to see things getting blown up, i just hope the careful planning will prevent any of the major trusses from hitting the ship anywhere about the waterline, all calculated in i'm sure and as with building detonation, cable will be put in place to keep parts from going astray - this will make an epic documentary when the time comes, and of course it goes without saying lives were lost here, but will never be forgotten, as with all these disasters from around the world

    Fantastic explanation, I think there’s a few people that comment on this bridge collapse that just do not understand the enormous size and weight of some of those bits of metalwork, they seem to think it should all be cleared by now. They cannot comprehend that a salvage job like this has to be done in a sequence for safety and not to cause more damage to the ship. If one of those sections of metalwork slipped it could rip the side of the hull out and let it fill with water creating an even bigger mess. Plus, have they found the last workman’s body yet? If not he still has to be carefully searched for beneath all that hanging steel.

    This video shows how dangerous the environment is in which the workers are operating. Obviously great care needs to be exercised in order to ensure the safety of the workers, even if this delays of the operation and incurs more cost. It is essentially that there are no other injuries and deaths.

    These days with cheap 4K cameras, you'd think they would have it ringed with cameras.
    Any word on the stolen cars exposed in containers?
    The images of thick steel and heavy concrete twisted into pretzels is amazing. The sight if the spalled concrete and twisted rebar inside the broken pier is also interesting. I image it will be highlighted in engineering schools for some time to come.

    det cord is used for all kinds of cutting

      Well, it has to be a little stronger than det cord to 100% cut the metal.
      Yes, det cord will be used between the charges.
      Yes, det cord will breach a door with a little help or cut wood, but it would just blacken these beams.
      Math and timing for the controlled explosion will be done and verified 3-4 times. Each blast will have an engineering drawing.

    More than likely, they’ll cut the parts of the bridge from either side of the ship and leave the section that’s on the ship itself to remove the ship from the site. The section of bridge on the ship can be removed from another location

    Bowfront view will be either electronic or be supplied by one of the ships officers or the captain's mate during shoreside operations or whenever such control is required and infos are then transmited to the bridge.

    That WAS part of a windlass albeit cast isn't truly impact resistant. The other pieces of deck that ripped open above that from the road bed and bridge sure looks to be 2" thick and just tore like paper.

    You would think that a ship that size would have multiple, high resolution TV cameras to show all sides of the water around it. Not only for monitors on the Bridge, but with software to analyze the video streams for anything that could cause a collision with anything.

      It's about transportation, not entertainment.

      @@lisette2060 Only am idiot would consider the use of a navigational aid comprised of video cameras and monitors on the bridge to be entertainment. They would only be used while in port, unless they encountered trouble during a voyage.
      I suppose that all of the monitors that I used to maintain in US Army Air Traffic Control towers were used for video games, instead of weather data?

    When they were cutting some of the structures, they were dropping them in the water. Putting a chain on the piece when it is above water eliminates all the fun of trying to find it in the murky water. Unless they WANT to leave the bottom of the channel covered in debris.

      I don’t think it’s deep enough to leave debris in the channel. The ships are so heavy in the water I think it’s only a few feet clearance.

    Why is the bridge set so far back from the bow giving the Captain zero visibility of the front . I’ve seen some new ships with the bridge right in front . .

    It would not surprise me when they use a combination of "submersible / re-float" badges.
    Common when they build a New Bridge, reverse the procedure to float tonnage than all the cranes on sight or available.
