Cookie cutter bridge BUILDER..... We need a unique Baltimore FSK BRIDGE..... SOMETHING THAT REFLECTS THE TEAM, CITY, AND PORT!!!

This bridge will be a very different and very impressive sight in and around south Baltimore, especially considering its size as compared to the original bridge. Its towers will be taller than any of the buildings in Baltimore (tallest skyscraper is about 530 feet), and it will likely be one of the tallest structures in the state. In fact, it will have a navigational clearance higher than that of the Golden Gate Bridge! It will totally dominate the skyline of that part of town. I have no idea as to what the governor was rambling on about the bridge "taking after Baltimore's architectural heritage"! It could not be more unlike the original bridge, and cable stayed bridges are very non-traditional looking. In fact, they remind me of what might have been imagined in the future in 1950's (60's, 70's and 80's) sci-fi movies and tv shows. In fact, I had never even heard of a cable stayed bridge until recently. I saw one in person (I also drove across it) back in 2008 when I went to Savannah, Georgia, and I thought it was the weirdest, freakiest bridge I'd ever seen. I remember saying to my mom "Whoa! Look at that bridge!" . My mom was creeped out by it, but she doesn't like going over any sort of big bridge. I just thought it was some kind of bizarre architectural statement particular to the town of Savannah. I had no idea these things were popping up all over the place (well, except around here in the mid-Atlantic). Speaking of the Savannah bridge, this new Key Bridge looks very much like it, only longer and taller. All things considered, I'm OK with this design, especially since some cable stayed bridges can be downright eyesores!

I thought any new bridge has to have dolphins either side for protection and tgis doesnt seem to have them ... NTSB rules for new bridges ?

Keep thinking that the ship can't get near it. Just look at the ship breakers ramming big ships right on on beaches.

Excellent to see the new design and I hope it is dedicated to the workers who passed away on the bridge 🙏🏼

Great report Captain Andy. You talked about the width of the new bridge. Will there be bicycle lanes? In California this is now a requirement for all bridges highway streets that’s sort of thing .

Good report. FYI, mv Dali left drydock after repair in Luoyuan Bay, then loaded at several China and South Korea ports. Now enroute to Balboa (Panama). No change of name etc.

We have one in the UK, similar design, though the spans are not as will be in Baltimore, ours is called the Severn Crossing, the one they are propsing will be more esthetically pleasing. The build will be really exciting for you all. Stay Safe skipper

Did you see what the final total was for the cleanup of the 3 spans of the old bridge? It was over $100 million!

Thanks for the update. Increasing the shoulder width will help with breakdown and the anxiety of some drivers. I hate narrow lane/shoulder bridges.

Thanks for the update, Captain. We have a cable stayed bridge near here. Toledo Ohio. Veterans Memorial Skyway I believe it is called. Just one tower in the river. It is covered with LED lighting that can display images. Just beautiful at night.

They should still put bumpers slightly to each side of the main towers.

Cable stayed bridges are not new, but they are (in my opinion) the best design. Here in Canada we have several of these large bridges and they have all proven to be excellent.

It's a great design...They apparently have learned a few things from the mishap... Please keep following this story, Captain Andy...doing so is a fitting honor for the 8 heroes - and our fellow MN mates - whose presence on the bridge saved lives...your efforts to follow this story ALSO honor the ultimate sacrifice that 6 of those heroes gave that night... When will the plans for a new bridge be announced or have they already?

Captain Andy, you sure got me thinking... Since I retired and my health has deteriorated I expect I am worth very little as evaluated by economics. Some how we are missing some intangible characteristics of human life that are of great value. We cannot expect the "government" (We the People) to fully pay for that, but God Knows we need to recognize that this value. May God Help this society.
