    Best NES one hit wonder for me. Princess Tomato and the Salad Kingdom.
    Freaking loved this game so much as a kid that I told my parents I lost the rental so I could keep it from our local video rental store.

    guardian Legend. It was a really expensive game I got when I had chicken pox. I played it for days. The mix of game styles were amazing. The level ups, music, game play, all made this game amazing.

    When I was a kid I picked up Crystalis because it was super cheap. I didn't know anything about it but it was all I could afford! I ended up falling in love with that game and it became one of my all-time favorites. I replayed it again about 5-6 years ago and enjoyed it just as much as I had the first time.

    I live in the Philippines and I remember way back that the title for this game in the old Famicom Cartridge is Robocop 3. I played it thinking it was Robocop but the character looks like Shaider. Anyway, I just realized that in America, this games was released as Shatterhand.

    Damn. Now I gotta go play Shatterhand again. Great video, my Newfie friend!

  • @ezkiel0
    @ezkiel0 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Shatterhand was actually the western version of a game called Directive Solbrain (Tokkyū Shirei Soruburein), with a few deliberate changes: a few bosses, the familiar/drones and the timed superweapon (it was changed to an armor in shatterhand).
    So maybe that expalins why the game didn't had sequels, as it was based in a japanese tv show

    A few people mentioned The Guardian Legend, which is one of my top picks in this category. I’ll also mention XEXYZ, which was a Bi Way bin gem I picked up late in the NES lifetime. It was similar to TGL in that it was a hybrid action-adventure/shoot 'em up.

    "Shatterhand," though I've never played it, reminds me of another one-hit wonder from Capcom, "Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight." I had that game as a kid and it was hard as balls!

    Keep up with the great ideas Mike. The last couple of videos you've had has made for some great discussion.
    Bucky O'Hare - I have a lot of fondness for this title because it is difficult. I think mixing a difficult game with unlimited continues is a great combination to keep people playing the title. I haven't played the game in such a long time but what I did play I really enjoyed. The cartoon series was very short lived with only 13 episodes, but my wife who is incredibly knowledgeable about the series considers it to be one of the most fleshed out cartoon series during the time it was released. I think Konami and Capcom would be the shining examples of taking any licensed property and making good games out of them which really showed how much they cared about their work. Konami actually put out a really excellent arcade style beat'em up for bucky o'hare but unfortunately its a little on the obscure side when arcade games such as x-men, teenage mutant ninja turtles, and the simpsons would be the shining examples of arcade style beat'em ups.
    Crystalis - This is a game i have not played before but I remember it being shown quite extensively on several issues of Nintendo Power back in the day. I know I will definitely get my enjoyment out of this game, but I just need some free time to do it.
    Shatterhand - Another nes game that I never played before. I know I'll get my enjoyment out of it when I do play it.

    • @MichaelBtheGameGenie
      @MichaelBtheGameGenie  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Derrick! Bucky is good difficulty, super hard but its on you and totally beatable. You will have fun with both Crystalis and Shatterhand when you get to them. Apparently Shatterhand is based on a Anime in Japan I think

    One game I'd like to see in a possible sequel to this video would have to be The Magic Of Schererzade. It was an RPG/action hybrid with an Arabian twist. It had really good graphics and an amazing musical soundtrack, and I played it a ton back in the day. Heck, I still play it a couple times a year. To this day it's one of my all time faves, and I consider it a real shame that a sequel for it was never released.

    I really like your videos, they are always interesting. I had a request for a video in the future. I have always liked and collected the colored game cartridges. For example maximum carnage or Zelda. I know nes and snes only had around 5 of them. Gameboy and N64 had a bunch of the colored carts. Would you ever do a video about them. Maybe how many there are or a review of your favorites? Just a thought I had. All your videos have been entertaining , great job.

    Mike, you should check out NES Cult Classics book by Hardcore Gaming 101 then. It's chock full of reviews of good (or even great) games for NES/Famicom you might have never heard of, lots of them never receiving any sequel for either NES or SNES.

    Great video! Keep up the good work! I hope that this one gets a sequel. BTW, although I’m a long time fan and would love to chip in and support you and your channel via Patreon, it’s hard for me to justify the current $10 per month minimum contribution. I tend to think about financial commitments from a long-term perspective and $120 per year is a considerable chunk of change. Have you ever considered introducing lower tiers that would allow fans to contribute $1 to $5 per month?

    • @MichaelBtheGameGenie
      @MichaelBtheGameGenie  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Baker hi Michael. I not sure why it would say $10 a month to support me on Patreon as I really only offer one tier for $1 a month that gives everybody anything I do on Patreon. I really appreciate you want to support me and especially being a long time fan. Just keep watching the videos and commenting and that’s cool with me.

      @MichaelDBaker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MichaelBtheGameGenie Oh, sorry for the confusion! I thought that was the minimum pledge but it’s the total amount that you get per month from patrons. I will add a contribution momentarily! Thank you for all of the years of quality content!

    Other one hit wonders:
    Little Nemo, the dream master is one of the best platformers in the system. The animal contol mechanic give it a lot of variety, and level design is not just streight, as you need to find keys scattered trough each level. Definately check it out if you have not already!
    Solstice is a unique mix of platforming, puzzles, and adventure all in cool isometric 3D graphix. It is not easy as the world is so huge you easily get lost in it, and the mechanics take a little while to get used to, but once you do, you are in for a treat.
    Battle of olympos is great action adventure set in the ancient greece. It is sidescrolling adventure in the same style as Zelda 2. I would go as far as say it is the best of its kind, beating Simons quest, Faxanadu, Rygar or even Zelda 2.
    Maybe do a follow up video after you have checked these out?
    Like your videos, keep up a good work!

      Solstice has a sequel, it’s Equinox on the SNES. Also Nemo was a license of a failed film. It was never going to get a sequel.

      @@goatbone Cool if it had a sequal. But why did they name it something different than Solstice?

    • @goatbone
      @goatbone 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Solstice and Equinox are related words, perhaps they thought people would realise it was the sequel. In Japan they just called it Solstice II.

    I'm waiting for duck hunt 2, jk. I really liked ice climber as a kid. It was re-released maybe 10x for different ports but I don't recall a sequel. Was one of my first games and was I think part of the earliest be a games I believe. If it was re-released so much I'm surprised it never saw a solid sequel.

      River City Ransom has TONS of sequels actually, most of them just weren't released outside of Japan, in Japan it's part of a series known as "Kunio-kun".
      River City Ransom was itself a sequel, the first Kunio-kun game was released in the west as Renegade.

      Journey To Silius was awesome. Fun fact: It was originally going to be a Terminator game, but Sunsoft lost the license. Sunsoft was the king of movie-licensed NES games.

    I suspect the Japanese market may have been the reason we never saw a Shatterhand 2. The original was a licensed game over there, based on a short-lived sentai type sci-fi action series called Super Rescue Solbrain. Natsume may have not thought a Solbrain sequel made sense after the show went off the air in 1992. Not that different from Bucky O'Hare in that respect.
