In the Peninsular War, a British sergeant is field promoted to a lieutenant in charge of a disrespectful rifle company.
Add to the list of history's worst military blunders: Farthingdale trying to pull rank on a man whose wife has just been murdered.

I like how sharpe gives the french guy some form of mutual respect as he returns the man's wife.

I mean, the guy showed for his wife personally while the Colonel couldn't be bothered. That and Sharpe just lost his wife, what kind of man would Sharpe be if he held onto the man's wife after he risked so much for her.

Yeah... but he didn’t. Had neither horse -the rocket-troop were just masquerading as lancers- or directable artillery in any real sense. (The later engagement was really the first time that lieutenant had hit anything on purpose.) So Sharpe was feeding the enemy false information. Now *that’s* soldiering.
@@michaeljames4904 In the book the rocket troop allowed themselves to be seen in artillery greatcoats to deceive the French into thinking Sharpe had artillery.

5th Edition got rid of Diplomacy, but the Matt Colville "Kingdoms & Warfare" supplement hardcover has a Domain skill called Diplomacy, that uses either Insight or Persuasion, or some combination of both -- I just got the book, and am still skimming the pages. It looks cool, everyone should pick up a copy.
One of the special units available to your characters is a "Pet Roc", and just for that pun, it's worth buying this book.

It's interesting how the French officers throughout this series are heads and away more competent than the British ones.
Well the French military at the time existed out of conscripts and professional soldiers. You didn't make officer from nothing. Meanwhile the British forces had it's officers from the English noble, most of whom bought their position by means of money. So on one side you have soldiers that prove themselfs by merit to become officers ... and on the other you have rich people who perhaps never have fought in battle ever in their life and only gained the position due to rank of birth and funds.

@@jonathannilsson8482 only after the French Revolution decapitated - in some cases literally - the officer class, who until then were also nobles. After that the NCOs and others who could actually do the job were promoted.
@@julianmhall The French officer base was mixed. Not all aristo families were ended and many bourgeoise families arose. Humble soldiers also gained great rank through service and bravery. The same is equally true in all countries. Millions of men were under arms in this period and if one battalion of a 1000 men required 4% to be officers then not all the high born families could supply them. The middle class was the main resource, the sons of clergy, doctors and lawyers. All across Europe and beyond. And some from the ranks too. Money helped but was not the whole picture.
@@michaelhaynes9181 Not all countries at all or for example the British system of purchasing commissions would not have existed. Only the rich could afford to buy a commission.. the poorer had to rely on acts of bravery such as actually surviving a Forlorn Hope to be promoted to the officer corps.

Ducos was a fantastic villain, and Féodor Atkine was exactly the right man to bring him to life.

I like Ducos as a bad guy, he compliments sharpe. Sharpe is a tactician and a brute but not really very clever, Ducos is a strategic thinker and a subtle planner.
He knew what to say to get the prisoner released. And for free no less.

Yeah tbh they weren’t consistently in the wrong, sure in the Peninsular War maybe a bit since Spain was their ally prior and it was a blatant power grab, but the start of the war and also the declaration prior to Waterloo, both were monarchies trying to gang up on France since they had overthrown the Bourbons who had mismanaged their country.

People aren't villain, persons can be. As the history is being written by the victors, the losing side is always portrayed as being the villains of the story. The British didn't fight Napoleon because he was so bad in his ambitions in wanting to rule Europe, they fought him because if they let him achieve his goals, he would be in a position to challenge the British hegemony in the world. Who's the villain here? the one that wants to rule the world, or they that already do, usually achieved through military might?

The "Sean Bean always dies" is a funny meme, but it's not accurate. His character survived in many movies. Let's say there's always a 50/50 chances he'll die in the movie.
It's just because Sean Bean used up an entire career's worth of plot armour playing the unkillable Sharpe! XD

Unfortunately the Sharpe series of TV shows are a horrible version of the fantastic books written by Bernard Cornwell. I really, really hope that Bernard got paid a ton of money for the adaptation rights to his fantastic novels because the shows turned them into shit.

@@waratahdavid696 This is unfortunately true. But the way they changed it all around was what I was talking about. I could understand cutting down the large battle scenes, but they actually had the nerve to think they wrote a better dialogue, scenes and finish than the original.
