- Previously unpublished film footage of Derbyshire's famous railway. Recorded by my grandfather Leonard Brian Cooper circa 1958. Captured on standard 8 cine film.
Apologies if you had this film bookmarked, I wasn't happy with its appearance. I've taken it down and re-uploaded this time without TH-cam's shake reduction and light correction.
thank you for this film. was at high peak junction and Cromford canal 4/8/2024. i never knew the rail line existed, but love doing research afterwards.
Very good film . A great shame there were not more men like your Grandfather .Thanks for putting it on You Tube.
Thank you for scanning and uploading this film!
It is great to see the C&HP as a working railway rather than the fan trips at the end.
Just brilliant. Cheers.
Wallow, wallow, nostalgically ... I have an isolated childhood memory of watching a train run along this railway, shortly before it closed. It seems incredible that its potential as a tourist attraction wasn't recognised, as a decade later it surely would have been, Imagine the trip, a haul up the inclines from Whatstandwell and all the way to Buxton taking in the expansive landscapes of mid-Derbyshire. I take some comfort from the preservation of the trackbed as a cycle-track, but all the same .... How short-sighted can you get!
I was thinking that before I read your comments Mr. Bradshaw
That's superb - I've worked all my career at the Health & Safety Laboratory which is sited on the C&HP and the history of the line fascinates me. So good to see it when it was in use. Thank you.
Great footage - very familiar to those who now cycle the High Peak Trail
Brilliant video 😎
I ride up there on my wolf warrior scooter 😂
I rode the route from Cromford to Beyond Parsley Hay last week. This film is brilliant, thank you. Is is such a shame that the line closed (with the loss of many livelihoods) but, I have to say, that without that loss we would not have such a fantastic resource today
Bloody hell, that was an amazing bit of film, thankyou so much for sharing your Grandfathers work
Delightful footage, thanks for posting and kudos to your Granddad - mine would never have done this! I spent many happy years cycling this route in the 80's and 90's, I really love it up there.
Totally Awsome !! .. Thank You for sharing your Granddads work ... priceless
A fascinating film. I remember seeing a steam train as it crossed the road-bridge at Longcliffe; that was in 1958 and I was aged 8. I have recently walked it; I was amazed at the tight bends, particularly that at Gotham. Thanks for uploading.
benbisley :-)
Outstanding ,, rare and precious footage,,,, what foresight your Granddad had,,, many thanks
***** Thank you Alan!!
Thank you John for your kind words. For some reason my grandfather only ever shot one reel of film (he wasn't a wealthy man and I wonder if the cost of film may have been prohibitive).
lovely film C&HP is one of my favorite places in the world
Just at 4.40 is where we went to see the last train run across Mouldridge Lane. Thank you to both you and your Grandfather for this great piece of film.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the film. Its just a shame that he didn't have a camera with sound, that would have been truly amazing!
Historic, thanks for putting it up. Amazing how good the track was for a minor mineral line.
Superb footage...cycled most of this over the years but seen very little footage of it in use...many thanks..
Hi Peter, cycled much of it myself many years ago and looking forward to doing so again with my kids! Thank you for your kind words!
O no I remember it now ,, but well worth another watch,,,, I walked the Cromford and Middleton inclines then went round and back through Wirksworth ,,, just a few months back,,,,
Great stuff, been on there a time or to.
For anyone interested in the C&HPR, there's a report of an 1880 journey along the entire route here: goyt-valley.org.uk/over-the-high-peak-railway/
What great footage of a unique railway. Thanks for sharing......
@5'-38s there is a view back from the Brake van down the track. There appears to be a short length of 'checkrail' on the right hand rail only, what would be the purpose of it?
Ive looked at youtube channel great stuff, Me and my wife live a 50s lifestyle apart from this hidden pc. You may have seen us in Wirksworth driving a 59 Hillman Minx, or dressed in 50s clothes.
Not a Hillman now its a Striking Blue American T bird, if you see us say hi.
Still using 1800s technology in the 50s, When men were men
Is it possible to buy a copy?
What incredible footage...though I suspect Greta Thunberg would have something to say about all the smoke....
Nuts to her😮
