I’m pretty sure this is actually a misconception with maglev cubes. It makes sense that theres less friction in the core because of the maglev removing it, but it shouldnt really be noticable since the radius at which the friction from springs would be is only a millimeter or 2.
Im think the main reason maglev cubes are faster is actually because of the rate the magnet force increases being inverse square instead of linear. If people adjust the maglev/spring compression to be similar, they might make it so the force is the same when the magnets/springs are more compressed. Since magnet force increases faster, that will mean there is less force than springs at the least compressed state, and therefore less friction on the pieces.

This is true. However, I have noticed a very small amount of friction with springs rubbing against the cube which maglev eliminates. The biggest difference for me is the noise. Maglev cubes are often much quieter than the spring alternative.

personally I think my YS3M ball core out the box is better than my Tornado v3 Flagship and Moyu WRM Maglev 2021 and RS3M super.magnetic 2022. Would be good if Jperm has time later to show us if or how JPerm setup his YS3M.

Lol, you just named (almost) the exact 4 3x3s I own (except I only have the spring version of WRM).
But yeah, TV3 is great, and the Super RS3m is decent, too. But the ys3m ball-core was the first I got, has always been my main/fave. All 3 are pretty great, but IMO ys3m is the best (tornado is faster and smoother, but also feels super-delicate, like you could shatter the brittle, plastic core, by dropping it wrong, one time; Corner-cutting is not great, too. But the Ys3m is a workhorse; sturdy, reliable, and works right, every time)
I used the damn thing so much, unlubed, when I first got it last year, that I wore off half the "dragonscale" pattern, and have been thinking of getting a new one, now I know how to maintain a puzzle better
